On August 18, the servers of Bitcoin ATM manufacturer General Bytes were compromised by a zero-day attack, allowing the hackers to designate themselves the default admins and modify settings so that all funds were transferred to their wallet address.
The amount of funds stolen and the number of ATMs affected have not been disclosed, however, the company has urged ATM operators to update their software immediately.

General Bytes, which owns and manages 8827 Bitcoin ATMs in over 120 countries, acknowledged the hack on August 18. The company's headquarters are in Prague, Czech Republic, where the ATMs are also manufactured. The ATMs allow users to buy and sell more than 40 coins.

The vulnerability has existed since August 18, when the hacker's modifications updated the CAS software to version 20201208.

General Bytes has advised customers not to use their General Bytes ATM servers until they have updated their servers to patch releases 20220725.22 and 20220531.38 for customers operating on 20220531.

Customers have also been encouraged to alter their server firewall settings so that the CAS admin interface may only be accessed from approved IP addresses, among other considerations.

General Bytes also encouraged customers to examine their SELL Crypto Setting before reactivating the terminals to ensure that the hackers did not change the settings so that any received funds would instead be retransferred to them (and not the customers).

General Bytes stated that multiple security assessments had been performed since its beginning in 2020, none of which had found this vulnerability.

How the attack happened

According to General Bytes' security advisory team, the hackers used a zero-day vulnerability exploit to obtain access to the company's Crypto Application Server (CAS) and steal the funds.

The CAS server oversees the whole functioning of the ATM, including the execution of crypto buying and selling on exchanges and which currencies are supported.

The company believes the hackers scanned for vulnerable servers operating on TCP ports 7777 or 443, including servers housed on General Bytes' own cloud service.

The hackers then added themselves as a default admin on the CAS, calling themselves gb, and then modified the "buy" and "sell" settings such that any crypto received by the Bitcoin ATM would instead be transferred to the hacker's wallet address.

Cryptocurrency price update: CARDANO PRICE ANALYSIS : ADA continues its upward trend above the $0.55 support.

After fears over the beginning of a downtrend yesterday, Cardano price analysis is now showing strong indications. Following a 3 percent loss, the price dropped yesterday to $0.5475.
ADA was quick to re-enforce bullish momentum today, however, and settle above the $0.55 support level. Over the period of the day, further positive momentum may exceed the $0.60 price level. Before retracing, price may possibly go as far as the $0.67-$0.69 range. With a current price of $0.5565, which is up 0.2 percent from yesterday, the market cap of ADA increased by 2 percent to $19.8 billion.

Cardano price analysis's 24-hour candlestick chart shows price re-discovering the uptrend from the day before, which helped price break over the $0.55 resistance for the first time in more than two months. ADA increased to $0.57 today after losing 4% yesterday and still on pace to break the next resistance level at $0.60. Price has maintained a higher level than the critical moving averages, such as the 9 and 21-day moving averages and the 50-day EMA at $0.5464.

Technical indicators strongly suggest that a rise upward to the bullish target price range of $0.67–$0.69 is likely to take place during the next few weeks. The 24-hour chart of the relative strength index shows a strong and recent rally in the value of the ADA market after rising back above 60. Trading activity during the last 24 hours decreased by 12 percent, which suggests price consolidation at the present price. As ADA stabilises above $0.55, the moving average convergence divergence (MACD) curve also exhibits a positive divergence. Support is between $0.52 and $0.53, and then $0.50 in the event that ADA notices a change in trend during the next 24 hours.

Introduction

An economy is a very important parameter for any country to show its power among other nations. The USA is not just a military superpower; it is also one of the richest countries. Why does everyone question the falling GDP of a country? Because a country needs to have a stable economy. So, Government creates and implements policies along with the Central Banks.

Central Banks are financial organisations with exclusive authority over the creation and distribution of money and credit for a country or a group of countries. The central bank is typically in charge of monetary policy creation and regulation of member banks. These banks work hand in hand with Government to create policies and enforce them in the interest of the common people. Although, history has taught us that these Government Institutions can often become corrupted while losing the trust of the common people. The Sri Lankan Crisis is a prime example. So, the idea of cryptocurrencies that allows the creation of currency which is not controlled by the Government or any particular organisation, feels natural.

It will be extremely challenging for the Central Banks to create monetary policies to regulate the money supply if a cryptocurrency like bitcoin has to become a substantial medium of exchange in the nation. This will result in a country losing its monetary sovereignty. All of the world's leading economies, including India, share this worry. All this said, the Economy is the backbone of any country, and if someone is to play with it, can destabilize the whole structure of a country. So, yeah that source can topple any Government in power.

Additionally, the quick inflow and outflow of cryptocurrencies across borders, and even if they are recognized as crypto assets, Central Banks are concerned about such money fleeing their borders during economic downturns. This money cannot be accounted for easily without knowing the transfer being happening and especially Governments need to balance the inflow and outflow of money for a stable fiat currency on which our whole institution is based. This unchecked flow of Currency deteriorates the value of the fiat currency of that nation which leads to economic slowdowns. Not just that, but the security of the nation is dependent on this flow of money. Many terrorist cells commit financial terrorism which using crypto to collect funds from people by solicitation and later use these funds for terror actions.

Another big concern of the government is tax avoidance through the use of cryptocurrency transactions. It may make it easier for criminal activities in general, such as tax evasion. Along with tax evasion, Bribes can easily be transferred using cryptocurrency because the system is decentralized. Corruption has no boundaries especially if the system doesn’t track the transaction. All that talk about a decentralized system comes with the difficulty for the Government to know what and how much is being transferred. It provides investors with a means of hiding money from tax authorities. As a result, there may be a tax gap, which would cost the government money. The government actually use this money to function and if the government does not collect enough tax, it might need to rely on funding from other institutions which might lead to a similar situation in Sri Lanka.

So, in a retrospect, Crypto does have the power to cripple the policies created by the government but it depends on how the Government incorporates the idea of Crypto in its current financial ecosystem. Although, it is said about books as well which are the most basic tool to change someone’s mind and can create a revolution in minds. Crypto being such a revolutionary technology utilises the mind of people to create an equal society where everyone has access to such financial institutions which our current one doesn’t. So, if one does ask about the dangers of Crypto, it totally depends on how corrupt the user is and how they wish to use the facilities given to them.

While in most scenarios, Crypto is being used by many people for money transfers, even used by people who emigrated from Ukraine during the Russian invasion to have some money at their disposal. The Dubai World Trade Centre Authority's Dubai World Trade Centre Authority will manage the regulation, governance, and licensing of cryptocurrencies, NFTs, and other digital assets.

The key duties of the VARA include regulating the creation of new crypto tokens, regulating and managing the trade of virtual assets, making sure that strict security requirements are followed, keeping track of transactions, and more.

The VARA is also responsible for the transfer of virtual assets, management services, exchange services, running platforms for virtual assets, and custody of virtual assets.

Additionally, according to the new rule, no one can engage in crypto-related operations without the Dubai VARA's consent. In addition, people who wish to deal in virtual assets will have to establish a presence in Dubai.

Dubai’s establishment as a Hub
