Title: How do I keep my cryptocurrency safe?
Post by: taera249 on January 07, 2018, 11:03:01 PM
How do I keep my cryptocurrency safe?

The safest way to store your airdrops are hardware & cold storage wallets. These wallets store your coins offline, and therefore protect them from being hacked. There are a number of hardware wallets available. We would advise to use the Ledger Wallet Nano S or Trezor.

Not all cryptocurrency can be stored in hardware wallets. We advise you to store your crypto in wallets where you control your private keys. You don't want your free crypto to be stolen!

To avoid scams we have a few general rules:

    Never give your private keys!
Use 2 Factor Authenticator on your wallets
Be careful downloading wallets of smaller projects
Never click on links redirecting to wallets
Don’t use your main email address to apply for airdrops
Don’t re-use your passwords when you register on a website
Don’t send small amounts of crypto to receive your airdrop

I want add one thing.

Don't leave any cpyptos in an exchange.
There is a real danger that cryptos can be stolen by an hacker when exchange is attacked.

But what if i want to use them for lets say sell high to buy lower again.
Would you recommend moving between wallets then?
But isn't it a waste to do this for the transaction costs?

I would always recommend to move your crypto from the exchange to your wallet .

Yes, It's very practical as you said to leave cryptos on exchange but you have to consider that:

1)If you leave your cryptos in exchange , they can be stolen by someone else so, if someone steals them, you won't get them back again.

2)I think it's necessary spend that little commission for security reason . Remember that in the moment that your cryptos return back to your wallet, then, your funds are safe and protected.

3)The exchange can close in a future and you will lose all your crypto that you leave there.

For the question of moving funds between wallet:
This is a necessary action when you use an Exchange that asks to you the private key of the wallet  in which you have funds to sell (Etherdelta for example).

Really good suggestions.
Many still do not have hardware wallets, So metamask is also good for both storing tokens and trading.

I think some of the best advise I've read is don't login to your wallet ever unless you're making a withdrawal. You don't need to login for a deposit either. Just use EtherScan or something to see your funds. You'll find you'll login 100x less and therefore any risk is reduced by 99%, regardless of how you access your wallet.

You can keep your cryptocurrency safe, you must have a paper wallet like my MyEtherWallet. Paper wallets are for those who wish to have their own private wallets without forking out cash for hardware wallets. The money saved could be invested in their coins. Simply generate your wallet online at myetherwallet.com and note your private keys. The website does not store or transmit any of your private information.

After the recent MyEtherWallet attack I'd like to recommend anybody to buy a hardware wallet, using some of your gains to be sure to not lost on even more gains is very important, especially if you're dealing with a considerable amount of money.

I used to login into MEW to then click on the etherscan link, however you don't have to and you should avoid (I know it seems to be a noob thing to do but hey, this is for begineers), as it would have been deadly for me in case I would've done so on the day of the vulnerability.

You should preferably use Metamask and in case you plan on using MEW you should use the JSON login over the private key one in order to keep yourself safe from keyloggers. 2FA is a must anywhere you can

Thanks for wonderful advice. It is helpful to remember in the long run in crypto life. The wonder on that is how the ability of hackers to not counterfeit our wallet if they are so called intelligent person. How we can maintain the safetiness  of our wallet if sometimes there is unexpected things to come.

Great help to us who doesn't have an idea of safe storage. As you said offline wallet is more safe from hackers. Then the private key should store in safe storage too to make it safer not from hackers alone but also to those people who have bad motives on the wallet.

Never share your private key to anyone nor send it through any messaging apps. You never knew there might be hacking schemes going on. So just keep in  a hard drive, flash drive or in your desktop. Don’t just keep it in one place. Make sure to have backup in case the other one broke.

Well, you just have to jeep your private key safe, avoid scama and phishing site, protect your wallet and be sure that your wallet is secure. There are many problems  when it comes to one's crypto safety measure because it comes to your own manageable wit. However, if you try to fail in securing your account then it would be hard for you. :)

Your money, your responsibility. Any bounty/airdrop or site that asks for private key during registration is to be avoided. Also it is advisable not to click on any link given through email by projects one doesn't know. All it takes is one click and all your wallet details will be open to hacker. Let us be very careful.

In any place that you can use 2FA, always make sure you enable it, it would not take you more than a few seconds but you would be glad you did it because that account would be almost unhackable.

There have been interesting articles about hardware wallets in the german media in the last few days.

Even those wallets are not 100% secure as you can hack them physically with enough work. But at least they are easy to hide and i doubt that thiefs look for them. Still the best option imo

There have been interesting articles about hardware wallets in the german media in the last few days.

Even those wallets are not 100% secure as you can hack them physically with enough work. But at least they are easy to hide and i doubt that thiefs look for them. Still the best option imo

I agree. I also trust only hard wallets for long-term storing

As much as possible, keep your keys offline. Have multiple offline storage devices to keep your private keys and make a vault wherein you could keep safe of these words and passphrases. Aside from that, because paper wallet could be crumpled, destroyed or burned, get a metal keyword holder. A metal device that holds letters and words so that you would be able to retrieve even the time passes by.

I guess, saving private keys on a computer is not a good idea? Better if they are written in paper to avoid hacking?

I think the preference of the majority of hardware wallet (https://cryptolinks.com/hardware-wallet), and the obvious name that comes to mind is Ledger, but obviously many prefer Trezor too including me!

You just need to be sensible with using of right option that comforts you but it’s important to use something like that for security, especially IF you have large amount of Cryptos with you. As you just can’t be comfortable otherwise with keeping up such a large amount with yourself.

How do I keep my cryptocurrency safe?
We would advise to use the Ledger Wallet Nano S or Trezor.

Hey :) Thanks for the advices. I bought a ledger nano s, because I have many different cryptocurrencies and wanted to hold them safely. I installed it and everything went fine. But when I started to save my currencies on it, it said, that I have to remove currencies, because I cant hold more than 5. What did I do wrong? I think I missed something. I bought it because eveywhere were told, that this is the wallet you need to have, when you have many different currencies. So I dont think, that this is right. I would be very glad about help here...

Don't leave any cpyptos in an exchange.
There is a real danger that cryptos can be stolen by an hacker when exchange is attacked.

Well, first of all, never leave your coins on exchanges, they can be hacked.
Always store your coins in the wallets for which you hold the private keys. Never store your private keys on computer which is connected to the network lastly, do not keep all your coins in a single wallet.

It is also important to keep private keys and recovery seed in a safe manner. Don't keep this data on a device, better use paper and keep it in a vault or something

In order to have a crypto wallet, you need to choose from a variety of wallets (hardware, software, paper) and all of them have their own purpose.
When safety is the first priority, hardware wallets are the best option. They're foolproof and are virtually unhackable. This is so because of the various features that are available in these wallets.
 1. These wallets won’t work until and unless they’re connected to a computer. When disconnected they are just a piece of metal.
 2. The private key is safe inside the device itself and when not connected to the PC, it remains isolated. Whereas the exchanges (who are a third party software) stores your private key on an online server.
 3. Also, as these hardware wallets are external devices, if your computer gets infected with a virus, then at least your wallet and private key will remain safe.
 4. The hardware wallets possess the Two-Factor Authentication, making the transaction more secure, unlike the exchanges.
The best hardware wallets are Ledger Nano S and Trezor One.

And try not to store your crypto on an exchange as that would probably be the most unsafe option. The reason lies behind the fact that these exchanges store your private key on an online server. Plus, you must be aware of all the hacks that keep on happening.

The main thing here is to deal with reliable cryptocurrency and the wallet which is safe and secure. For me, the anonymity which is provided by decentralized platforms is also in the first place. Therefore, I use the Tera wallet (if you do not know yet about the project, everything is here https://terafoundation.org - all the information is briefly explained). I use it also for the reason that I have to be on the move all the time, and most crypto operations are done with the help of my Android. I use Samsung but it does not matter as the wallet works on other smartphones as well.  ;D

It is. As I see, the price of Tera Coin has started growing finally. CoinMarketCap (Tera is listed there) shows that it managed to add over 5% since the beginning of October. At the moment, not all exchanges are shown on this resource. Thus, it is also proof of the reliability of the project. A complete list of sites where the coin is traded is available on the official website.

One of the things a newbie should learn is how to keep their riches for safekeeping and this thread, for me, was full of information already. Anyway, in crypto, everything is done by research. If you're lazy enough to do a little research on something then cryptocurrency is not for you. If you can't guard your money or your wallet then investing is not for you. There is so much to learn if you really are into this kind of investment.

Don’t send small amounts of crypto to receive your airdrop

Most of your advice was a nice and good mate, thanks for this thing. Actually, activating your 2FA is strong enough
so that your account won't able to hack by many. This was already proven and tested to me. Also at the email, I used too I activated my 2FA too.

There are two sides to safe coin storage. Security from the technical side (so as not to be stolen) and security from the price side (not to lose money due to volatility). In the first case, cold wallets and physical media will help. In the second - a method of investing that guarantees the safety of money, for example, a structured deposit

Any time anything can happen if the asset is stolen or hacked by some one then it can not be regain. An this regard the most important thing for me the security of my wallet. I suggest every one to take some initiatives to protect your wallet from the scammer. Just keep your email password secure and not share any one. Do not keep your assets in exchange wallet address. Your private key your assets if you lost it then everything will loss.  Never give your private keys!
Use 2 Factor Authenticator on your wallets. Never click on links redirecting to wallets. Don’t re-use your passwords when you register on a website. Don’t send small amounts of crypto to receive your airdrop. Actually these issues are very important to know how to save your crypto currency.

To avoid scams we have a few general rules:

    Never give your private keys!
Use 2 Factor Authenticator on your wallets
Be careful downloading wallets of smaller projects
Never click on links redirecting to wallets
Don’t use your main email address to apply for airdrops
Don’t re-use your passwords when you register on a website
Don’t send small amounts of crypto to receive your airdrop
Very good points! Private keys are very important and that is why we should keep them safe so that our funds can be safe as well. Also, we should activate 2FA security feature so that it can increase the protection for our funds in wallets that we use, and if anyone can afford hardware wallets that would better because are more secure.

Great help to us who doesn't have an idea of safe storage. As you said offline wallet is more safe from hackers. Then the private key should store in safe storage too to make it safer not from hackers alone but also to those people who have bad motives on the wallet

Thanks for your information. I will keep in mind the rules which you have provided. These rules are the basic things if you want that your wallet not to be hacked by someone then follow the rules of the forum.

Great tips when I was newbie some hackers stole all my tokens because I used a easy password.. now best solution for me is to use ledger nano s for everything. You can keep your cryptocurrency safely by using 2fa.Also never ever give your private key to anyone who's asking for it and reason out that it is needed for them to send you tokens, only wallet address is needed ok.Don't forget to log out your account when using other PC.And  maybe try to change your password regularly.

wonder on that is how the ability of hackers to not counterfeit our wallet if they are so called intelligent person. How we can maintain the safetiness  of our wallet never knew there might be hacking schemes going on. So just keep in  a hard drive, flash drive or in your desktop. Don’t just keep it in one place. Make sure to have backup in case

Back in 2018/19 crypto exchanges where not so safe and attacked by many hackers occasionally. But now its different. Many cloud wallet security protocols improves alot and now its nearly impossible to hack many exchanges. I personally use exchanges to secure normal coins but store personally large amount.

I believe that no cryptocurrency user can feel safe, because there is always a rose in hacking or losing sensitive data from their wallets.  It seems to me that this problem looks even more global if we talk about the legalization of cryptocurrency and the use of cryptocurrency in everyday life.  The fact is that using cryptocurrency and having so many dangers of losing money, using cryptocurrency for an ordinary person really carries a lot of risks and dangers.

Yes, I agree with you. Really cryptocurrency market is a field of high volatility and risk. Besides that there are a lot of sheetcoins and scam projects. And there are a lot if scammers. Of course we know the rules to keep our assets safety. But anyway crypto is too risky.

Talking less about money (or crypto) always work well when speaking about safety. The less people know about you, the better it is. I use separate wallets for storage, and separate wallets for transactions. So far so good.
