Title: What if Government bans Bitcoins?
Post by: ambar33n on July 14, 2018, 10:02:54 PM
Looking at the decentralized nature of crypto-currencies,Wonder if govt bans Bitcoins in future??Is it possible let's say by blocking all sites which relate to Bitcoin wallets/payments etc over the internet. In that case what would happen to our existing coins held in those wallets??

If a government bans Bitcoin,  I believe we don't have the voice to stop it.  That would be the worst thing to happen.  I am thankful enough that my country haven't think about of the ban of Bitcoin.  In fact the crypto community in my country has been active and increasing.

That is the most worst things happen. If the government bans bitcoin due to any valid reasons, like they cannot earn from it or etc. The other coins like bitcoin are also ban. If that's happen many people working on this job will suffer and worries how to find another job as easy as like bitcoins do. We hope that any government will think that this coins helped many people to earn, even working at home.

Cryptocurrencies are created precisely to prevent them from being banned. Decentralization of their management and anonymity of wallets. These things will greatly interfere with the cryptocurrency ban.

what is it that the government is going to ban, is it the payment I mean the transactions of bitcoin or bitcoin itself? . to me the government can only ban bitcoin transaction but not bitcoin itself. the government has no power over bitcoin and bitcoin has spread far enough for the government to be able to stop it. we are living in the future not the past and we can continue using the old way of doing things, it is high time these people in government accept bitcoin.

Well, in my opinion, the percentage of all governments banning crypto around the world is only few percent. I don't think that all countries ban it. If it happens, I think that the crypto starts for dying. However, we can't also predict about it because cryptos relate to person to person.

They can't ban bitcoin, it's just not really possibly logistically.  They can make it illegal I guess, but you can't even realistically track people using it unless you can attach a BTC wallet address to a person.  Even if you did that successfully, there's no way you could prosecute based on that information alone, since anyone can use your address if you give them your information.  There's also no central point BTC uses to base their network around, it's completely decentralized.  It's decentralized specifically for this reason, so governments and other hostile entities can't fuck with it.  This leaves it open for whales to manipulate the price, but that wont last forever because as more money enters the market it becomes more and more difficult for the price to get manipulated.

If ever government bans bitcoin then you either have to use VPN so that you can still access your coins or you just have to give up holding those coins and find other ways to make money. Personally, if our government decides to ban it then I would just stop using it because I don't want to violate the law and be penalized for it. Although, this would be less likely to happen in our country because they already give licenses to various companies that wanted to operate cryptocurrency related transactions.

Currently there are countries that ban Bitcoin, and in my country also prohibit transactions using Bitcoin, so we are here if we want to use Bitcoin to spend, then we exchange it first with Fiat currency first, but if our country blocks the internet site there there is our digital assets, so we will open it using Vpn from other countries, and we will still be free to play Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency. That doesn't matter to us.

Those who think that no government (except those run by tinpot dictators) would take the extreme step of banning Bitcoin need a lesson in history. There was a time when holding gold bullion was a crime in America, punishable by a sentence of up to ten years in prison. In 1933, American President Franklin D Roosevelt issued an order requiring all Americans to hand over their gold holdings to the Federal Reserve Bank.

Bitcoin is not connected to any region or financial institution. There are dozens of popular exchanges, and even if they don't exist, all you need is a wallet and network connection to be able to do bitcoin transactions. The blockchain built above does not require an institution to operate it, and indeed is the complete antithesis of such an idea, operating as a general ledger rather than a private one. Without a central location to be closed, meaningful crackdown must be a global effort. Even if a country somehow prevents bitcoin transactions from happening within their borders, a simple VPN or proxy system will allow users to operate internationally with little problem. If the government can effectively stop peer to peer networks, they will close illegal practices of torrent sites more than a decade ago. Even the success of torrent sites like the hydra is not a perfect analogy for bitcoin, because the legal status of cryptocurreny is much easier to debate. A fairer comparison is what is called the dark web. Although individual sites, servers and people involved with various activities there can sometimes be arrested for illegal activities, it would be ridiculous if the government could regulate the entire network. Trying to ban bitcoin or set it up in a way that allows true supervision to be much the same. Not possible at the technical level. Even tracking individuals who have a particular wallet is difficult. Although the public blockchain allows the government or law enforcement to track certain bitcoins, binding it to people in the real world is very difficult. The owner can hide his identity with VPN, Tor, or even physically move his wallet in the form of cold storage (offline), making it invisible to the world.

Bitcoin has been around the fringes of financial markets for less than a decade, but is slowly gaining prominence as an alternative asset class. Can the government of any major country step in and do the unthinkable ban Bitcoin? If a government decides to make trading or possessing Bitcoins illegal, questions will be raised about how exactly it will enforce such a ban. It is impossible for a government to seize your Bitcoins, unless you decide to handover your private keys. However, the majority of citizens and institutions like to stay on the right side of the law. So the demand for Bitcoin would plummet if the government decided to ban it. All exchanges in that country would also be shuttered and buying/selling Bitcoin would be difficult and risky. This would suffocate Bitcoin in that country and the government’s objectives might be achieved.
