Coinbase customers are reporting issues with this exchange saying they have "zero balance" on their accounts, options for selling and buying are not working, but Coinase claims "assets are safu."
From their official twitter account they posted a tweet confirming they are aware of this and they are investigating it.
Strange how this things always happens when Bitcoin goes up.
We are aware that some users may see a zero balance across their Coinbase accounts & may experience errors in buying or selling. Our team is investigating this & will provide an update shortly. Your assets are safe.

Coinbase is one of the most reputed exchanges out there and it's strange to hear something like that about them, but you're right not your keys not your coins, and anyone who keep their coins at exchanges are allowing others to own their keys, and if keys are not their then the coins are also not their.
