Look at the effects of cars on the environment, but aside from a few emissions laws, which helped but not enough, we still drive cars, and in some areas pollution from cars is massive.  I think renewable energy is the key for mining, it only costs a little bit more, and while significantly higher for consumer, it should be affordable for mining.
