Have you heard phrase "Everything old is new again"? So i expect we'll get either modified or rebrand of old-stuff, along with "integrating" current technology trend into cryptocurrency or blockchain. Ordinal/Rune are modification of NFT and currently some new project use "AI" word for their marketing.

Japan's DMM Bitcoin exchange loses over $300m of cryptocurrency

TOKYO (Reuters) -- Japan's cryptocurrency exchange DMM Bitcoin said on Friday that it had lost 4,502.9 bitcoin, worth about 48.2 billion yen or $308 million, in what the company called an "unauthorized leak."

It gave no details of how the incident occurred or whether an outside party had been involved, but said it was investigating and had restricted some services in response... Read more here.

It's been some time since exchange/service hack lead to such huge financial loss. And while they they'll replace customer Bitcoin, who knows when will customer receive the replacement. Your opinion is greatly appreciated.

Crypto Wallets / Re: How can we go beyond crypto wallet basics
« on: May 31, 2024, 12:07:38 PM »
I have come to realise that crypto wallets are not just only a place to store digital coins and that they can also be a gateway to access the whole Web3 thingy, because I have been used thinking that crypto wallets are just for storing coins like the early days of trust wallet, metamask and the likes.

There's nothing wrong using wallet just to store coin private key of certain coin though.

Looking at the development we have had over time now, I have seen my friends using wallets for several thing like the Launchpads, airdrops, staking and the like of the BWB wallet that has all these and you wonder if there are much difference between an exchange and spot platform.

If you have been actively participating in the crypto space lately you would have even noticed some folks minting NFTs with some of these wallets and it keeps me thinking of what can be made out of these things in future, I think if we there can be a place to merge everything together instead of separating them will help have a wholistic view of the whole wallets.

But it also add more burden to the developer and potentially create more security hole.

Why on earth do you guys think he would pardon Ross Ulbricht now, when he had 4 years as president to do so, but never bothered to?

--snip--

While i shared this news, personally i think such thing is unlikely to happen. But today i see so many news media which roughly state Trump found guilty on all 34 charges. So if he ended up jailed due to those charges, his promise no longer matter anyway.

This is ridiculous, some groups and politicians must really hate someone else having some privacy. I also worry about other criteria of "CVC mixing", especially these points which are very common feature on many cryptocurrency wallet.
These points are an explanation of convertible virtual currency
(CVC) mixing, so that any service that contains points from A to F is considered a mixer.
The general definition of a mixer, according to https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/FR-2023-10-23/pdf/2023-23449.pdf, is any service that leads to difficulty connecting inputs and outputs, and the conditions stated from A to F apply to it.

I'm not familiar with legal terms, but these parts (what i bold on below quote) imply that certain service only need to meet 1 of 6 mentioned criteria. But CMIIW.

(3) CVC mixing. (i) The term ‘‘CVC mixing’’ means the facilitation of CVC transactions in a manner that obfuscates the source, destination, or amount involved in one or more transactions, regardless of the type of protocol or service used, such as:
Quote from: https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/FR-2023-10-23/pdf/2023-23449.pdf
(E) Exchanging between types of CVC or other digital assets; or
(F) Facilitating user-initiated delays in transactional activity.

Major update to this case as a BIP (Bitcoin Improvement Proposal) has formally been submitted to the mailing list and the bips Github repository.
--snip--

While it's good to see some progress, personally i think it's a shame they're not considering changing coin supply/mining reward. It'll make some dubious people use ASIC to mine when the reward is still high, with goal selling it or spam testnet4 at big scale in the future.

It is funny because these keys cost nothing and users can change them easily and cheap. With crypto, that key market only grew. Keys became more available and affordable. People prefer to have limited functions and annoying "active windows" warning message for years, than to spend 5-10 dollars and forget about it. That is a cost of 1 cup of coffee...

I get your point, although "cost of 1 cup of coffee" only applies on some country/place.

I am not a Windows huge fan, but I see that a lot of people are against it. This makes me wonder, when banks operate with huge money and most important other peoples money, why most of banking operators have Windows installed on their working PC. Mostly their software is for Windows. All those managers and those who work with customers, have windows based devices. We, cryptocurrency community, say that Windows is no good if we want to protect our money. But banks used Windows to operate with other peoples money, large amount of money. Dont you find it strange?

Aside from what @NotATether said, i expect their security expert manually configure those windows computer to be more secure. Usually it comes with trade-off, such as slower computer performance or you only can access certain server.

The warning makes sense, although it's nothing new or unique with exception of using AI to impersonate someone.

Can there be things we can do as individual cryptocurrency supporters to help in limiting the reach of these ever adaptive and enticing scams? Or should we resigned to accept that this is already a normal way of life in this industry?

Even with cautious or warning message by public figure or government, few people keep falling to such scam. So aside from reminding other people what they've heard before, i don't know other effective ways to prevent someone got scammed.

(B) Using programmatic or algorithmic code to coordinate, manage, or manipulate the structure of a transaction;

(D) Creating and using single-use wallets, addresses, or accounts, and sending CVC through such wallets, addresses, or accounts through a series of independent transactions;

(E) Exchanging between types of CVC or other digital assets;

The news state they're not major player in UK, so it's probably they don't have or don't want allocate resource to handle people who misuse cryptocurrency. Although looking at https://help.kroo.com/hc/en-gb/articles/9320269621649-Can-I-use-cryptocurrency, there's only about 1 week distance between their announcement and when this change applies. It's too short and i expect few of their customer will be surprised after finding their transaction blocked or account frozen.

I find it funny when on crypto related forums people discuss pros and cons of unlicensed copies of Windows. I have looked on this forum, but on our neighbor forum we have windows key sellers. <$5 and your windows will be licensed. Add more $5 and you get a key for antivirus license. Nevertheless, licensed copy of Windows or not, it does not matter, as user himself makes security mistakes. Even after buying Mac, users isnt insured against copy/pasting his key on a phishing page.

I don't see what's so funny, when i've seen few people do their work/job on non-activated Windows. And while it's true there are many places to buy cheap windows or software key, there's risk the key become invalid if the seller turns out obtain it illegally. You probably want to read this article, https://www.howtogeek.com/392080/cheap-windows-10-keys-do-they-work//

Bankman-Fried lieutenant Ryan Salame gets 7.5 years in prison for role in FTX debacle

The former chief executive of FTX’s Bahamas subsidiary has ben ordered to spend 7 1/2 years in prison, the first of Sam Bankman-Fried’s close associates to be sentenced in the wake of the cryptocurrency exchange’s implosion.

Ryan Salame appeared in a Manhattan courtroom Tuesday, after reaching a plea deal with federal prosecutors in September, weeks before FTX founder Bankman-Fried was due to stand trial for stealing about $10 billion from customers, investors, and lenders... Read more here.

It seems total prison time and fine he receive is far lighter than Sam, even though he had high position on FTX. Your opinion is greatly appreciated.

If anyone wants to know more about Linux and Bitcoin, they can take a look at a distro called BitKey: BitKey - Secure Bitcoin Swiss Army Knife.

I remember i saw this distro long time ago, but it seems it haven't release new version on very long time. So IMO we shouldn't mention it to beginner.

--snip--
I am speaking from my experience. Updates will inevitably stop after a period of time. The period of time may vary depending on the country, but they will inevitably stop. This is what happened to me at least, as they give you a trial period to use all the features with the ability to update automatically, but after a period of time some important features will stop ( For example, you cannot customize the Windows theme, and automatic updates are also stopped, but you can still install updates manually.

As you know, there are security vulnerabilities that are discovered from time to time in Windows and are fixed through updates, so stopping the update may cause serious problems in the future.

I see. Maybe those answer are either outdated or only based on a bit of experience.

If he wants to win over everyone who invests in crypto, I advise him only one thing - let him put the tax on crypto at 1% and everyone will vote for him ;D

It would be very tempting promise ;D.

I understand Trump's promises that he made towards cryptocurrencies and his attempt to win the community's affection and the great propaganda he is promoting for himself as a sponsor of cryptocurrencies, but I did not fully understand why he was interested in the Ross Ulbricht case? I also do not know whether the president has the powers to cancel the ruling issued by the court?

Maybe he expect vote from those who wish to see Ross freed or agree that Ross receive excessive punishment. If you haven't checked https://freeross.org/, it state almost 600K people signed petition and over 250 organization or public figure support this action.

While i agree Visa is more frequently used for real-life activity, using Visa isn't free. Usually there's monthly fee imposed by bank which issue your card. The merchant sometimes pay few percentage fee if you pay them using card, where they increase their goods/services cost to overcome it.
Most cards here in Europe have zero-fee card maintenance and issuance, the banks usually might charge a fee for the account and app but in most cases if you're with them for the wage or mortgage that comes free too. As for the percentages, the PoS from ING is lent for only 0.4% fees on the sales, including banking and tech support, at 10sat/vb you would need to sell only over $400 to compete with them because you need to factor also the cost of you suing those inputs.

LN would be the only one coming close, but then you would have the initial cost of opening one and funding it, so still a tight race.

I just did quick search and it seems what you said is accurate, so it looks like the condition is different compared on other developed country (such as US). In that case, LN and stablecoin (on network with very lower TX fee) doesn't seems to offer much advantage.
