Ethereum Foundation Weighs $15 Million Bid to Build ‘Randomness’ Tech

At the cutting edge of blockchain research is a potential $15 million dollar venture by the Ethereum Foundation centered around a technology called Verifiable Delay Functions (VDFs).

Acting as a source of computer-generated randomness that is unpredictable and unbias-able, VDFs are envisioned for use in a highly-anticipated “proof-of-stake”(PoS) system called Serenity which the ethereum network will migrate to in the next few years.

What’s more, the ability to generate secure randomized numbers – if implemented in Serenity – would be a feature that can be leveraged by all decentralized applications (dapps) on the platform once integrated into the ethereum codebase.

Speaking to current viability studies on VDF technology, Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake told CoinDesk:
“We’re basically doing all this groundwork to make an informed go, no-go decision on the bigger project. The bigger project is 15 million dollars on that order of magnitude. So we want to make sure that if we do go ahead it’s going to be successful.”

While governments and banks in some countries are trying to hamper the development of cryptocurrency-related businesses, other locations are cashing in on the investments and new jobs that the industry brings. The latest example of this is the establishment of bitcoin ATM manufacturer Lamassu in Switzerland.
Lamassu, the well-known cryptocurrency ATM manufacturer, which assembles its machines in Portugal, announced on Jan. 1 that after years of searching for a home, it is now officially Lamassu Industries AG of Lucerne, Switzerland. The reason given for choosing the Alpine country is a more welcoming environment for crypto-related businesses, in contrast to other locations where the company struggled to maintain a bank account, leaving it bankless for the past year.

Huobi Global has announced the launch of a beta version of the cryptocurrency derivatives trading platform Huobi DM.

It offers users to open short and long positions, earning income due to the volatility of cryptocurrency prices. Weekly, fortnightly and quarterly contracts are available on the platform.

The nominal value of one Bitcoin derivative on the exchange is $ 100, for other contracts it is $ 10. Huobi DM also offers a leverage of 5x, 10x or 20x.

BitMEX has launched a venture-capital unit to identify potential crypto firms to invest in.

The new branch is led by Kumar Dandapani, global head of BitMEX Ventures, who graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and joined the firm in 2018. Previously, Dandapani was a partner at Nth-Degree Analytics, a quant research, and development firm.

Maxim Wheatley is head of venture development who has joined the company in September. He previously worked at TTEC, a technology firm based in Colorado.
Already, one of its portfolio companies has announced BitMEX as a backer.

Blockfolio, which announced a $11.5M Series A financing round in October, noted BitMEX as an investor. BitMEX was also set to participate in a fundraising round for FRST, a cryptocurrency data technology company.

Coinbase’s approach to educating the masses on the cryptocurrency is simple and straightforward. The Bundle offered by the exchange contains all five cryptocurrencies listed on the exchange, namely, Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, Ethereum, and Ethereum Classic.

The users can decide on how much cryptocurrencies they wish to hold. The exchange will calculate a “diversified portfolio of available cryptocurrencies,” depending on the current market cap at the time the user places an order.

Interestingly, the Bundles start at $25 and gives users the chance to own grouped cryptocurrencies as per their discretion. Following the purchase of the bundle, the assets in question are distributed in their respective wallets and behave similarly to independent tokens in a user’s digital wallet. Monero developers have patched the ‘Burning Bug’
The developers of open-source cryptocurrency Monero (XMR) have patched a bug that could allow an attacker to “burn” the funds of an organization’s wallet while only losing network transaction fees, according to an announcement published September 25.
The bug was reportedly discovered after a community member described a hypothetical attack on the XMR subreddit. The bug could purportedly affect merchants and organizations in the XMR ecosystem, enabling an attacker to trigger significant damage. How do you think about it?

Bithumb, a global cryptocurrency exchange will offer overseas users an event to payback 70% of transaction fees as an expression of appreciation for their support and loyalty.

Bithumb is planning to hold a ‘Cryptocurrency Transaction Fee payback promotion’ for overseas users from September 20 to October 21, 2018 (GMT +9) Korean Standard Time. The event is for the overseas users who have completed transactions over KRW 1 Billion (Approx. USD 890,000, Bithumb cash standard) and are to expecting to get payback 70% for the transaction fees incurred within this period.
