UN experts investigate 58 cyberattacks worth $3 bln by North Korea

Quote
UNITED NATIONS, Feb 7 (Reuters) - United Nations sanctions monitors are investigating dozens of suspected cyberattacks by North Korea that raked in $3 billion to help it further develop its nuclear weapons program, according to excerpts of an unpublished U.N. report reviewed by Reuters.
"The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) continued to flout Security Council sanctions," a panel of independent sanctions monitors reported to a Security Council committee, using North Korea's formal name.

https://www.reuters.com/technology/cybersecurity/un-experts-investigate-58-cyberattacks-worth-3-bln-by-north-korea-2024-02-08/

I think we are all aware that North Korea have been involved in a lot of hackings in the last couple of years. Just wondering though why would the UN just by now, would investigate it when there are proved that indeed Lazarus group and its sub umbrella within inside the country are all over the world of crypto and taking on projects, exchanges and looking at loopholes and then stealing everyone.

And what do you think the effects of the sanction?

For me? None obviously, and there economic sanctions are not going to be effective if they continue to their hacking and have billions of dollars at their disposal.

What are your thoughts on this?

North Korea and its leader live in another world, isolated from our world. They think that they are outside the laws of the United Nations and the international community, so I do not think that the sanctions will affect them.

Sanctions have been imposed on North Korea for a long time by the United States and the United Nations, but the Korean President does not care about all of this and continues his policy of photographing weapons of mass destruction.

I think that the Korean Lazarus Group has the personal support of the Korean President, and they do not care about all the sanctions that will be imposed on them, and they will also continue to hack all Crypto services whenever they have the opportunity.

Yeah, already late. My guess is that the UN investigators will also use the methodology of other organization/departments that did it first but I think they still want to have an independent report. They are supposed to be free from influence right?

I think we are all aware that North Korea have been involved in a lot of hackings in the last couple of years.

I'm only aware that some people who evidently lied that some country has weapons of mass destruction and therefore invaded it have been constructing a story for years about how the world's most powerful hackers come from a country where the internet practically does not exist.

If you don't have solid evidence for something, then all you have to do is keep repeating the same story and blame North Korea for every hack.

The UN is one of the most incompetent organizations that has ever existed and its existence is just a show for the public. In an effort to justify their existence, they deal with things where they can't even scratch the surface, let alone something more - but they have to deal with something, right?

Hacking is not something they could prevent, even if they develop something further and bigger, then they would find another more developed way to hack. The only thing that could stop people would be offline, cold storage ways, why do you think that no nation has ever hacked into another nations nukes and blew it up? Because its mainly manual, sure there are some coding and electronics involved, but you can't activate and blow it up without manual input as well. We should try to slow this down of course, but UN will not be able to stop it all together, that's just not possible, it will happen, maybe a bit less now but still going to happen.

Additional sanctions against NoKor can proved to be futile as this hermit country is already sanctioned a lot yet it can still do business in many ways than one being supported by China, Russia and allies. These days, the country has proven its mettle to be effective and is topping the scale for hacking especially with crypto-related platforms as success in there can be so lucrative. Indeed, hacking has now become a multi-billion dollar enterprise and for North Korea the steadfast desire for cash pushes them to be good on what they are doing: exploiting possible weaknesses in crypto exchanges where if breach can be successful means they can be rewarded greatly. No wonder why hacking will continue to be on the news...certainly the latest hack will not be the last, there will be more coming. I am waiting to see what can be the recommendations of UN to at least minimize this problem.

There are rumors that North Korea is using the money obtained through hackers to finance its nuclear weapons program. I do not doubt that we will be hearing about hacking for many years to come. They will continue to commit cybercrimes, just as they continue to test nuclear weapons and launch ballistic missiles, and no one will be able to stop them. The only thing the UN can do is investigate these attacks and try to show us that the UN is a good cop. The UN is one of the most ineffective institutions in the world. Due to its political structure, it does whatever its 5 permanent members say.

Yeah, and the more they put sanctions on North Korea, the more they find a way to circumvent it thru other means like hacking crypto exchange. And we can say that it's not that effective anymore as they continue to exist make money and God who knows what they are going to do with millions or billions of hack money, buying a nuclear weapon from any rouge country like them.

So yeah, hacking will continue to exists as long as there are exchanges that still have weak security.

North Korean and it's Lazarus group is very much intelligent, maybe 24x7 the hackers are looking and learning and evolving. So very dangerous for crypto exchange or individuals that involved in crypto as they could be a target.

Most of the investigations from the un and also the u.s. points to North Korea, as being responsible for numerous hacks on crypto institutions, however North Korea has denied these allegations. We know that North Korea is the closest thing to a dictatorial nation and most of what goes on in there is not known by the outside world, however is there sufficient proof by the un or even the u.s. that NK is responsible for these hacks as they say?

1) Because bureaucracy!
2) Because UN is slow as hell even when comparing it with its peers.
3) Because the UN doesn't care about the hacking and the ransomware, they would only act if there is proof that funds are used to bypass sanctions imposed by the UN, if (theoretically) they would have used all those funds to buy steaks and sushi the UN wouldn't have cared at all.
