Some are good, and some are not. The key is always to do your own research. Make sure you understand the project and don't invest out of hype.

Of course ICOs as a concept work, it is just a new way of crowd funding, giving the opportunity to the mass public to get in at ground floor level on projects. The problem lies with the feasibility of projects themselves, and of course scam projects designed to take the money and run. As mentioned above, do your due diligence and invest wisely. You wouldn't give your money to someone in the street just because they said you could get a great return on it, you would want to see evidence. Why would you do anything different when investing in ICOs? It is a without doubt a high risk form of investing, but the potential returns could be huge. You will not pick winners every time (in fact, most will probably be losers), but as long as you are doing extensive research every time, sooner or later you should be able to find a winner that will give you a great return.

It works and it definitely help fund good projects. Ethereum started as an ICO and look where it is now. But there are also many who fails due to regulations, team issues or just outright scams. Icos are around 50% scams, so you need to pick very carefully , better to participate in icos where smart contrat is public.

ICOs by essence are a powerfull tool for funding and help developing new technology and new applications, but until regulations and safeguards are in place it is dangerous business...

ICO is good to make an investment but still risky because some ICO fails to maintain or to make successful when it hits in the market, price goes down and down and investors can't recover the lose.
