Do they have any red card suspensions or key players' injuries? I don't follow Bundesliga and BvB that closely so I don't know.

Looking at both teams, they seem to be on a very similar level in terms of league performance. Leipzig will have the home advantage, but their home/away stats show their points-per-game (PPG) for home games is greater than PPG for away game by +0.47 points, which is not that much.
Borussia on the other hand, tends to perform a tiny bit better in away games, their away PPG is greater than their home PPG by 0.20 points.

You're right, they exceeded the expectations of almost everyone. To think that Xabi Alonso before he became Bayer Leverkusen manager haven't managed the first team of any club in Europe is a big reason why he should be getting more praises than he's currently getting at the moment.
