After today’s breakout, bitcoin (BTC) now needs to move above crucial resistance near $5,200 to solidify the case for a longer-term bull market.

The world’s largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization crossed the last bearish lower high of $4,236 (Dec. 24 high) at 04:30 UTC Tuesday and jumped to $5,080 – the highest level since Nov. 19 – confirming a transition from a bear to a bull market.

The rally to a 4.5-month high was accompanied by a surge in 24-hour trading volumes to above $15 billion – the highest since mid-January 2018, according to CoinMarketCap. The bullish reversal, therefore, looks sustainable.

Further, the spike witnessed today has reinforced the positive trend change signaled by both the weekly moving average convergence divergence (MACD) and the money flow index a few weeks ago.

While the path of least resistance is now to the higher side, the bulls now face taking out the former support-turned-resistance of the 21-month exponential moving average (EMA), currently lined up at $5,200.

The persistent defense of that average support in the five months to October 2018 had triggered hopes of a strong bullish move. More importantly, a convincing break below that technical line on Nov. 14 invited strong selling pressure.

So the bulls need to force a convincing break above the 21-month EMA before claiming a complete victory over the bears.

As of writing, bitcoin is changing hands at $4,800 on Bitstamp, representing a 15 percent gain on a 24-hour basis.

Other major cryptocurrencies like ethereum’s ETH token, XRP and EOS are up at least 5 percent each. Meanwhile, names like litecoin, cardano and monero are flashing double-digit gains.

As seen above, BTC’s move above $4,236 has activated twin bullish cues: A bullish higher high and a triangle breakout, both confirming a bearish-to-bullish trend change.

The 5- and 10-week moving averages (MAs) are also trending north, indicating a bullish setup, while the relative strength index (RSI) is probing the former support-turned-resistance of 53.70. A break higher would further strengthen the bullish case.

Monthly chart


BTC came close to testing the 21-month MA, currently at $5,200, earlier today. A monthly close above that average would solidify the bullish reversal and encourage further buying, possibly leading to a move above $6,000.

A break above the 21-month EMA, however, may remain elusive for a few weeks, as the cryptocurrency is looking overbought on shorter duration charts.

On the daily chart, the 14-day RSI is at 86.00 – the highest level since December 2017.

The overbought reading would gain credence if the cryptocurrency creates bullish exhaustion patterns (e.g. doji, bearish engulfing, or inverted bearish hammer candles) in the next few days.

In that case, prices could fall back to $4,400 (Nov. 29 high) and consolidate for a period.

Ripple Price Analysis
This past week, we saw a solid upward move above the $0.3100 resistance in ripple price against the US Dollar. The XRP/USD pair even broke the $0.3150 resistance and settled well above the 100 hourly simple moving average. The price traded as high as $0.3168 and later it started a downside correction. Sellers pushed the price below the $0.3120 and $0.3100 levels. However, the price found a strong support near the $0.3070 level and the 100 hourly simple moving average.

A swing low was formed at $0.3070 and recently the price climbed higher once again. It broke the 23.6% Fib retracement level of the last decline from the $0.3168 high to $0.3070 low. Moreover, there was a break above a key bearish trend line with resistance at $0.3080 on the hourly chart of the XRP/USD pair. The pair is now trading nicely above the $0.3080 level and the 100 hourly SMA. On the upside, an immediate resistance is near the $0.3120 level.

Besides, the 50% Fib retracement level of the last decline from the $0.3168 high to $0.3070 low is also near $0.3120. Therefore, the price might struggle to clear the $0.3120 resistance area. If bulls succeed in gaining strength above the $0.3120 resistance, the price could retest the $0.3150 resistance. Any further gains will most likely increase the chances of a move towards the $0.3200 barrier.



Looking at the chart, ripple price is trading nicely above the $0.3070 support and the 100 hourly SMA. Should sellers clear the $0.3070 support, there could be a downside extension. The next key support is near the $0.3030 level, where buyers are likely to emerge. Therefore, the $0.3070 support holds the key for more gains above the $0.3100 and $0.3120 resistance levels in the near term.

Technical Indicators
Hourly MACD – The MACD for XRP/USD is gaining pace in the bullish zone.

Hourly RSI (Relative Strength Index) – The RSI for XRP/USD is currently well above the 50 level, with a positive bias.

Major Support Levels – $0.3080, $0.3070 and $0.3030.

Major Resistance Levels – $0.3100, $0.3120 and $0.3150

These last two days have been interesting for Bitcoin as the price went from $4,060 to $4,275, in a matter of hours. However, it didn’t take long for BTC to drop down back to $4,095 level either. Currently, it is sitting at $4,109 with 24-hours gains of 0.32 percent, as per Coinmarketcap data.

Back-to-Back Green Months for Bitcoin
It was only in February that Bitcoin started making its way upwards, starting from $3,450 Now after registering a green February, Bitcoin has made a win in yet another month.

As Mati Greenspan, a senior analyst at eToro wrote, “Bitcoin is at its highest level in more than a month this morning, currently testing resistance around $4,200 per coin.” Though as he noted some analysts see the long-trend bear trend line to be broken, what’s more important is the “200-day moving average that draws ever nearer.”

According to crypto analyst and trader, Magic Poop Cannon, Bitcoin has surpassed the 150 MA but from here he is expecting the price to only chop sideways “unless $4,200-$4,400” area is surpassed.




He further points out that the fact that price went upwards breaking the massive resistance level, “the probability that Bitcoin will move sideways or higher, is now technically greater than the probability that we will see lower lows in the market.”

If $4,200-$4,400 range is broken, we will have a “more” bullish outlook but additional resistance remains overhead which means failure to move past this means sideways movement for Bitcoin.

Sideways is boring for BTC price but for altcoins, it is the time to get pumped and register significant gains.

Currently, among the top cryptos Binance Coin is up over 4 percent while Dash and VeChain are up about 7 percent. Today’s top gainer is Elastos with 28 percent gains followed by Tezos and Storj with over 17 percent greens.

Don’t Hold Your Breath for Bitcoin ETF, At Least till Later this Year
Meanwhile, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has delayed its decision on Bitcoin to May. This came after the leaked interview of the SEC Commissioner that believed the regulators will approve the proposal.

Bitcoin ETF that will provide a new investment option for market participants including institutional investors is expected to bring increased liquidity in the BTC market.

However, it is not happening in the first half of this year as Jake Chervinsky, a securities litigation lawyer at Kobre & Kim shared that the SEC “almost certainly” will postpone the ETF proposals again with the final deadline for approval or disapproval to be set in October 2019.

A South Korean regulator has slapped two cryptocurrency exchanges with fines after ruling that they had violated data and privacy laws. Moreover, one exchange was fined for over-complicating the process for customers to close their accounts.

Media outlet Consumerwide reports that the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) – South Korea’s answer to America’s Federal Communications Commission – conducted checks on a total of five domestic exchanges from July to September last year, and discovered that OKCoin’s Korean branch and Coinlink had violated privacy and data laws.

The KCC also hit OKCoin Korea with a second fine of the same amount, ruling that the company had over-complicated the process for customers to close their accounts – signing up for an account was found to be relatively easy, while closing an account required a number of complex steps.

The KCC found that OKCoin Korea had broken privacy regulations by failing to maintain mandatory data logs. South Korean law requires that financial companies compile and retain data logs, tracking when customers log in to their accounts. The companies must retain this information for a period of six months, and conduct regular, monthly checks on data to ensure it has not been compromised. The KCC also found the Coinlink exchange guilty of similar violations – and handed both companies fines of around USD 6,300. A number of banks were also found to have fallen foul of the same offences.

However, the regulator stated it was satisfied with the privacy policies of rival exchanges GoPax, KBlockchain and Coinnest.

Meanwhile, another South Korean exchange, CoinZest, has been attempting to boost its public image after an embarrassing airdrop-gone-wrong earlier this month. Senior CoinZest executives, including the company’s CEO, held an anti-phishing workshop with Seoul police. Per ZDNet Korea, CoinZest shared information on how exchanges fight voice phishing or hacking attempts and how they use Know-Your-Customer (KYC) policies. Police investigators also explained their protocol for responding to exchange-related incidents.

This week, the “Big Four” exchanges in the country – Bithumb, Upbit, Korbit and Coinone – also announced they have formed a mutual anti money-laundering network, comprising a “hotline” whereby the exchanges share real-time information about suspicious activity. Newsis reports that the group will seek to involve other traders in its alliance.

Also earlier this week, the Bank of Korea (BOK), the nation’s central bank, said that issuing a digital fiat was “not necessary in the immediate future,” although it did not rule out reconsidering its stance at a later date. The BOK issued a report stating that digital fiats were more suitable for “nations like Sweden,” per Money Today, but stated that cash still plays a vital role in the South Korean economy – something that could be undermined should a digital fiat be adopted.

The BOK has been advised to consider issuing a digital fiat by leading economic figures, including officials at the Korea Institute of Finance.
