Would you invest in BTC or MicroStrategy MSTR?
« on: March 16, 2024, 02:21:58 AM »
BTC Spot ETF is having a huge impact on BTC price, it is even said to be the reason why BTC has created a new ATH before Halving - something that has never happened in the past. Besides, Michael Saylor's MicroStrategy company is also extremely famous for its BTC accumulation strategy and is racing against BlackRock in terms of the amount of BTC held [1, 2]. We can say that Saylor is the most famous diamond hands in the global crypto community at this time, even more famous than the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele.

Saylor has previously made clear the differences between investing in MicroStrategy's MSTR stock and a BTC Spot ETF, and of course Saylor points out the advantages of MSTR that a BTC Spot ETF cannot have [3]. We still have one more question: between MSTR, a stock with most of its value backed by the number of BTC held in reserve, and BTC itself, which is the better investment?

  • In terms of profit: Since MicroStrategy started investing in BTC in August 2020, MSTR has increased by more than 1220%, while BTC has only increased by about 500%. Thus, the data shows that investing in MSTR generates more profit than investing in BTC, because MicroStrategy allows investors to leverage their investment with debt, which allows MicroStrategy to amplify its gains from BTC's price appreciation.

  • In terms of credibility: Some people believe that MicroStrategy is more credible than Bitcoin because MicroStrategy is a company with a proven track record. Therefore, investors in MicroStrategy are not just investing in BTC, they are also investing in the expertise and experience of MicroStrategy's management team [4]. I disagree with this view. The Bitcoin network is decentralized and has existed for more than a decade. It is not dependent on any individual, organization, or government. I trust the Bitcoin network more than a public company.

So, even though MSTR could generate higher returns, I will still continue to self-custody my BTC instead of investing in MicroStrategy's MSTR and then putting my faith in Michael Saylor's decisions. And even though Michael Saylor has asserted that MicroStrategy will never sell BTC [5], I think the question is only "when" and not "if".

I would like to know your views on investing in BTC and MSTR:
  • Do you choose to invest in BTC or MSTR? Why?
  • Will MSTR continue to generate better returns than BTC?
  • Is an investment in MSTR safer than an investment in BTC?

1. Why can't I pick both? Personally prefer diversifying my investment but there are others that would prefer the profit advantage it has over Bitcoin or the security, privacy and control Bitcoin has over it. Well even if am holding both my MSTR is gonna be short to mid term and with relatively lower invested funds since am still biased against centralized corporations after FTX liquidation.

2.It would, but diminishing returns will certainly creep in at a point in time. Not a mention it's volatility. Now imagine the rate it would have fell during FTX drama.

3.No. Recall the higher the risk,  the higher the returns and vice versa. Btc has a relatively lower risk hence the return.  I believe wealth in my hands or my control is safer than one held for me by another. Many might argue that it has a track record but history has shown that big firm still fall due to various reasons.

I see this as a business strategy.  Michael Saylor is a wise and smart business man. He understands what it means to flow with the business trend and he is also using that principles to push his business forward. Before he got involved in Bitcoin, was his company and his name that popular as it is now? But after getting involved and accumulating of Bitcoin his business started recording huge activities and a rise in profit. You see why I am not surprised. He is using his involvement in Bitcoin to make profit from his own business which is a smart move from him and you know Bitcoin and crypto enthusiast are all out for who ever supports Bitcoin existence.

He knew that and is taking advantage of it to get involved in bitcoin while working out good principles that would favour his business inline with Bitcoin existence. So I am not surprised if he is making profit as a result of his involvement in Bitcoin and it is natural that humans would always want to make more profit from their business and in other to achieve this, they would have to go extra miles in engagement with what ever trends in the society to rendering good services.

We shouldn't make things complicated in our end? I mean if we have been in Bitcoin for many years, definitely it is what I'm going to as I'm more familiar with it. However, for experience investors who have been in stocks, then MSTR could also be a good options for them. So it's a win-win situation for investors as Microstrategy and Saylor himself is very good at promoting Bitcoin and his company is doing good because of his investment, so what can go wrong? But still though, risk is also there and so we need to be also careful on where to put our hard earn money.

The differences you are trying to depict will be excellent for anyone who wants:

 - Investing in Bitcoin as an investment asset, not purchasing Bitcoin.
 - Has access to invest in debt.
 - Wants to reduce taxes or fee costs.

the trade-off between MicroStrategy and the BTC Spot ETF varies depending on the investors, the nature of exposure to Bitcoin, and the factors above. In other words, MSTR will have a market share after the Spot ETF, but it will definitely not achieve profits as if it were in the past.

1. Do you choose to invest in BTC or MSTR? Why?
2. Will MSTR continue to generate better returns than BTC?
3. Is an investment in MSTR safer than an investment in BTC?
1. I do choose to invest in Bitcoin rather than MSTR because I am not into ETF's and also traditional exchanges.
2. I think for now it will but I don't know in the long run as it is still in an early stage.
3. For me no I still prefer Bitcoin because I have a full control of it and I am a fan of decentralized investment especially here on the internet. I don't really care to invest in Stocks, ETF's and others it's not friendly for us below middle class here in my country even if it is I still choose Bitcoin as it is proven and tested.

Regardless of the data that favors higher profits when it comes to MS shares, I would always choose to invest directly in Bitcoin rather than in a company that invests in Bitcoin. Investing directly in Bitcoin allows us to be our own bank, and for me personally that has a much greater meaning than profit.

Also, any company is always exposed to the risks that it may begin to achieve bad results, that its CEO may experience an accident or decide to sell the company - which consequently always has an impact on the price of the company's shares.

Therefore, I think that investing in Bitcoin indirectly is not at all safer than direct investment, but as we can see, it can be more profitable. For someone who likes to diversify his investments, I don't see why he wouldn't have some stocks in his portfolio, especially those related to Bitcoin.

I would like to know your views on investing in BTC and MSTR:
  • Do you choose to invest in BTC or MSTR? Why?
  • Will MSTR continue to generate better returns than BTC?
  • Is an investment in MSTR safer than an investment in BTC?

- I've never been into stocks, so I don't have much idea about them, how they move, how volatile they are, etc. So I would invest in Bitcoin because of this reason as a first.

- Again, as I don't know much about stock market, I'm not really sure, but I don't think that MSTR is going to generate better returns than Bitcoin in the long run because we have seen the growth level of Bitcoin and that is probably unmatched so far and the growth of MSTR is a short-term growth, probably.

- All I can say is that I trust Bitcoin more because I'm not sure whether MSTR will be able to sustain its growth in the long run or not, any bad news about the company and you will see a decline in its price for sure, and at the end of the day, it's a centralized entity.

I do not think that you will invest in MSTR in the long term, but the average investment period is between 3 years and 5 years, and at the present time you will sell it at the end of the bear market and invest the profits by buying more Bitcoin. Therefore, for a person has the ability to access more than one asset and instead of buying altcoins, buy shares of these bitcoin proxy compaines may be a good option.

I prefer to eat directly with the king, rather than the prince. Bitcoin is king, and I dine and wine with the king, than the prince, because the king gives the prince money. It is from bitcoin that MicroStrategy made so much money. Which means his bitcoin investment is what will pay you your profit in investing in MSTR. This is why I will prefer to be the boss on my own like Michael Saylor, by investing directly on bitcoin and not with a third party. Bitcoin is best to be invested directly on and hodli for a very long time. It is only when the price goes to zero that it becomes a problem which the probability of the price going up is far higher than going down. Be your bank, and be in charge of your investment, third parties are not reliable.

I want to invest in Bitcoin I don't want to invest in MicroStrategy MSTR. Because there is Bitcoin ETF and I got a lot of success investing here. I know nothing about MicroStrategy MSTR but know a lot about Bitcoin. As I don't know about MicroStrategy MSTR so don't know if MicroStrategy MSTR can generate better returns than BTC but I know about Bitcoin Bitcoin can generate very good returns and make a person rich very fast. I know about bitcoin bitcoin is very safe for me I don't know about MicroStrategy MSTR  may not be very safe for me.  Here I give my own opinion.

Do you choose to invest in BTC or MSTR? Why?
If I invest in bitcoin, I have full control of my investment. If I invest in MSTR, I do not have full control of my investment. I will prefer to invest in bitcoin.

Will MSTR continue to generate better returns than BTC?
Who cares. Bitcoin is safer for me because I have the complete control and no one on earth can compromise my bitcoin wallet.

Although I admire MicroStrategy and its CEO Michael Saylor's policy towards Bitcoin, he has embraced it from the beginning and seems to be a strong believer in Bitcoin.

Even though MSTR shares rose significantly after the significant rise in Bitcoin, I prefer owning Bitcoin instead of MSTR shares, for the simple reason that I do not believe in centralization.

Despite everything we mentioned about MicroStrategy, it is still a centralized company and I prefer owning Bitcoin in my wallet because in the end no one guarantees that MicroStrategy will sell Bitcoin if it obtains sufficient profits or is exposed to financial pressure.

Op MicroStrategy [MSTR] is a centralized company that also invest in bitcoin and Bitcoin is a decentralized digital currency which one can use to buy and sell and also invest in it. So if I am to invest in MicroStrategy company then I am to work for him and not to invest for myself unless I am a shareholder of the company. Therefore if it is for investment then I will invest in bitcoin and not in MicroStrategy (MSTR).

I agree with you. Bitcoin is decentralized, which makes it safer, and easy to access. But MicroStrategy is centralized and anything can happen to the company tomorrow. If it happens that I should invest in a centralized way on bitcoin, I will prefer the ETF than MicroStrategy.
