Enable blocking messages from newbies
« on: December 09, 2020, 03:21:01 PM »
I received a private message an account created Dec. 7, 2020 with zero post history.

The PM is basically selling a trading bot imitating a brand that's quite popular in another forum. Now I don't know if the offer is really legit or not but a serious seller wouldn't be sending unsolicited PM's to random people right?

I went on to check if I can enable a feature that blocks PMs from newbie/brand new account but there's no option for that. I can only see "Receive personal messages from All Members" or "Receive personal messages from Administrators only" from the Personal Messaging settings. Those options are too limited don't you think? What if I want to get PM from members except new accounts?

Enabling forum users to block unsolicited PMs from newbie accounts is a form of security. These accounts will most likely send phishing links to steal data and funds. Consider also the fact that scammers are increasing during these times (bullrun).

Here's the message if you're interested to know:

New accounts with different types of offers are accompanied by personal messages. I think these are annoying for some users. So beware of brand new users, bot. Sales offers, details of strategies, to ignore these, small rank accounts should be not allowed to send personal messages.

There is something wrong with my discussion. Message system cannot be turned off from new account. Because many project teams will come here, who can take help regularly and in different ways. So I think for the project team, that is, for the new account. Great, it's good to keep going.

I just received another PM.

If you’re involved with crypto and don’t use a trading bot you’re passing up free money!

GunBot trades around the clock at speeds and margins a human can’t contend, with the effect of guaranteed profit over a period of time.

Check out (link) for more info, and the free demo!

How long do we have to wait before blocking of messages from newbies/bots is enabled? Will it take a victim before this request is acted upon?

I've seen the effort to edit out PMs with instructions to contact admin but this method is reactive.

^ It's just waiting for reports but what if nobody else reports and someone already clicked on the link and got phished/scammed?

I just give - karma to such annoying pm. Blocking message from newbies has two point of views. Blocking enables will help only single individual like you, me, and who don't want to see this annoying message. But some new projects may come and they can ask assistance by PM from higher ranks or Mods. They will be deprived of their expectation.

This is pointless when you're dealing with throwaway accounts and most of scammers/spammers will just keep on creating new accounts over and over again.

Bee puts it well in his/her feedback:
~ But as I thought, it's most likely one-time accounts and reporting such users will be endless as long as the register button is still exsist. I think spamming should be prevented earlier before spammers do, otherwise this forum will become an attraction for malware spreaders as well.

You don't seem to realize the impact of getting infected with malwares yet. Any careless newbie or forum veterans could fall victims to this. Neither you nor I can guarantee we'll never make a mistake.

But some new projects may come and they can ask assistance by PM from higher ranks or Mods. They will be deprived of their expectation.
So what's stopping them from creating a topic and ask there? Besides, they can always ask forum officers directly instead of some random users on the internet. I'm sure they (admin/officers/mods) won't bother getting PM's from newbies/bots.

This feature is for members who don't want getting PMs from scammers/spammers. If you insist on allowing newbies/bots, then by all means don't use it.

I realize your point mate. I have only expressed my opinion just.  :)
I also expect something new features like Bitcointalk to block annoying message from newbies. It is reality that this option can be introduced if Admin think it as perfect. This is upto decision of admin.
