People are mainly just afraid of things they don't understand.  I've been doing crypto for a year and I still have difficulty explaining it to other people because I don't understand it well enough.  I imagine it's significantly more daunting to understand if you don't have any understanding of computers, internet, or technology in general.  For most old people that is likely the case.  Then on top of their lack of understanding here the media tends to throw cryptocurrency under a bus and speaks only negatively about it, further causing people to distance themselves from it.
