At the time of writing, Bitcoin’s market capitalization sits at roughly $170 billion. Whether this figure strikes you as either high or low will depend largely on your historical perspective. When we consider that Bitcoin’s market capitalization was barely $42,000 in July 2010, its current figure seems staggering. While Bitcoin remains by far the most highly valued player in the cryptocurrency space, others such as Ethereum, Ripple and Litecoin are catching up.

We can now ask the question, what other characteristics set Bitcoin and Litecoin apart?

Its a fair point that they are catching up i just don't know that they will ever get as close as they are now.  I just don't see things like Ripple or Ethereum as good at what they do as what bitcoin does.... bitcoin has stood the test of time.

Yes! I think Bitcoin is the major player since it's inception, and being the first coin, its actually the driving force of all crypto till now. I also believe that ETH, Litecoin, Dash, monero etc has great things to offer as far as the markets are concerned and these coins could change the ladder as per the top coinmarketcap ranking in near future.

Bitcoin runs the market because it has a high level of its capitalization. However, this level is declining. If at first it had 94 percent, then with the years it fell to 32 and only recently it rose again to 50 percent. I think that bitcoin will continue to lose its level of capitalization, and it's probably not the drawbacks of bitcoin, which it really has, but in the development stages of the crypto-currency market. One coin can not long dominate the price ratio over other types of crypto currency, because they also develop. The time will come when the level of bitcoin capitalization will drop to the level of capitalization of the upper coins and then it will lose its price dominance and each coin and token will gain its own free pricing. This is inevitable in any case.

It is true that ethereum, ripple, and litecoin market capitalization have increased at a faster rate so it's fair to say they are "catching up".

it's better to take from the top 1-100 ranking in coinmarketcap to invest it will bring us into big profits. even though the price is falling a lot now

bitcoin even though it is experiencing a price decline, but its market capitalization is really high, it is undeniable that number 1 in the market rank is not easy, and other coins try to steal the rank.
but if you look again, when the BTC price has decreased, the other coin markets also follow, this indicates that BTC is very strong and irreplaceable, because the altcoin has a dependency on BTC.
