Title: "Not Your Keys, Not Your Bitcoin"
Post by: Zed0X on November 19, 2020, 05:08:43 PM
I just found out about this new site created mainly to educate beginners in the crypto industry. It highlights the importance of privacy, non-custodial wallets, security, and all that stuff against scams. It is also a quick read (you won't get bored). Another plus factor to me is the simple design and that it loads fast.

I believe that every newbie should learn one of the most important rules that no one and under no circumstances should you transfer personal information, including the secret keys to your assets. In addition, if the resource really provides an opportunity to get the first basics for a cryptocurrency user, then this is a good job for the entire cryptocurrency market, since the user community is growing.

I'm on the opinion that you never bothered opening the informative website I put in the OP. Had you done that, you would never associate scam and non-custodial wallets. Seriosuly, take a look https://notyourkeys.org/

Allow me to quote some important details....

The recent serious case:
Quote
Since the inception of Bitcoin and the cryptocurrency industry, there have been approximately 47 exchanges hacked, with approximately $2.1 billion in stolen money from exchange users.

The recommendation to combat the hacking crime:
Quote
Non-custodial wallets are wallets whereas your wallet’s recovery seed isn’t stored on any company’s servers. Instead, the recovery seed is only stored safely and encrypted locally on your device.

The advantage for us:
Quote
You have full self custody over your funds, and nobody would be able to freeze or take control over your funds.

Correct me if I'm wrong for I believe "open rebuke is better than hidden love." ;)

Now a lot of similar proposals, but everything has its own specifics, you need to gather as much information, and everything to check - it is important.

I think everyone has heard a lot of stories when guys lost passwords from their wallets and lost access to cryptocurrency. and many of them have lost very large sums of money, even huge fortunes. so be responsible, save your passwords and take care of security

https://notyourkeys.org/ is a very good read for beginners.

One of the points is dangerously oversimplified imo:

Quote
Non-custodial wallets are wallets whereas your wallet’s recovery seed isn’t stored on any company’s servers. Instead, the recovery seed is only stored safely and encrypted locally on your device.

The wallet’s recovery seed need the wallet software in working condition to recover the privkeys. Non-custodial web wallets exist, they would would be gone if the website is gone. For desktop apps: does it depend on a single server, can it show the keys while offline, is it auto-updating? If last 2 answers are not Yes and No then saving the keys too is a must (unless this recovery seed can also be used with other types of wallets)
