Will we really see an Ethereum ETF?
« on: April 06, 2024, 11:37:10 AM »
At the beginning of this year, the SEC approved the first bitcoin ETF spot, which led many to speculate that Ethereum is the next one and even some applications from Fidelity, Bitwise, and Grayscale, but what makes me doubt that this will happen soon is

  • The presence of ICO, NFT, and DeFi tokens on the Ethereum blockchain, and many of these tokens have been linked to fraud.
  • ETH staking, as there is an additional return from holding Ethereum.
  • Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating whether Ethereum should be classified as a security

I believe that all of these reasons are enough to delay the approval of the Ethereum ETF during this year. Do you think my fears are real?

You are right but the reasons aren't convincing enough. You made mention of ICO fraud and scams, Defi tokens and NFTs but what about Bitcoin, didn't fraud happen in Bitcoin? Didn't NFTs and ordinals NFTs were launch on Bitcoin as well, I just think that reason is not enough to deny them Ether ETF.

You maybe right and your reasons about stake ethereum. If you look at ethereum, it's too centralized for an assets that want to have an ETF, if anything should happen to those staked ETH, there is going to be high rate of market manipulation and it will affect people that bought ETF and that's what SEC don't want to see happen, compare it to Bitcoin, it's not like Bitcoin that's decentralized.

The SEC's stance on ETH Spot ETFs is currently unknown, but there is speculation that the SEC is investigating Ethereum and may want to charge ETH as a security. However, if the SEC does not approve ETH Spot ETFs, they will face major Wall Street firms in court and need to have a good enough reason to explain without losing the case like they did in the lawsuit with GrayScale regarding BTC Spot ETFs.

I think the only way the SEC can do this is to delay for a special reason, such as staking rewards on Ethereum. I don't think the SEC wants to charge ETH as a security to go head-to-head with the CFTC, which has classified ETH as a commodity. Anyway, we will have ETH Spot ETFs soon, this year or next!

With the recent developments happening with connection to this issue, I am making my own personal prediction of the high likelihood for SEC to delay the final approval of ETFs for Ethereum. Well, just like what they did with BTC before. There is an ongoing inquiry as to the basic question if ETH can be defined as a security or a commodity and until this is finally laid to rest then SEC may choose not to act yet on the pending applications even if many of them are considered to be powerful and influential. Plus, we know that 2024 is a big election year so there is more reason for SEC to stay on the status que...not unless of course there can be a court order for them to proceed smoothly with the approvals. I guess that 2025 can be the best year for ETH ETFs and this way BTC ETFs can enjoy the limelight the whole of 2024.

In my opinion, the ethereum ETF will be postponed because the SEC is still conducting studies on ethereum coin. Maybe one of the factors why the ETF is pending is because the supply of ethereum is too large, in contrast to bitcoin which is limited. And it wasn't easy for the SEC to approve it.

Of course, there are concerns that ETH Spot ETFs will not be approved for many reasons, perhaps the most important of which is that the SEC is looking into classifying Ethereum as a security.

Today I was reading an article on the same topic. In an interview with CNBC on April 9, the CEO of investment firm VanEck says that the SEC is unlikely to approve ETH Spot ETFs. Likewise, the CEO of CoinShares, Jean-Marie Mugnitti, is similarly pessimistic the same thing.

In my opinion, even if there is pessimism and approval seems difficult at the present time, it will come in the end, because large companies including (Grayscale), (BlackRock), and (Fidelity) want to enter and will press with all their might to obtain approval.

It is plausible to have that kind of reasoning with having ETH ETF be more successfully reviewed with the following. It's probably more into getting the approval of the SEC and to show to the people that it's worth being approved or something.

I guess it's time to get more ETH.

There is still debate and it is still not approved. The solution is that this can be done in 2024, as is the case with Bitcoin, the hope is that it will be approved. But is it possible?

It is still not known what its fate will be, whether it will be approved with several conditions or whether it will even be rejected. Let's just see next month, in May, because there are rumors about that. Even worse, there are rumors that it is very likely that the Ethereum ETF will be rejected and not approved. Yes, we'll see what the final result will be.

It's a matter of time, not today but in some time it will happen anyway. + in any case the big players will manipulate the price. As soon as the first news on this issue will appear, I will close all positions on ETH, so that in case of what - there would be no unpleasant situations.

P.S. In case of anything - don't get euphoric, cheating can happen everywhere. Absolutely no one is interested that we earn money. + most of the news may already be embedded in the price of the asset.  8)

Do you think my fears are real?

of course we will see them, they are already working to bring them up
but clearly the SEC cools the spirits but they will certainly see the light
in my opinion the various investment funds are trying to create the right timing to make the most of the current hype
I'm sorry to think this way but those are clever people ready to do anything to speculate

Re: Will we really see an Ethereum ETF?

I think the only valid reason for them to disapprove of ETH ETF is the security accusation, which is arguably weak and would make their judgment feel inconsistent if they suddenly said ETH is a security after years of quiet approval that they are not. Then again Bitcoin ETF has been delayed many times without any new reasoning so I'd not be surprised if they hinged on this angle and used it as a reason to postpone ETH ETF many times in the future. I'm curious if they approve this on a bear market, whether there will be a significant impact, or will ETH still follow BTC price action.

they cannot help but approve it, when the financial lobbies are behind it, in the end they will give in
because all the objections they may raise will find a way to resolve them
see with Bitcoin ETFs, they didn't want the signed methods at the beginning and asked to always switch to dollars, and they changed

and consequently ETF approved
Maybe it will take time, but it's inevitable

There is always a reason for the SEC to disapprove an Ethereum ETF, as you said security. Some also say the supply is too large. Let's see what tools the SEC will use. or maybe the SEC will approve an ethereum ETF, that would be a very good thing if it happened. because it seems like ethereum lovers are waiting for this, and this will be good news for all altcoins, because later there will be other altcoin ETFs

the SEC always has something to say, if you look at the odyssey for the approval of Bitcoin ETFs you realize that I'm right about that
they are nice guys from this point of view, but unfortunately they decide and we can't do anything
they had the senate call them back, just to understand

This is the problem, if Ethereum is accepted into the ETF then there is a possibility that other altcoins will enter the ETF, of course this will pose a greater risk because altcoins have a very high risk and altcoins have price movements depending on the project being developed, if The ETF has accepted altcoins and after that the project developed in this altcoin collapsed, which will make the SEC pay for the decisions they made and of course this is very detrimental for them.
