After reading all the wiki articles I started diving into the news sites to get a non technical overview of what was happening and some more comprehensive guides. For the technical perspective the Germany talks at the CCC conferences helped me.

Etherium has already founds its place with Smart Contracts and acting as a network, Monero is trying to be an anonymous currency (and I hope they succeed) so they are rather complimenting each other instead of being able to replace each other.

Apart from the undisclosed reffereal links, yes those websites work as they just run a Java (or similar) scrip in your browser to mine XMR. Having said that if you really want to mine this is absolutely inefficient, get a miner and connect to a pool instead.

Mining through your website visitors is mostly done by sites like coinhive, but they are not well liked, especially when you do not tell your users. Pool-Mining using a browser adin instead of a real miner seems inefficient to me.
