Bitcoin ETF ads on Google search engine
« on: January 28, 2024, 08:02:07 AM »
Some news and tweets on platform X about Google to allow bitcoin ETF ads on Google search engine. One of the ways people were scammed through phishing scam in 2023 is through Google ads.

I am thinking that for bitcoin ETF, Google will only allow the ads from a trusted companies like BlackRock and Grayscale and other 9 companies that SEC approved their ETFs already.

But Google search results are where scammers are many with fake ads, is this a step forward for scammers to begin using fake Google ETF ads to look firy who to scam?

Regardless, it is good to avoid those Google ads generally.

People should be avoiding doing anything with any crypto-related ads in Google since no matter how strict is Google scams and frauds still find their ways into its ads platform. I recently saw an ad in Youtube featuring an AI made video of Vitalik Buterin endorsing a certain site which is clearly a scam. I am really wondering how come Google is not able to weed out and stop these scammers from advertising in its network...is it just for money to the detriment of possible victims?  As to ads on ETF, I think that Google should make sure that they are dealing with legit advertisers and I think this is just a very easy thing to do...they should do some KYC with possible advertisers and check the details before approving any. There should be a mechanism Google can implement so we can easily see if an ad is legit and is coming from a legitimate entity doing business.

Google in the past was very hawkish with Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. Youtube even banned accounts if those channels were used to talk, advertise cryptocurrencies.

Now, with approved Bitcoin Spot ETFs in the USA., Google have to accept a fact that Bitcoin becomes a bigger part of traditional financial market. Companies from Wall Street started to build products for Bitcoin, spent capital into Bitcoin and Google know that they will earn money from those Wall Street activities too.

So by allowing advertisement of Bitcoin Spot ETFs and even more than those products, Google opens their gate to increase income for their business.

Google filter for scams allows a lot of scam attempts to get through. This means you should always be cautious that what you are reading is a scam and scammers are always looking out for what next strategy to use, ETFs included.

Why this might be a bit different is that regular individuals do not need ETFs to get access to Bitcoin, and those institutions that need it do not rely on google ads.

I am really wondering how come Google is not able to weed out and stop these scammers from advertising in its network...is it just for money to the detriment of possible victims?

The top biggest companies alone that made 30% of Youtube budget have promoted 25k brands with an average of 100k ads, that's different ads, unique ads that have been served on youtube, count the other low budget offer and you have millions. How do you think they would be able to manually check them?
They just check the url for malware or phishing with the scoring tool and for specific keywords that would trigger a human verification, avoid those and the ad runs in 5 seconds after payment. By the time reports start piling up they have depleted their budget, the campaign is done, people have already been scammed and of course scammers move to the next one.

Google in the past was very hawkish with Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. Youtube even banned accounts if those channels were used to talk, advertise cryptocurrencies.

Youtube and google banned ads for initial crypto offering and crypto exchanges not if you were to discuss Bitcoin, there are thousands of youtube videos discussing bitcoin that have been around for a decade and nobody deleted them.
As for ICOs, remember how Theymos banned ICO ads years ago?  ;D

When many cryptocurrency advertisements circulating are fake links and aim to hack wallets for new traders who still don't understand how to secure assets, it will become an important problem, and it is possible that big companies like Google will be questioned about how secure the advertisements they provide are. But I am sure cryptocurrency advertising has become very useful to facilitate the dissemination of information about cryptocurrency.

users just have to be aware of the scams. if it ask money or coins to be deposits to an offer that is too good to be true. then there's a possibility that the offer is a scam.
its still cool to see google allow ads from crypto once again. they banned this back in 2018 that causes the bear market which price of BTC was dragged down to $3800.

what is surprising though is that google is allowing crypto casino being advertised in their platform. i just saw Stake with Adesanya on the image. gamblign related ads are not welcome in their platform afaik.

Hmm, Op there's no restricted policy on the a-sense for publishing ads, which can be one of the reasons, As Faar I know there was a spam campaign related to Binance that scammed many of the people in my locality, and in action, the whole community reported some of the suspicious ads and after that incident, I don't remember any such add camping to scam people likely.

I'm quite curious how they are trapping people by the ETF ads, OP can you mention any sample here, it can be a great help for the community to recognize such ad campaign patterns. Also if you find any such ads, copy their address and report as they provide this support forms for such adds.
