I have been using MEW (myetherwallet) from last 2 years. I think MEW is the best for ETH becuase it is the main wallet of Ethereum. For better safety you can use keystore file rather than private key. I also use blockchain for only hold of ETH but MEW is for Ethereum and ERC20 tokens.

I agree to this, if you cannot afford to buy a hardware wallet. The best choice you got is myetherwallet or MEW, it is decentralised so there is no database that saves your private keys just avoid to phishing websites.

I believe that you need to use only the official myetherwallet wallet, and not any other, because the official wallet will never be a scam. Never store your keys and passwords on your computer; an external hard drive is suitable for safekeeping.

I would like to suggest you trying to afford a hard wallet, because it's more security then any other online wallet and for some hard fork, they still support you to receive the token after the fork too
