sha-256 and scrypt with asics are just about the only good things to mine
And no one will launch a new sha-256 coin because it will be seen as a bitcoin clone with no hype and no price future while Scrypt relies on doge popularity and if that goes down so does mining as litecoin is already losing support slowly but surely.
In my opinion, mining with GPUs will return more than before this year if you manage to have energy at an acceptable price it can still be profitable and then let's not forget that the cards are now also used for AI so their value will grow over time
GPU mining can't return unless you have a coin that generates the same reward as ETH did, you can have the cheapest energy and cheapest board, if the reward from using those is 2 cents a day, it's useless.
A Nvidia 4070 ti is making barely 30 cents before electricity, to ROI in a year it would need to be under $120...
