  • Ether has lost 70 percent of its value this year but Wall Street’s biggest crypto bull says it’s “about to rally strongly.”
  • Fundstrat's Tom Lee says the past four out of four times ether underperformed other cryptocurrencies by two standard deviations, it saw a"major trend reversal."
  • It was one of the best performing cryptocurrencies last year but ether struggled from a lack of confidence in its technology roadmap, increased competition, and “panic selling.”

Ether has had a tough year. But it's not too late for a comeback, according to bitcoin bull Tom Lee.

The world's second-largest digital asset is down more than 70 percent since January and can't seem to find its footing after a breakout 2017. In the past three months alone it has dropped 50 percent and largely underperformed other top cryptocurrencies, according to data from CoinDesk.

The last four out of four times it lagged its peers that badly, by two standard deviations, Lee said ether saw a "major trend reversal."

"We believe Ethereum is about to stage a trend reversal and rally strongly," Lee, managing partner and head of research at Fundstrat Global Advisors, said in a note to clients Thursday.

Ether was the star cryptocurrency last year, way outperforming its predecessor bitcoin but 2018 has been a different story. Investor patience is wearing thin — mainstream adoption isn't here yet, folks can now short the market, and blockchain competitors like EOS are gunning to be the top platform for developers.

Lee meanwhile "believes sentiment is currently overly negative on ETH." While it has underperformed its peers by two standard deviations, Lee said that's "a sign of capitulation."

Articles about Cryptocurrency / Can Bitcoin's True Value Be Zero?
« on: September 23, 2018, 07:51:12 AM »
by By Avi Gilburt, ElliottWaveTrader.net

The perspective that most have about Bitcoin ranges from complete lack of knowledge to utter certainty that it will change the world.  Moreover, there are really no true “fundamentals” with which analysts are able to even attempt to value it based upon traditional methods.  But, that certainly has not stopped everyone and their mother from providing their opinion based upon their “feelings.”

Yes, most of what you see presented on the valuation of Bitcoin is nothing more than the analysts’ “feelings.”  In fact, I read an article a few days ago which provided the perfect example of this phenomena seen in the crypto-currency market.  In a recent article, Geoffrey Caveney provided us his “feelings” about Bitcoin:

“When I say there's a "good chance" the bitcoin price will be below $1,000 by next year, I understand that "good chance" is not a precise phrase. Here is a more complete explanation of what I mean, in two paragraphs that will not fit in a headline:

If we had a guessing game, and we had to guess "What will be the lowest price range bitcoin trades at during the rest of 2018 and all of 2019?", my guess would be around "$900 to $1,000." I think it's about 50-50 whether the actual low price will be above that or below that.”

So, it seems analysis about Bitcoin has now come to the point of simply “guessing,” and attempting to package it as analysis.

However, I have to note that the most accurate statement I read in that article was not by the author, but by one of the commenters:

“Bitcoin has value because we say it does. A shiny yellow piece of rock in the ground has value because we say it does. MONEY has value because we say it does.”

The operable statement in this paragraph is ‘because we say it does’. This is why we say that market sentiment, which is clearly not rational, drives stock and market prices much more than fundamentals do.  In fact, market sentiment drives fundamentals as well, and I have outlined that causation chain in this prior article.

John Maynard Keynes recognized that emotion drives the market more than rationality or fundamentals when he famously stated that “the market can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent’.

So, when you want to understand price, you need to understand market sentiment as being preeminent over any means of valuation, and especially over “guessing.”

Ryan Wilday, (who wrote this article with me) is a man who has lived and worked in Silicon Valley for many years, and sees ‘value’ in cryptocurrency. But he doesn’t bet on or “guess” its ‘value.’  Rather, he analyzes market sentiment when he wants to identify price direction and turning points.

The transparent inflation rates, versus the fed’s hidden printing press and the protection of one’s assets from the ‘banking machine,’ are some of the common ‘reasons’ many buy bitcoin and assign it value. Ryan agrees in these as principles, But it doesn’t tells us how to value Bitcoin, as these principles are too subjective. They may spark warm and fuzzy feelings about Bitcoin, but they don’t tell us when to buy or when to sell.

Caracas - Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro ordered banks to adopt the petro cryptocurrency as a unit of account Monday, as the country struggles to emerge from a severe political and economic crisis.

Public and private banks must now reflect all financial information in bolivars and petros, according to a resolution of the Sudeban banking regulator.

The move is part of Maduro's desperate attempts to steer out of five years of recession and inflation the International Monetary Fund predicts will reach one million percent this year. More than two million people have fled the country in the wake of the crisis.

Venezuela has also drastically devalued the bolivar currency, issued banknotes stripped of five zeroes in new "sovereign bolivars."

The economic plan also includes a 3 400% increase in the minimum wage, and a hike in petrol taxes, which for years have been the world's cheapest.

The socialist president, elected for another six-year term in May elections rejected by much of the international community as fraudulent, has fixed the currency to the country's widely-discredited cryptocurrency, the petro, which is in turn linked to the price of a barrel of Venezuelan oil (about $60).

The value-added tax, or VAT, is also climbing from 12% to 16%.

Maduro separately launched an offer of bonds backed by small gold bullion, he said would promote savings among Venezuelans, who see the local currency evaporating with hyperinflation.

"No one can say that gold loses its value," Maduro said on state TV, while showing two cards with the central bank emblems and some golden rectangles that he called "lingoticos" (little ingots).

The emission, backed in pieces of 1.5 and 2.5 grams (0.05 and 0.09 ounces) of gold, will begin September 11.

With the global cryptocurrency market now valued at over $250 billion, it's no surprise that bad actors are working to exploit such a lucrative sector of the economy. Fraudsters have stolen nearly $100 million from unsuspecting cryptocoin investors, according to reports.

One of the most common grifts is what's known as an exit scam, a process by which sinister entrepreneurs seek investments for an exciting new cryptocurrency, only to make off with investors' funds without ever delivering an initial coin offering (ICO). Earlier this year, a Vietnamese crypto company called Modern Tech stole $660 million from roughly 32,000 people in a single exit scam.

While exit scams are no doubt a major problem the still-nascent crypto market has to contend with, there are several steps investors can take to protect themselves from falling victim to fraudsters. Here are four tips to help you identify and avoid a possible phony ICO:

1. Be wary of unrealistic promises.
In the world of investing, there's no such thing as a sure thing. One way of recognizing a possible scam early on is to take notice of when you're being offered something that sounds too good to be true.

Is someone telling you you'll get a massive return right off the bat, or guaranteeing that you'll turn a profit in the end? That's a pretty good early warning sign that things might not be legit.

2. Vet the personnel.
You'll want to research the key people involved with the ICO. This way, you'll be able to sleep soundly with the knowledge that you're giving your money to a quality team that's capable of delivering the goods.

If an investment opportunity is valid, chances are the ICO team will include several people with cryptocurrency experience, or at least a history of working in finance and/or technology. If the ICO team is two guys who've never managed so much as a company softball team, you may want to look elsewhere.

More sophisticated scammers will fraudulently claim that their ICO is backed by trusted names in the cryptocurrency space. Double-check LinkedIn to make sure that the people who are allegedly working on the project actually list the ICO on their pages. If their profiles don't mention the currency you're about to invest in, that's a pretty big red flag.

3. Look under the hood.
Since exit scams are peddling nothing more than vaporware, ask to see the underlying software that token creators are trying to get you to invest in.

Check GitHub to see if your prospective investment opportunity is listed there, as most crypto projects should be open source. Healthy cryptocurrencies will also usually have a Telegram group where you can ask detailed questions about how the token will function. If all else fails, you can always ask the token creators to show you a prototype.

4. Make sure they're following best practices with your money.
Even if everything else seems legitimate, it's crucial to ensure that token creators are handling your investment funds properly.

One major red flag is if your ICO contributions are being sent directly to a trading exchange account on a site like Binance, which lets token creators automatically cash out any funds you've deposited. Essentially, this empowers token creators to take off with your money without any accountability for how your funds are used.

Another thing to watch for is how thoroughly the ICO company vets the money you're investing. Token creators should be following Anti-Money Laundering (AML) procedures to ensure that they're not receiving your money illegally. In addition, you'll also want to make sure that the company requires you to provide identification that allows them to comply with Know Your Customer (KYC) laws.

If the token creators are not following these best practices, then they are not in compliance with the law, and if they're not in compliance with the law, you shouldn't be giving them your money.

While scammers will always exist wherever there's money to be made, this shouldn't deter you from participating in the cryptocurrency market. By taking some precautions, you'll be able to protect yourself from possible crypto fraudsters, which will help you invest with real confidence.

Cryptocurrency web wallet provider Blockchain has filed a complaint in a U.S. federal court alleging attempted deception by a copycat website.

In a blogpost, Blockchain — whose website is hosted at blockchain.com — identifies the platform, blockchain.io, as a deliberate impostor that is attempting to rebrand itself in order to continue in its usual insincere practices from years back.

Deliberate Attempt to Mislead
Blockchain’s major concern over this development as reported includes the fact that the establishment is confusing customers and misleading them into thinking that they are “Blockchain”. This concern arises from the brand similarities which are thought to be designed deliberately.

They include:

1.Similar domain name to website (blockchain.io)
2.Similar colors to website (shades of dark blue)
3.Similar logo (a cube instead of a square) made up of similar geometric shapes (circles instead of rounded boxes).
4.Repurposed tagline “connecting the world to crypto” through a thesaurus to come up with “your gateway to the internet of value.”
