Yes ethereum is can be used for investment in ICOs projects and also it can be used for payment options, building smart contract and decentralize application dapps on ethereum of platform, but i don't think ethereum is better alternative of bitcoin due to it different purpose, bitcoin is cryptocurrency and ethereum is for smart contract and decentralize application.
