Title: Altcoinstalks Uptime Website Status
Post by: PX-Z on April 06, 2024, 12:40:25 AM
Just like i made in BTT (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5491705.msg63904375#msg63904375), i do also an uptime status page of this forum. This is to check when this forum got a downtime, either minimal or long downtime.

The Current status will show if the website is Up (Operational) or down (Downtime) with green and red indicators.

Quote
This works on accessing the forum website for 1 minute interval and capture response time and status code in every visit.
Status code >=200 && <300 is good while >=300 && <=511 is bad which always considered as downtime error.

It will record and show the last 60 days of uptime status of the website in desktop mode and 30 days in mobile mode.

Thank you, creative as usual

I expect that the green color indicates a good response time, and the red color indicates a good response time, correct? This means we have different response times depending on timing.

As I see it, the forum's response time is bad, exceeding 5000-10000ms, but what are the reasons that make the response time bad or long? Also, what solutions can be provided to avoid this situation and improve response time?

Yes, the red color it means that there is a downtime happen on that day, you can click or hover the red line to check what date and how many mins (only estimate) it has downtime.
And yes, since this monitoring feature only access the website in 1 minute interval so it wont know what will happen on the rest of the minute, there might some downtime or uptime that monitoring bot cannot notice. Only if the downtime is not that long (less than a minute), but if it is the otherwise, it will be monitored and recorded.

As I see it, the forum's response time is bad, exceeding 5000-10000ms, but what are the reasons that make the response time bad or long? Also, what solutions can be provided to avoid this situation and improve response time?
Longer response time doesn't mean always bad, the status green or red is based on the status code (200+, 300+, 400+, 500+) when accessing the website on the specific time.

For improvements, the faster and stronger server will always do the job especially if there are many users of the website.

I think a simpler interface would be useful, where there is a happy face indicating that the service is running, and a sad face indicating that the service is not running, with a Recent Downtime Activity table containing the dates and period of the Downtime.

With the way the development you introducing here, I wouldn't be surprised when I see something similar to ninjastics. Good job.

Edit : Just checked your website, and found out it has karma log. Would it be possible in adding a feature to know how many karma was received in a month or 3 like BTT?  This I believe can help campaign managers in reviewing applications for a campaign.
with a Recent Downtime Activity table containing the dates and period of the Downtime.
A table would really help in making contrast between various times easy.
Response time as of writing is currently low. Guess individuals online are really few, according to the home page less than 40 users are currently online with almost 3000 guest.

Yes, i created something like that too that is open for anyone to use for any website but the difference is the downtime activity is only when someone searches it on the platform, and not scheduled checking.

On this monitoring page, the Current status of the site will show Operational or Downtime. I just put other details.

I will add some additional features on this like sorting dates soon to check past downtime.

I really did received +3 karma, what i know it's only possible to send +-1 karma, is this one of the perks of being the President?

It's great that you add more features, it will be even more useful than it already is.

Yes, the President can send more than 1 karma, and yes, you have received 3.

The work you do with the tools you are creating is worth those karmas and more.

Your words are correct, only the administrator and the president can send more than 1 karma. No other group or moderator can do that.

I gave you +3 karma because your dedication to making useful tools for the forum is constant, you always solve users' doubts and you are active in the forum.

You're most welcome man! Yes, I had an issue sending a merit to your thread and that's why I created that thread so I can know better that why I was unable to send merits to the thread. That thread helped me to find that why I was unable merit your thread and I'm happy that it helped your thread to get more visibility to the member who appreciate such threads/tools!

Thanks for another Great tool PX-Z. Altcoinstalks get down more frequently than the other forums, probably because of the recent activity spike. I didn't know that you had created the same tool for Bitcointalk as well. I just checked the tool and it reminded me of TryNinja's website where the page shows the downtime of his posts and merit scrappers.

I was already using that tool to check the status of Bitcointalk's website. Now this one is a good addition and this is the first one for Altcoinstalks users. Good luck for more and I hope you will continue running your services.

Yes, based on the recorded logs, at least the downtime is 1-2 minutes only, and the weird part is it has almost the same hours of downtime on 9 AM forum time. I guess this is just a server scheduled downtime, or something, or i don't know.

Good luck for more and I hope you will continue running your services.
Yes as i found a cheaper vps for hosting so it will not be too much for me to maintain it and its more faster than the previous one i used ;D

Another Nice tools, Anyway, your website has been bookmarked, and now I don't have to search separately to check the status of bitcointalk or altcoinstalks forum ;D. Thanks for your free services.
I know it sounds stupid but I still don't know what the main explanation for these status bars is? If I'm wondering if this is the status of the website for the last 60 days. Am I correct?

Those are to be filled yet, i just run the monitoring page few days ago, so it will be filled day by day until 60 days and so on.

It's hostvds shared by LoyceV on the other forum (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5434679.0) and yes, they accept crypto as payments. It is said that this is a small vps service that runs frequent problems but since the site is just experimental and doesn't need huge resources than the plan offers so i'm good.

Probably it is the scheduled downtime from the hosting provider. I am unsure if it's the forum's server or if they rent it somewhere. I feel the admin must upgrade the forum hosting soon if he wants the forum to run smoothly. I have faced several issues during my browsing time.

Actually the cost isn't the main thing. A person needs dedication and enough interest to run a website. A website needs to be updated from time to time to run it. If you lose interest at some point and abandon the website just like Vod, I hope you will transfer it to a safe hand.

Actually the admin upgraded the server just recently, the forum was better than before, and the recorded downtime is just so minimal that it doesn't affect the current state of the forum.

I run and manage many websites actually, not only this, and as long as i'm active here or in the bitcointalk forum i'll keep the site and its tools. And yes i can easily give it to anyone to manage the site if ever i don't have enough time here and become busy somewhere else :)

Another great looking project for altcointstalks community, and it can be very useful for everyone.
However, I am not sure that 1 or 2 minute forum downtime should be recorded, it can also be taxing on your server, and maybe wrongly detected as spam rom forum security.
I would increase this time interval check to minimum 5 minutes, and I would not go below 3 minutes for anything, or we are going to see red lines al lthe time ;)

You're right about the all red bars.

Or maybe still record the downtime even 1 minute but the bar color will only change if it's >=5 mins downtime. Usually the server security record is different from downtime. Status code usually is 400 - 403 if it's security related and 500 status code for downtime.

It is but it's just super minimal.

Update:

Chart bar will only turn red if the downtime is 5 mins and above but it will still show the downtime in minutes if hovered, the same thing downtime records will be showed in the activity section.

I think this will work better, but let's see in what happens in next few days/weeks.
Just checked status page for altcoinstalks and magic happened with everything turning to green ;)
Now only thing we need is to have some kind of notification system when forum goes down.

have you ever thought about developing bees? this would be very helpful

Just download the UptimeRobot app from the App Store, or the Play Store, and create a new alarm whenever the HTTP connection to https://altcointalks.com returns something other than 200. It does the exact same thing as OP's utility, but it sends you push notifications in real time when it's up and down. (Let's hope that you are not addicted so much to ALTT to make use of it though :) )

I can't find the if this app is open source or not, so I guess it's probably not.
On their website they have some pricing tiers, so there are some limitations with free version.
Maybe there are some better open source alternative apps, but I like the idea for notifications when website is down.

Yes, this will be added on the telegram notifier (https://www.altcoinstalks.com/index.php?topic=315728.0). As for email notifications, i didnt configure email settings on the new hosting so i can't send mails yet bit it will be available soon.

There are also other free services, obviously but this is a service made by the community for the community and it is open source

if you remember on BTT we recently decided to use talkimg instead of other hosters since in the past they changed the rules of the game, why shouldn't this happen with an app that measures whether a service is online or not?

When you want to add an email notification feature, it might be a little troublesome because we need a configuration to always send emails for free and avoid spam activities in some email settings. Maybe using Telegram notifications is more efficient because there are no restrictions from certain email provider settings.

Telegram notifications are working better for me than email messages.
Do we have to enable any settings in Telegram AltcoinsTalks Notifier bot or this will be default notifications when forum is down?

Maybe a week or two, i have some personal project to be finished so i need to prioritize it as the email configuration may take time (i guess). About the email getting being on spam folder especially if not using google workspace (which is paid) is correct too.
While i can add it on telegram for few days.

Do we have to enable any settings in Telegram AltcoinsTalks Notifier bot or this will be default notifications when forum is down?
It's something i need to consider too, i guess i will add an option to enable and disable notifications too just like the btt supernotifier, this is for mentions, karma, and this uptime status.
