Title: Do Airdrops build real communities or ephemeral ones ?
Post by: CryptoGirl on August 14, 2018, 12:08:15 PM
It is now a common practice to airdrop some tokens to get people to join telegram and twitter etc ...
Is it building a real community ?
Are these people that already join hundreds of other projects really interested in the project ?
Or they would dumb it in the nearest opportunity ?
a big number would even unfollow and leave channel after getting the tokens ....

Do airdrops create real communities? or just ephemeral ones ?

As an Airdrop Hunter, first, let me answer your questions briefly -

Is it building a real community? Yes
Are these people that already join hundreds of other projects really interested in the project? Generally NO. There are exceptions anyhow
Or they would dump it in the nearest opportunity? Yes, with few exceptions
a big number would even unfollow and leave channel after getting the tokens .... Yes

Do airdrops create real communities? or just ephemeral ones? It's short living but serves the purpose.

Let me answer in detail. Generally, airdrops are meant to build a healthy community so as to attract potential big investors during the private sale, preICO & ICO stages. If you are a big investor, will you invest in a project which has only 500 members in their social media community? Definitely NO, because the community backing is very less. However, if you have around 20K+ members then you might think about investing. Because 20k members are actually gonna use the tokens without the usage, the tokens are worth nothing. So the community built is real and of course ephemeral but it serves the purpose of attracting investments. I think once the money has come in, you actually don't need a big community to follow in social media. All you have to worry is about trading volume and real-time usage of the token.

Will we dump it in the nearest opportunity? Yeah, most probably we will look for a way to dump the coins once they get listed in an exchange because we actually don't care and we don't invest a penny into them. But if some news about some project catches our eyes, we might start following the project and may hold the token or even invest in them. Few examples in my experience are Kepler, UBEX and WAB.

Its tough to say.. and hard to really generalize everyone into one group.. I'd say for sure that it isn't building a community but maybe the false skeleton of one which also may be important.. new retail investors do value seeing high twitter followers and telegram users even if most of them are fake (quite frankly they just don't know any better)... its tough to say if it adds any value or not.. on the surface it may not help, but having a very low participation count can probably hurt.

Yes Airdrops can build real communities because followers will contribute to the promotion. Though airdrops themselves are very useful for the initial stage of introduction in a project that serves as an attraction for investors.
And air drops can also be ephemeral ones  communities that are not real because most followers will disappear after they get rewarded.

No.

Are these people that already join hundreds of other projects really interested in the project ?

Of course NOT.

Of course dump by first occasion.

Do airdrops create real communities? or just ephemeral ones ?

I think the answer is straightforward: such airdrops create ephemeral communities (if implemented and used badly on big scale because of stupidity or scam attempt).

Is it building a real community?
It helps increase the numbers but a lot of these accounts are bots and from multiple accounts.

Are these people that already join hundreds of other projects really interested in the project ?
A small percentage does. Most are merely interested in the airdrop

Or they would dumb it in the nearest opportunity?
a big number would even unfollow and leave channel after getting the tokens ....

Since a majority are just interested in airdrops, a dump is very likely to happen and many leaving the group is expected

Do airdrops create real communities? or just ephemeral ones ?
It creates real community somehow. Out of 10,000 members, more or less 1,000 will remain interested in the project even after airdrop distribution

I don't think airdrop people ever come back to that group again. It is not real. But companies are showing their telegram members to others to say "look we have lots of users" etc.

I think there can be airdrops to share the token, and have it used (this will make a distributed economy), but joining to telegram groups etc. shouldn't be necessary.

In my own experience it does not create a real community but bunch of people who are just there to spam and request for their token. The only chat they have is airdrop and same thing goes to bounty hunters. They don't care about the progress of the project

Airdrops do not make real communities and it is proven and most of those people the participate in airdrops uses
multiple accounts for cheating, I'm not saying all but "most" of them. Some ICOs promotes their project with airdrop
and one of the conditions is to participate in their main telegram group to make a shill effect and illusion that the
project is supported by a lot of investors but most of the members are bots in especially when the telegram group
reaches thousands of member from 50k and up.

Most of the communities with purely bot accounts do not have any discussions or barely have a discussion on their
group and this is pretty obvious that it creates only fake communities with fake people that use multiple accounts to
cheat on airdrops.

Wayback in 2017 telegram groups rarely reaches 5k members in it and groups of ICOs on telegram normally reaches
1k to 1.5k people "real people". ::)

Usually most of the airdrop participants just want to get a free token. So after getting the token will be sold for the price high and will not be again with the logic and then look for another AirDrop project. Although the community looks a lot but vast, because it is not active after getting a AirDrop.

This is why i am not usually moved by the number of participants or members on the official telegram group group of any project, because from experience, it tend not to add any value to the project, most especially on the long run.

I think that airdrop can be helping a lot in building a strong and loyal community but there are also many other equally important factors that should be done if one is thinking of a community that can withstand the test of time. One factor is just a portion of it all.

I don't really think airdrops build genuine communities. They are just a way of creating buzz and hype concerning the project in question and will mostly likely serve their purpose. However, once this is done, airdroppers will most certainly move on to the next available project on the menu. Building a genuine community requires patience and will most certainly happen naturally depending on what people see in your project.

What can unite people? Interest, financial attractiveness. While people will see the benefits from the project, they will be there, as soon as it is not profitable, they will leave. The majority of people will do this.

Well airdrops create interests and attract people to at least look at the projects.  It is indeed a stepping stone to create a community.  Wether it will produce a solid community or not depends on the admin/developer of the project.  A person will stick to something when it sees potential and a possible good result for them.  So I think airdrop is still useful but on how to utilize it to the fullest depends to the one running the airdrop.

I do not know whether this is good or not because I have just jumped into a world like this and I will learn for a better future. I find it hard to get build genuine comunities We'll see the next few days or months. This is very nice

To all those who think airdrops don't build a real community, well, I beg to differ, I sincerely think airdrops does build a real community, but the thing is it all depends on how the airdrop campaign was or is been organized, there are way to turn airdrop participants to investors as well as future users of whatever product you are building, airdrop if run in a proper way have alot of advantages and brings a lot of good results to the project, but if run in a wrong way, it's does end of bad for the project and the investors always suffer.

Airdrops are part of the bounty campaign, hunters with little time will enjoy airdrops.
Advantages of airdrop:
+ Helping the project reach a large number of users and wallets;
+ Help the project to have a beautiful profile (the number of people following Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Telegram accounts) in a quick time, attracting potential investors;
+ Help the project take advantage of more hunters;
+ Easy to conduct, low cost.

Disadvantages of airdrop:
+ Not many loyal fans. Hunters who have pursued bounty for a few months often love the project :)
+ The token value that hunter receives is very low;
+ Easy to be abused: many people have hundreds of emails & Telegram accounts to participate in the airdrop as a main profession. They can earn $100-200 USD in a successful airdrop campaign.

Currently, I don't have much confidence in airdrops, even I don't want to waste time with airdrops.
