Can I hold my altcoin for years in my wallet?

You can leave your tokens in your wallet for more than a year, If the project does not die out, then you can leave it till the end of the world. Chances of its increase depend on the success of the project.

You can hold your alts in your ETH wallet for as long as you want but the problem starts if the project moves to their own blockchain or any other non-ETH infrastructure. In this case you have to claim your tokens in a swap so if you "forget" about them, your old tokens could become useless.

Not having gas is not really a valid reason to leave coins in your wallet long term. No harm in holding long term, but don't do it blindly. Keep an eye on the price fluctuations and make your decisions accordingly. Like someone has already mentioned, not every project will survive, so if you get an opportunity to take profit, don't dismiss it immediately. As the old saying goes, 'A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush'.
