Congrats philipma!!! :)

I smoke a lot, like really a lot... Where I live cigarettes cost less than 2usd per pack, you can smoke almost everywhere even at restaurant, it is difficult to forget the existence of tobacco.
I am dreaming of stopping this shit to be honnest, but so far I never succeed for more than a month :(   I feel guilty to continue, but at the same time I know no one could stand me if I stop, I become over nervous after 3-4 hours without a cigarette.

Happy 29th February to you man, you're strong!

I have never smoked all my life and I do not think I will do that any time sooner. Health otherwise, it is not advisable to do as there are lots of consequences attached when one smokes and get to the point of smoking uncontrollable.
I have friends that smokes, and I have never done such in my life before and I am happy and healthy. I have been able to stay healthy and maintain a good life style.

Smoking now considered the top enemy against our health and that is the reason there is a big war against smoking for years now. The thing is that smoking is bad and even majority of smokers know this fact...so they tried so many ways and means to quit the bad habit only to return after some time. Sadly this is a very addictive habit and one that can surely define one's health for the rest of his life...and another sad thing is that smoking can also be affecting people around the smoker, not to mention its contribution to air pollution, of course. So congratulations to people who made it...kicked the habit for good and for those who failed there is no harm in trying again and again so never give up. Your life is worth more...much, much more compared to smoking.

Personally, my experience with smoking was just a phase in my life, it was like last 2016, and never smoked again. I think when you have improved, that's what matters and understand why you shouldn't do it anymore.

Congratulations OP! Don't have Feb 29 anniversary yet to celebrate lol

You the man @philipma1957. You have finally overcome the addiction of smoking cigs. I was smoking cigs before, but Iwas able to say No to smoking, after a lot of attempts of quitting, and finally I was able to. It is always difficult to stop what you are addicted to, but only with self determination before it can be achieved. Those my smoking days were fun to me, as a teenager that started smoking early.

It is better late than never, a very Big Congratulations!!!

Voted quit for under a month. I have stayed a month without smoking and that’s because I met someone who at that time I was so in love with her and she asked me to quit smoking to have a chance so I did. Stayed a month without smoking but when she told me that she was betrothed to someone I couldn’t bear the shock so I resorted to smoking as a coping mechanism and still date I smoke.

I would appreciate it if you edit this post and include how you managed to quit because I have tried to quit but it is so difficult. Each time I quit I easily get triggered to smoke especially when I am lonely and pissed off. I am not happy smoking but how do I stop has been a very hard nut to crack.

Actually, I do not smoke, but I have helped others stop smoking using my ways. So all I had to do was provide them help with a plan to stop smoking and always be there to support them while they are working on it, as well as help them by finding what will distract them from smoking like exercise, job opportunities because some people who are smoking is not actually their mind to smoke, but because of frustration in life and the high cost of things, they go into smoking just to clear their heads from thinking and from there, they become addicted and it makes them not to eat properly too, so I will also provide foods stuff for them if I have or encourage them to eat healthy

Congratulations Philipma for quitting smoking for about 28 years without falling back into it. Not everybody can do it by sticking to the rule of staying away from tobacco smoking when they are young.

Smoking is a habit that I am sure that I wouldn't in any way think of doing because I wasn't brought up that way and it wasn't part of my lifestyle I will long to have for myself now and in the future.

Actually we all know about smoking but still we are addicted to it. However, I have seen many people who have returned to a normal life after a long period of smoking. They have been able to lead a smoke free life. I personally don't smoke. I can't stand the smell of smoke. If someone tries to smoke in front of me I advise him to avoid it as much as possible. But I know the people who are addicted here will not obeyed my suggestion. Because breaking this habit is not an easy task. Here, if a smoker does not take such a decision on his own, then he can never be recovers.

yeah never start never get addicted will save time and money for you.

I began at 13 and stopped at 39

So I smoked for 26 years about 9500 days around 1 1/2 packs a day a total of 14250 packs and maybe 285,000 cigarettes scary when you add it up.

Do not get started is my best advice.

An amazing story. I have friends who started smoking 10 years ago, and every year they say it is the last year, but they continue. What is the thing that pushed you to change? I think it will be a strong motivation to make you change.

Off-topic, I would like to know your outlook on life before and after 1990 in terms of quality of life, average wages, costs of living, etc., compared to the opportunities available now and quality of life.

Thus, I'm wondering how you've able to stay so devoted to not smoking despite having friends that do. Did you ever consider giving in and trying it, or were you always strongly opposed to it? It takes a lot of self-control and effort to say no to something that everyone else is doing. Making health-conscious decisions is a key element of living a happy and meaningful life. And I completely agree with you regarding the harmful impacts of smoking, which may have a serious impact on your health and is not something anyone should do.

I always have that health consciousness in me that  smoking is  not healthy for a good living lifestyle and I always let my friends know that so most times whenever we are together, they do not smoke and if they feel like doing that, they keep distance away and return after they had finished smoking. They do not do that in my presence.

I am strongly opposed to smoking because of the health  consequences. I can not sit and watch my loved ones destroy themselves in my very presence all in the name of smoking uncontrollably and tagging it to be for fun and self relief. It is absurd and makes no sense to me. I consider their lives to be of importance and precious to me that is why I always make sure I talk to any one I love  to try stop smoking whenever I do see them doing such.

Thus, I'm wondering how you've able to stay so devoted to not smoking despite having friends that do. Did you ever consider giving in and trying it, or were you always strongly opposed to it? You can only quit smoking when you are determined to it and it is only achieved at when you are ready to fight it out. That is if you are an addicted smoker who feels you can't survive without smoking.
However, aside 29 February, one can always stop smoking as remarkably, the day you stops should be marked remarkable as your quitting anniversary.

I am not a smoker because I am already aware that people who smokes are struggling to get out of it due to how they spends their fund just to smoke some kind of shits that does not give them good in returns instead they intakes it and still goes about taking preventing measures so that they don't negatively get affected by it to their body system. Meanwhile such as sum of money that can be utilized in other ways of life and counts profits out of it.

Is it really possible to quit smoking completely? I am not a smoker, so I cant answer the question, but my wife is a smoker. She has been smoking for around 5-7 years (that is what I have observed), then she has quit (as I though it will be forever) for years (the baby thing, preparation, giving birth and etc), but she has returned to smoking e-cigarettes later. I am sure that she has returned due to influence of a company/people around (returned to office work, and collegaues influenced on a return). Hasnt been a smoker for 3 years. That is why I am curious if it is possible to quit it completely.

You are lucky if you are not someone who likes smoking because smoking has a very high addictive nature because by smoking the momentary mindset will work well, but you must pay attention that excessive smoking has a bad impact on the body's condition and is very dangerous.

Am not a smoker but I know too well that quiting smoking is a process because to a smoker it's like asking him to stop breathing which is impossible, but hey trust be you can quit smoking for good if you're determine to stop it, I know for sure that it's gonna be hard at first but believe me, you can do it. Try going two days without smoking, to the whole week without smoking, and after that try going a week, to weeks from weeks to months. there's no habit that needs to be stopped that can't we stopped, most of these guys who later turned chronic smokers today is because they don't have the determination and the right persons to tell them about the dangers of smoking, but even without a mentor you can still get out of that habit.

Do not get started is my best advice.
I tried it when I was studying in High School (if I remember correctly, I was in 2nd year or even 1st year in High School when I first tried it) out of curiosity.
I continued to do it for I think a month before my family saw me, and they're angry at me when they saw me smoking. After that, I didn't smoke any cigarette anymore until now.

It's more than a decade sine I first tried it and TBH, I don't see any benefits of smoking whether it would be cigarette or the more popular one right now which is vape. I see more negatives on trying both of them than positives. If there's some positives that cigarette can give to a person, maybe they can share it here. :) Quitting in smoking is kind of hard especially when it becomes your hobby already. It's like the same with quitting in gambling, but I believe that if the person is willing to change, he can quit if he wants to. Just quit smoking for those who are still smoking out there. :P Smoking will not give you any benefits, and just calculate the money you spend on it, and think if that money is being used to invest. It would be worth more right now.

The longest I stayed away from smoking was about six months. Now I am also trying to quit smoking for 5 months now. I use special patches from Canadian Pharmacy (https://www.canpharm.com/) and it works pretty well for me. I'm thinking of starting to do sports, maybe that will help me even more.

I quit smoking ten years ago and I never looked back since then, I had to stop smoking because of pneumonia that I barely survived from then on I never tasted smoking.

My breathing condition vastly improved on my second week of not smoking which saves me a lot of money from medication and I do not easily get fatigued.

When you're getting old it is important to be more disciplined and have the right addition about health, and stopping smoking is the best decision I made.

I tried to quit smoking more than 5 times now. And the last time I was only last year, December 2023.

The first time I tried smoking was when I was in college and tried to stop when I finished studying. This is to avoid any additional expenses as I was only about to start my job. I make myself more focused on work and chewing gums or candy to avoid being tempted to smoke.

After a few months, I couldn't take it and came back to smoking. This cycle has been repeatedly happening up to last year. But my goal this year is to completely stop. Since January I don't smoke and hopefully, I can manage to do this until the following months and years.

So great to hear this, i have heard people say they have tried all they can to stop smoking, but failed as the addiction is so strong, so to hear that you quit a long time ago and never went back is great. Congratulations to you. However, i have never smoked before, and i don't think i ever will, though i have friends who smoke, but they never tried to win me over to that side.

Even though I have never experienced smoking in my whole life, I know many people who have become addicted to smoking, and in the end, they also end up harming themselves because they have lung disease. Until they die of this addiction to smoking.

So having an addiction at any time does not give good results if we do not change it, whether it is physical or not. So if that's what Op did, I congratulate him if that's the case.

Great to hear that mate,

As for my experience, been "serious" smoking since 1999 and then quit 2021 November. So it's been more than 3 years now that I completely stop, just cold turkey. Wake up in the morning with my black coffee, but i just said to myself, I don't want to smoke anymore and so I start that day and never look back.

Yes, it's true, lots of benefits specially the money that you can save in a week as I'm a heavy smoker back then. 1 pack of Marlboro lights is not enough for me in a day. Just in the morning alone, having my black coffee, I can burn 3 cigarettes in one sitting.

And then when I go to land base casinos, I will continue to smoke in my gambling. And with that, I will tell everyone that if I did it abruptly, then others too.

I quit smoking in March of 2021. I was put in the hospital with fluid around my heart and couldn't breathe, basically drowning. I went 2 weeks dealing with it before I finally said take me to the hospital. I was in heart failure and almost died. Got admitted and spent a week in the hospital getting fluid drained from around my heart and taking tests etc.

When I was released a week later, my wife emptied the house of all salts, threw away any smokes, and changed our diet plan. I got surgery on abad valve in october 2021 and an aortic aneurysm. Haven't had a cig since March of 2021.

From the experience of several friends and I know all the processes from the beginning,
If you have been able to stop smoking in a few weeks, months or even years, do not dare to smoking again because this will actually damage your lungs even more.
And it is recommended to stop smoking at the maximum age of 40 because the lungs can still regenerate lost or damaged cells even though it is only below 60%.

I have been an active smoker since 1999 until now and I hope I can quit soon, maybe this year, it may be too late but it is better than not stopping at all.

Started at my teen age. Been a chain smoker at my 20s. Then suddenly quit, when i found out that my youngest daughter has a weak pulmonary system. And yes before her, I'm trying and keep on trying to quit. Then just it hits me, i suddenly didn't like to smoke anymore. And some occasion, i tried to light one, but its not amusing or appetizing anymore, its just plain sour and undesirable.

Yeah, I saw your story in the other thread. Good for me, I didn't go to that point, although I'm diabetic and we all know that if had one, sooner or later it will have a effect on our lungs.

So again, just like that, I quit smoking, but wife is a smoker too, and so I will see her cigarettes and ashtrays lying around. But I'm not tempted in any way to go back and up to this day, after I quit, never go back and will not.

So again, just like that, I quit smoking, but wife is a smoker too, and so I will see her cigarettes and ashtrays lying around. But I'm not tempted in any way to go back and up to this day, after I quit, never go back and will not.

That is hard! But i don't know you guys and your story but. I worry about your the second hand smoking, that probably also affect you even though you quit already. And the same time your diabetic, which is i am too and i know our immune system is already weak. So hope the wife also quits.

My wife has never been a smoker, thank god. I wouldn't have stuck with her if so, it's weird because i was a smoker but cannot stand the taste of a smoker.

Smoked from 13 to 39 . I am so happy I quit It is now 28 years without a smoke.

Well done, the recovery of normal cells in your lungs must be more than 40 or even above 50%.
And here I am still smoking while posting this lol - this year will be the last, I swear ...

Thank God you are heal and hearty now and much in good health, at least never in this life would you experience a ugly feeling that cigarettes does in people's life.

We thank God for life when you shared your health challenging moment on btt forum years back, and I pretty much happy that you are very sound in health, and have put a big stop to cigarettes since 2021
