Google has warned some senators and Senate aides that their personal Google accounts have been targets of attempted hacks backed by foreign governments, the company confirmed on Thursday.

Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., wrote to Senate leaders on Wednesday that his office has discovered a number of senators and Senate staff members were warned by a major technology company "that their personal email accounts were targeted by foreign government hackers."

A Google spokesman confirmed to NPR that the company showed the warnings, which typically say: "There's a chance this is a false alarm, but we believe we detected government-backed attackers trying to steal your password."
In a 2017 blog post describing these warnings, a Google threat analysis executive wrote that "the notice does not necessarily mean that the account has been compromised" but that "a government-backed attacker has likely attempted to access the user's account or computer through phishing or malware, for example."

Spokesmen for Wyden and Google declined to clarify when these hacking attempts against personal accounts of Senate officials took place.

In his letter, Wyden raised concerns that the Senate security office does not help ensure the security of U.S. officials' personal accounts.

"The 2016 election made it clear that foreign government, including Russia are leveraging cyberspace to target the fundamental pillars of American democracy," Wyden wrote, adding: "Our adversaries do not limit their cyber attacks to election infrastructure or eve to official government accounts and devices; they are also targeting U.S. officials' personal devices and accounts."
He wrote that the Senate Sergeant at Arms "refused to help" senators and staff members who had received Google's warnings and informed those who had requested help "that it may not offer cybersecurity assistance for personal accounts."

The office of the U.S. Senate Sergeant at Arms did not comment on Wyden's concerns, but issued a statement:

"The SAA, as the custodian of US Senate data, follows industry best practices to provide state of the art Cybersecurity defenses against malicious attacks. We take this protection very seriously with appliance protection on the network and assisting staff with best practice education seminars. We do not, however, comment on the active defense of our system, the protections we have in place and how we protect our devices."

Wyden's letter says the Sergeant at Arms believes it can only use its budget to protect official government devices and accounts. Wyden says he plans to introduce a bill to change that "on an opt-in basis."

Last week, hackers stole an estimated $59 million from a Japanese cryptocurrency exchange called Zaif, according to a statement released Thursday by the owners of the exchange.

According to Cointelegraph, the Tech Bureau Corp. said the breach occurred on September 14. The company discovered something was wrong on September 17, and realized it was a hack the following day, September 18.

Zaif lost 5,966 Bitcoins, currently valued at more than $6,000 each, as well as some Monacoin and Bitcoin Cash, the amount of which Tech Bureau is currently investigating, according to the released statement.
Tech Bureau said it will sell a majority of its shares to another financial services corporation in Japan, as reported by CCN. That sale is supposed to provide over $40 million to be used to replace the funds stolen from customers.

Cryptocurrency exchanges are similar to a stock exchange or currency exchange that might be found at a bank or airport, except that users are trading decentralized digital currencies.
Cryptocurrencies are designed to be hard or impossible to manipulate, but the exchanges themselves are still very much at risk of hacks.

In 2014, the one-time largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world, Japan-based Mt. Gox, declared bankruptcy after losing $473 million in a hacking attack.

Shortly after the popular cryptocurrency Bitcoin peaked in value in December 2017 at just under $20,000 per bitcoin, Japanese cryptocurrency exchange Coincheck reported losing 500 million in various crypto coins to hackers. That equated to a loss estimated to be more than $400 million.
"Virtual currency exchanges have suffered at least five major hacks this year, one reason why professional money managers have largely steered clear of the market even as individual investors piled in," Fortune reported Thursday.

Is US banking giant Morgan Stanley planning to offer Bitcoin trading? Bloomberg seems to think so.

In a report published September 13, Bloomberg cited anonymous sources, revealing that Morgan Stanley was planning to offer Bitcoin trade swaps.

The sources told Bloomberg that the US bank planned on following in the footsteps of other firms pursuing Bitcoin and cryptocurrency exposure options.

Morgan Stanley, Wall Street, And Bitcoin
Morgan Stanley is already technically prepared to offer Bitcoin swap trading, with the bank launching the service once there is a proven institutional demand, and after completing an internal approval process, one source explains. Morgan Stanley declined to comment on the news.

Some of the largest banks on Wall Street are moving forward with plans to offer derivatives tied to digital assets, despite the downturn the cryptocurrency market is currently experiencing. Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Citigroup Inc. are both preparing investment products tied to Bitcoin as well.

Morgan StanleyMorgan Stanley will not be trading in Bitcoin directly, with its swaps tied to Bitcoin futures contracts, the source said. The bank’s CEO, James Gorman, had stated earlier this year that the bank would not allow customers to buy and sell cryptocurrencies directly through Morgan Stanley, but instead would create a trading desk to help support derivatives tied to cryptocurrencies.

The bank has already made moves to prepare for Bitcoin trading, hiring Andrew Peel as their head of digital asset markets from Credit Suisse Group AG in June of 2018. Peel, who is based in Zurich, Switzerland, will report to Niall Dowling, the global head of equities trading of Morgan Stanley.

Meanwhile, Citigroup is developing a system for trading cryptocurrencies known as digital asset receipts, and Goldman Sachs is looking into Bitcoin derivatives called non-deliverable forwards. Goldman Sachs is also reportedly considering offering custodial services for cryptocurrency funds.
