In some countries it is not hard to reissue sim card with someones phone number and get an access to his telegram if persons hasnt set any protection. With that, I would not keep anything valuable on a telegram wallet, or would keep something in a wallet that I dont have full control or dont have full understanding how it works. No one has canceled "not your keys, not your crypto" rule.

Do you mean SIM swap or telecommunication provider who give their customer a phone number that has been abandoned by old customer? Anyway, i believe such attack could be avoided if you enabled two-step verification (2VA), where the attacker also need to know the password. And it's definitely better to use self-custodial wallet since the beginning.

Decentralized Team / Re: BG shilling and forum actions!
« on: September 20, 2024, 12:58:51 PM »
Simply changing the text into a red one or other color would be enough. Something that would quickly draw the attention of the reader of a shiller's post. If I would immediately notice that, I wouldn't bother reading the whole post because I already know what's to come.

I agree, it's rather lenient where another exchange decided to imitate BG action. Today i noticed user Pips Flow[1] mention exchange called BingX on almost of all his recent posts. Their shilling also spotted on different forum[2].

I define an airdrop to be when somebody gives you free coins for doing a task, so how the hell does Uncle Gary see it as a security?

Maybe he is thinking the same thing as I'm thinking and is implying this only for obscure shitcoins.

That's possible, since some project avoid paying expert who can do proper testing/review by conducting airdrop where they expect people to perform test/review for token that could be worthless. But don't forget SEC classify token as securities, where the sell/distribution is monitored more closely.

The Human Rights Foundation (HRF) has awarded its latest round of Bitcoin Development Fund grants, distributing 10 Bitcoin (approximately $590,000) to 20 global projects.

These grants focus on empowering people living under authoritarian regimes through Bitcoin education, conferences, decentralized mining efforts, and improved financial privacy for human rights organizations... Read more here.
i was really glad they used bitcoin to donate to different causes but it made me pause and wonder why had they used bitcoin specifically? well almost all the projects they donated to have something to do with bitcoin, technology, digital wallet, encryption, decentralization and education

This award is is part of their Bitcoin Development Fund grants. So it would look weird if they choose to send fiat or altcoin rather than Bitcoin.

their donation of bitcoin i am sure has gotten a lot of attention even from those who are not really aware of bitcoin/crypto yet so i am glad that organization like this is contributing to many causes while also promoting bitcoin

That would be great. Although from quick search, website which report this awards mostly are cryptocurrency website, followed by website about technology.

I don't mind such feature if there's option to enable/disable it permanently. But how do you determine top 10 major cryptocurrency? By marketcap?

I'm not familiar with HRF, but it's good to see them make donation to all kinds of projects. One of receiver already confirm they received the donation on https://harbor.cash. Your opinion is greatly appreciated.

Decentralized Exchanges (DEX) / Re: Where and how can you find new coins?
« on: September 19, 2024, 12:21:42 PM »
Where and how can you find new coins before they go to the exchange?

There are many websites and community which list or share information of new coins. But if you just the list and basic information, both CMC and CoinGecko have page which list newly listed coin on,

What criteria should you use to choose coins to buy?

It's hard to discover which new coin will end success (whether in terms or price or real usage). But it's worth to mention most of those coin would die or fade quickly.

Aside from common security practice, i would never share wallet private key/recovery words with multiple persons just to save some TX fee. I've seen some people claim they do such thing when they got caught operating multiple account.

Those 3 usually refer to same thing. But FYI, some of those actually is spyware where they collect and sell your data. Here's an example, https://www.tomsguide.com/news/avast-avg-data-collection

This is the first time I've heard of people sharing their private keys just to save on TX fees. Yes, I may have not mentioned it, but sharing these is a big no-no. Thanks for this link. Gives us something to think about.

TX fees isn't the only reason, but few people actually do or seriously consider that. Here are some examples for curious reader,

Other Popular Cryptos / Coins / Re: Is web3 just a short time buzz?
« on: September 18, 2024, 01:01:52 PM »
Mostly yes, since many web3 project isn't really decentralized or improve user's privacy. Some people even mocking Web3 by creating this website https://www.web3isgoinggreat.com/, although it also include coin/project which doesn't use "Web3" term.

Bitcoin Mining / Re: Large hash shift to btc fractal what does it mean
« on: September 18, 2024, 12:34:21 PM »
Nicehash picked up even m ore hashrate.
So a lot of money is being spent on this coin.
Somebody is hyping this lately, I don't understand where the pockets to keep this overpaid hahsrate, the money printing from the coins, the hoard of tweets likes and posts about it is coming from, and the coin has actually gained in $, no dump yet.
I would say a large pool is behind this but taking this many risks?

Looking at all time statistic on "Permissionless Mining" section from https://explorer.unisat.io/fractal-mainnet/mining, i doubt it's the case. There are 4 pool with hashrate ranging from 3.565EH/s (15.03%) to 7.313EH/s (30.84%).

What is the role of SIM swapping in such attacks? I thought that criminals monitor the individual's activity on social media or ask about him and after knowing that he has Bitcoin, his house is broken into.

This part of the full news state it's another type of crime those criminal did, in order to steal crypto. I didn't find statement which says SIM swap is a part to invade victim's home.

Quote from: https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/twelve-defendants-sentenced-violent-home-invasion-robberies-steal-cryptocurrency
According to court documents and evidence presented at the trial, Remy Ra St Felix, 25, of West Palm Beach, and his co-conspirators stole over $3.5 million from victims through SIM swapping and violent home invasions in which they held victims at gunpoint, assaulted them, and bound them with plastic cable ties.

Note the bold is added by me.

I appreciate effort of those politician, but i doubt single letter would change mind of SEC chair. A petition could be more effective in this case.

I am not really aware that American citizens are having a hard time and many maybe chose not to participate in airdrops because of the possibility of violating the security laws of the country.

But in practice, the one who worry about that is the project team who wish to launch airdrop. SEC wouldn't bother go after individual.

While not all airdrops are worth it, all people should be free to receive anything especially for free or under some conditions which mostly don't cost money.

I agree. Although some airdrop these days require identify verification (where they claim to prevent abuse/multiple claim) or tasks which take lots of time.

Software wallets are internet based and only require a private key or security phrase to access them.

It's generally true that software wallet are internet based, but FYI there are few software wallet which can be used on offline/airgapped device.
