Local Board Flags

I understand that adding flags to local boards is something that fits the design of the forum.

However, this is quite complicated, because local boards aren't based in a location, but in a language.

For example, Portuguese local board have 99% of Brazilians posters (i haven't even seen a someone from elsewhere yet), and we see a Portugal flag when we log in.

Is it possible to add more flags? maybe remove them?

What do you guys think?

I know this is problematic and it is difficult to find a solution.

Hmm. This is a good point, but this is not the only board. If you look at the Arabic local board, the United Arab Emirates flag represents 22 Arab countries, all of which speak Arabic. Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, and Montenegro have a single board with a mixed flag like the one below.



Do you like gathering other flags in the same image as they did for Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, and Montenegro? If so, you may propose that the admin do the same for the Portuguese board.

As for the Arabic board, I propose using this picture as it represents the entire arab.

I don't know what is situation in your local board here, but in our local board there is almost no activity, so I am not going to be concerned about flags right now.

I think that only way to add flag of Brazil is to create additional local sub-board in Portuguese board, but language is still the same so I don't think this is such a big issue.
btw is anyone doing stats for all local boards like Rikafip is doing in bitcointalk forum?

As px-z is scrapping all data here, he could create a website where this data could be shared and collected by other users. Or just post by himself like Rikafip does...

Too much work for a small forum. It may pay out in the long run if the forum grows.

I think your idea is a nice one, but I believe it may be somewhat tough decision for the admin/moderators to set up different flags for a language. I believe community voting can be a good step for such purpose.

Moderators of each local board should arrange polls on their local boards to ask members of their local board about the flag that they want on that local board. The flag with most votes may be set as the default flag of that local board.

like the example OP used that Brazillain are more active in the Portuguese board we can tell which group would win,  this the board name would have to be changed.

If local board are just based on languages, what would be the name of all English, Spanish, French or Arabic speaking country?
I felt the country give the sense of belongness not the language. Well let's not complicate things too much.
In the second question I would support removing the flags if the members in the board find it uncomfortable. Adding multiple flags is going to be a chore. Besides the board was created by the request of an active citizen or by the Admin directly. Another country been more active doesn't mean they require a flag,  it just shows that they deserve their own local board and the inactive local board can be replaced. My personal thoughts.

True, this is the Arab League flag, but it represents the Arab countries and not all countries that speak the Arabic language.I suggest that the first letter of each language be chosen to indicate the flag -----> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Language_recognition_chart

This is definitely a very good observation, but I still honestly think the country flags in the local boards doesnt mean much, it's probably just a way to identify with what part of the world makes up that community, it does not necessarily mean that every body in that community must come from the same country, what matters is that they all speak the same local language and understand themselves perfectly.

Take for example, we do have our own Nigerian local board with our flag, but some times, I do see comments from non Nigerians, and even I myself also do at times, post on other local boards that is not a Nigerian board, but is English or pidgin speaking, like for example, the Ghana 🇬🇭 local board.

So, for me, I've always seen the flags as a symbol of the language of the people that make up that community, and not the country itself, and what this means is that, any body from any part of the world that understands that language can participate in discussion on that board.

If the admin wants to continue to use a flag that represents all of the Arab countries, then the Arab League flag fits there (if I am not wrong). It's kind of impossible to gather all the flags of the countries that speak Arabic and put them on one board. As for the first later, I guess that will also consume enough space there. Of course, this is just my opinion and you might have a different than mine. For now, the admin is not here and not taking any decision regarding this. I just proposed what I think will be good.

The admin might argue that the language is still the same. It's Arabic. So, the name of the board is correct. Only the usage of the flags isn't the most accurate and there is room for improvement. As for Portuguese, I understand that most of their users come from Brazil, but that is not the only country that speaks Portuguese. There are at least nine more: Angola, Cape Verde, East Timor, Guinea Bissau, Macau, Mozambique, Portugal, & São Tomé and Príncipe speak Portuguese according to Wikipedia. Now if people from those countries also ask to use their country flag, then it will be a mess for the Admin to decide what they should do. So, let them decide what they want to do. We can suggest only

I don't care about detailed information like Rikafip is doing.
All I wanted to see is what local boards and members are most active in altcointalks forum.
I am still thinking what would be the right strategy to increasing local activity.

It could be that the only essence of adding the flags is for aesthetics. And if that is the case, it is simple to just remove all the flags. Let the language represent the locals and not the flag.

This could be another good solution. Local boards could be based on language only. There are nine or ten countries that speak Portuguese and there are 23 or 25 countries that speak Arabic. Two boards will cover all those countries. 20 countries Speak Spanish! Let's see if admin come up with a solution. Even though the current system does no harm to the community.

You are 100% right, these examples that you have used are good enough to give OP a good solution of the problem. However this problem should arise in front of the local moderators of the country OP is talking about or they should be mentioned here so that they would think of changing the country flag. Plus I think there is no board for Brazil please correct me if I am wrong.

As upon searching I found none, that's why OP is concerned that Portugal section is filled with Brazilian people so they deserve another section. I suggest instead of combining these two, Brazil should be given another separate board. That's just a thought because I know how it feels to not see your country in the local boards, we are still missing our country name on BTT.
