If you asked why ICO choose Ethereum platform, because ERC20 is the most popular platform
But for now several projects migrated to BSC and Matic.
Because ERC20 gas fee is so high.

Op wrote this thread at 2018, Ethereum is so popular, it's the reason why many ICOs choose Ethereum.
But for now there are several alternate s.art contract platform that more lower gas fee than Ethereum.
Binance smart chain, polkadot, Matic etc.
