This seems to be the process for projects to add their own token to MEW. If you want to add a token that you have purchased to make it visible within the wallet, the instructions will normally be available on the specific tokens website, but the general pattern is as follows.
1. Open My Ether Wallet page and click on 'Add custom token' - on right hand side under Token Balances
2. Input token contract address - copy paste from company documents
3. Input token symbol
4. Input number of decimals the token has
5. Click save
Now just click on 'Show all tokens' and you should see your token balance.

Thanks for the information. That was really helpful. I'll try to use that method when adding a token next time. I've always done it through the website though.
