In my opinion now the best time for investing altcoins mate. Because you know we saw a huge bear market in last months and i as you can see market start recovery stage.
I think eth can not be go lower than 170 dollar again. There is no way for that. We can see some sideways movement surely but after now i believe we will see bullrun. Maybe in 2 months maybe in 1 year i dont know about the exact time but i know that is good time for investing.

Don't worry too much, relieve yourself of the stress you have. You are not alone we are all just almost the same. I did lose from holding an altcoin, but this does not actually mean this is the end of all. Will just have to wait and maybe things will be better if the market is well again. Be always positive though it will only cost you bad decisions and actions that maybe inappropriate thus causing even much greater loss. Just try to set a stop loss to keep you from losing too much.

For your question, most of the altcoins are garbage and not at all worth investing. They have a lifetime of a year or so. 95% is shit. So, choosing a coin that is worth investing is altogether a big task. But if done wisely, there is huge ROI waiting for you in a year or so.
