Title: Can Cryptocurrencies Be Used As A Medium Of Exchange In Our Daily Transactions?.
Post by: Tribalchief on March 21, 2024, 05:04:20 PM
Introduction
The world of business involves exchanges, which means there is a generally acceptable medium that allows buyers and sellers to come to an agreement. Money happens to be a keyword in the world of business due to its value, worth, and how it's generally accepted. Over the years, money has evolved and undergone several transformations just to meet the portability and durability purposes of every user. Coins and banknotes are the common forms of money in our world today, though other things give a similar presentation.

After searching the internet, I just couldn't find a proper word that describes what money truly defines. Of course, it's a generally acceptable means of payment, but why is money a general means of payment? I asked myself this. The reason why money acts as a generally acceptable means of payment is because money appears to be a general language that is understandable by those living in a certain region.

Ideally, we all expect the majority of those who are born in the US to understand the English language and also be able to communicate with it. The same thing goes for those in Spain; they should be able to understand Spanish and communicate with it. This puts money in a similar situation; it is generally accepted because everyone understands its value and should be able to communicate with it through exchange and transactions.

With money acting as a generally acceptable language for transactions, it has its own limitations. Those in the US make general use of the US dollar because the majority of the people understand it a lot. This has caused limitations to the usage of other forms of money like the Euros, Pounds, Ruble, etc. Citizens of America would find some of those currencies strange because they are not their common form of language for transactions.

Cryptocurrency
Just as the world keeps evolving technologically, we are beginning to see its great impact in the finance sector. Cryptocurrency, which is digital money, happens to be a new form of money that uses encryption technology. With the usage of Blockchain technology, cryptocurrencies are represented in virtual forms rather than physical fiats such as coins and banknotes. Cryptocurrencies already offer more than portability and durability, making them safer to secure.

An interesting fact about cryptocurrency is that it breaks the language barrier of normal fiat currencies, making it act as a general language acceptable in every part of the world. Cryptocurrencies such as BTC, ETH, Sol, etc., are all presented in the same form in every country but are measured relatively with the traditional fiats of every individual country.

Because cryptocurrency breaks the language barrier of normal fiats, it makes it a better form of money than every other traditional fiat. Interestingly, cryptocurrency can be sent from any part of the world just like teleportation, as long as both users have the necessary software that can run crypto protocols, which is a crypto wallet.

We've been able to identify why cryptocurrencies can be used as a medium of exchange, but we need to consider a major key in achieving such a theory. A major key necessary in achieving such a theory is Mass Adoption. There are certain conditions necessary for mass adoption, but would be introduced in the topic number 76: "What challenges do cryptocurrencies face in achieving mainstream adoption?".

So back to the question: Can Cryptocurrencies Be Used As A Medium Of Exchange In Our Daily Transactions?. The answer is YES.

Please note, I suggest that the conditions necessary for mass adoption be introduced in topic number 76, as they fit better within that topic.

Thanks for reading, and do well to share your opinion.

The one thing I so much cherish about crypto currency is the fact that we are our own bank. Cryptocurrency does not require a third party such as the bank to keep your assets safe but rather you have control over your assets and nobody knows anything about your assets. You can move from one place to another with your assets being mobile with you. Your assets privacy is guaranteed without any security threat.

Finally, in terms of transactions, there is nothing like middle man commission or bank charges with exorbitant fee charges, nobody is there to ask silly questions on what you used your money for just as the bank do ask before granting loans. There are lots to many to talk about.  Let me just end it all up here with this, " Bitcoin is the freedom of the account."

The use of crypto in daily micropayments has been mentioned for a long time, perhaps since the birth of BTC, but it has not yet become popular for many reasons. Perhaps only the people of El Salvador are experiencing this feature fully thanks to the new policy and technology of Lightning Network.

In other countries, legal issues still prevent the widespread adoption of crypto. For example, in Vietnam, using crypto instead of fiat in payments is considered illegal and can lead to very severe penalties. The government wants to protect the position and value of fiat in the economy, and they are not ready to experiment with crypto.

People's awareness is also a barrier. We live in this market so we feel crypto is important, but others don't care about crypto and don't think it's important. For them, fiat is enough, and if fiat depreciates, they have gold as a reliable reserve asset.

Isn't that the major reason why we have cryptocurrency...to act as the medium of exchange in a peer-to-peer fashion? Within more than a decade of its existence though we still have to see that vision come true in a massive way because even if Bitcoin is quite so popular already it is more of an investment vehicle or to make more money rather than act like the money which can be use to buy a candy, a soft drink or a condom in a convenience store. So what are the things hindering that big vision to come true, in the first place. One is the scalability problem. Two is the extreme volatility where a coin can go up and down anytime of the day. Three is the fact that people are speculating so they would rather store their coin in their wallet and wait for it to go x10 or x100 so they can be rich. And I belong to the last category though my BTC is not that big, actually.

I think people forgetting that daily transactions aren't just the small ones.
There are many big daily or weekly transactions which are already done with cryptocurrency.  Larger transactions,  with more money. Specially for remittances or as a store of value.

I don't think that buying coffee with crypto is that important.

I think when you said cryptocurrency you meant Bitcoin, the major reason it was created is for decentralization for individual to be their own bank removing the need of a central body. I think OP is talking about cryptocurrency and unlike Bitcoin there are coins that ain't having scalabilty issue or that volatile, Stable coins like USDT are examples of such among others.  Answering OP question, Cryptocurrency is already been used and can be used as a medium of exchange but the market that accept it are few. There are individuals in this forum and others including BTT that accept cryptos for their service or goods and not to mention places while few that allows the purchase of merchandise using certain cryptocurrency. Though it's not yet widely accepted like traditional currency, it can still play a role as a medium of exchange.

Perhaps a big myth has been created that Bitcoin is generally accepted in that country, but even as a legal tender it has very little use in the general population. An ordinary person who has no knowledge about Bitcoin will prefer to perform their transactions using USD, which has been the official currency in that country for over 20 years.

Those who live in Turkey and Thailand have the same problem, but p2p transactions are something that goes beyond such prohibitions, because Bitcoin is "designed" in such a way that anyone can transfer a certain value without seeking the consent of a third party. Of course, no one is comfortable doing such transactions if they know they live in a country where it is prohibited by law, but if a law is meaningless, I will always try to find a way to circumvent it.

It can but it will take years to make it work considering that most persons are ignorant of the workings of cryptocurrencies. I can remember the difficulties faced in my country when there was shortage of money supply. During this period exchange of good was not easy because some sellers don't even have functional bank account and it posed a challenge for buyers. For cryptocurrencies to be used as a medium of exchange the sensitisation have to start now so that upcoming generations can easily be abreast with the workings of the crypto world.

These are all some key points I must mention. There is this satisfactory feeling that people experience when they are the only ones who have access to something without the influence of others. The absence of middlemen can indeed provide comfort, but it also has its own disadvantages, as there won't be anyone to complain to if anything goes wrong during the transaction process.

Of course, I understand that perspective. When we consider it from your angle, you are attempting to reference specific individuals within the ATT and BTT communities. However, what about those who reside outside these two communities? With a world population of approximately 8 billion, the question becomes: What percentage of the world uses cryptocurrency in their daily transactions, and what percentage does not? Mass adoption undoubtedly takes time, but it is not exclusive to certain demographics.

I think people forgetting that daily transactions aren't just the small ones.
There are many big daily or weekly transactions which are already done with cryptocurrency.  Larger transactions,  with more money. Specially for remittances or as a store of value.

I don't think that buying coffee with crypto is that important.

Whether large transactions, small transactions, or medium transactions, the primary aim is to achieve mass adoption, thereby creating global awareness

People's awareness is indeed a very vital point, and its absence would certainly be a problem for mass adoption. Please permit the writer of topic 76 to add this as a key point that affects mainstream adoption.

people don't know about crypto, I think it is no longer foreign to society because technological developments have spread and many people already know. The problem is whether the government is ready with regulations to be able to accept it as a legal means of payment, usually only as a trading tool. This is, of course, a separate problem.
But because the movement of crypto is very fast, and it seems very difficult to use it as a medium for daily transactions, no one dares to speculate that when they receive it the price drops, will certainly be detrimental to the recipient.
The best thing is to exchange it for a legal medium of exchange and then use it for transactions.

Of course its a yes, the question is not "can", its "should". Because at this point, people who are using cards, could very well easily use crypto cards as well. We need more regulations regards to that, but if exchanges can hold tens of billions of dollars, they may as well just give us debit cards too. Like if I have Binance account with a million dollars in it, the logic should not be hard to get a debit card from them and go around spending that money. Hell, they can even partner with visa and mastercard, meaning the seller do not have to accept crypto, I can pay in crypto and they could get it in fiat. Its not something we "can" do at this point, its what we should evolve to already, we are even a bit late to it.

Even fiat money has it's own digital form, no wonder Cryptocurrency will have more demand because of some merchants in the market accepts crypto as payment method. I know soon it will more popular in the future and can even match with the fiat transactions we have right now. The question is will the goverment allow such transactions?  :)

It's not just mass adoption that is required for cryptocurrencies to become medium of exchanges in the world outside the internet. What do you consider being mass adoption? We already have a large part of the world buying, holding, and using cryptocurrencies, and now we have industrial investors hoping in as well. I think that can also be considered a sort of mass adoption even though it's incomplete.

What I believe can be the biggest barrier is the unpredictability of network fees of certain cryptocurrencies at times. Take Bitcoin as an example. There are times when the network gets congested and transaction fees touch the sky. What do you think would people do in such situations when they are spending Bitcoin on a daily basis if they are not willing to switch to another cryptocurrency?

Basically, this can be done using certain cryptocurrencies as a means of daily payment. It's available. However, there are several problems:

1. Regarding regulations
There are certain countries that do not allow cryptocurrency to be used as a means of payment, and if you violate it, it will be restricted and you will be punished. So that means we should not use cryptocurrency for transactions.

2. Still limited
In this case, it is related to the mass adoption of cryptocurrencies in society which is not yet that widespread. There are many levels of society who do not understand or have not accepted cryptocurrencies for various reasons. So, it is still difficult to implement crypto for payments. If you want to use it and it is allowed, it is only limited to people who already know and follow cryptocurrencies. So, this adoption must continue to be disseminated.

crypto is only suitable for large transactions, not for small transactions, for example: for cooking women who buy vegetables with crypto

And I suppose this is where cryptocurrencies come into play. They are of different types but offer similar goals. I understand that volatility can be a massive problem, especially during bull markets when most of these coins tend to perform poorly. However, I also believe there could be a specific type of coin that can overcome this barrier for small, medium, and large transactions.

To me, the coins that can break this barrier are less volatile and are called stable coin. We have several stablecoins, with USDT being one of the most popular in the crypto space. If crypto adopters were to convert the more volatile coins to the less volatile stablecoins, don't you think we could still adopt crypto for smaller transaction purposes?

These are the possible conditions that could happen.

1. Fees are higher than on the goods or services been that dealt of with
2. Not all would really be knowledgeable about crypto
3. Fiat is always preferred no matter what

Its true that it does have its pros but we cant really be able to deny if we do speak about into its cons or hassle
when making into those day to day transactions that we do. There's some good area that could be integrated but as for day
to day then i would say its better to stay put on where it is now.

Yes for sure, cryptocurrencies can sure be used for our daily transactions, it's very possible and easy to do, though I see problems with bitcoin fulfilling this purpose without issues due to its mempool that is usually congested and often leads to really high fees, imagine buying something of $2 worth and having to pay up to $4 dollars in fees, and even at this, you still might have to wait for up to 30 minutes or more before the first transaction confirmation arrives, meanwhile some business will tell you that if your bitcoin payment does not get up to 2 or 3 blockchain confirmations, you aren't permitted to leave.

But generally, cryptocurrencies can indeed be used for our daily transactions on goods and services, but first, this can not happen without world wide adoption first, everybody will have to come to the knowledge of cryptocurrencies and how they work, learn how to set it up, and also learn how to manage and keep their received crypto payments safe from hackers, and also, how to reinvest the crypto they recieved in the business, all this needs to happen before we can really come to that stage when we can say that cryptocurrencies a few ripe adopted well enough to be used for daily transactions for goods and services.

But isn't it will go against the fundamental principle of crypto or at least Bitcoin that has been developed as a P2P. The problem is that is it not yet widespread used except in El Salvador. But I'm just imagining that in the market even the vendors have their mobile phone and crypto wallet installed and uses LN for faster transaction. However, it's only one country or even some in European that accepts Bitcoin and LN is coffee shop to proved that Bitcoin can be use as P2P. Hopefully, if there will be global adoption of Bitcoin and crypto, it will be a different story overall.

You can use bitcoin lightning network even to buy something that is worth $1. Bitcoin and some other cryptocurrencies can be used for spending daily. But the problem is that they are not adopted up to the extent that they can compete with the fiat for spending daily. Also that will not be necessary because you can easily convert crypto to fiat and vise versa.

So back to the question: Can Cryptocurrencies Be Used As A Medium Of Exchange In Our Daily Transactions?. The answer is YES.
Imo, my answer also will be: YES.
But then, what kind of crypto that is used better for means of daily transaction? This will be another questions to answer. For, so far, there are numerous cryptocurrencies in this crypto space. Of course, the answer will be and should be Bitcoin. But, BTC also requires higher fees to transfer, that is why, common people, will be more interested in using fiat for the daily payment because commonly, there doesn't need any additional fee for  transaction, moreover daily transaction.

And this may be able to  apply in certain countries, in which the society is ready enough with technology. because, if it is for country like here in Indonesia, I don't think that all people in society will be ready, for many traditional markets here. Besides, this is also still illegal to use currency besides Rupiah in this country. So, this will be very difficult to apply it here.

I think that this can be implemented, but not massively directly. There still needs certain process and progress to make this world really ready with this.

So back to the question: Can Cryptocurrencies Be Used As A Medium Of Exchange In Our Daily Transactions?. The answer is YES.

Yes it can be, but not generally for everyone, because till death, there are some people that will not use crypto currency. Would you agree with me that their are some people that are so archaic that they don't even use the traditional banking system to save their money? Such people would not even want to use crypto. Only the lovers of crypto would prefere to use Bitcoin and other acceptable coins as a means of exchange.
So, it is very possible that some people are using Bitcoin and crypto for their daily transaction. I do accept Bitcoin payment in my business, but customers don't pay in crypto all the time.

Bitcoin hodlers will be reluctant to spend their bitcoins in paying for a bar of soap in a supermarket, but when there is a large purchase, there can be more willingness to use bitcoins for payment if that option is available. Bitcoins was created for use as a currency but I don't think it was corrected for use in petty transactions.

Fiat will always be in use because of the ease, bitcoins and other cryptocurrency can be easier for transactions involving people who are far apart, but for physical transactions, the fastest remains fiat.

This is the reason why you are advised to properly do your verification exercise, due diligence before investing or conducting any transaction. Confirming your wallet address is very important both receivers address and even your own wallet address when conducting transactions as it saves a lot more especially when it happens you are sending to a third-party example crypto exchange or even your own wallet sometimes might be bugged that your wallet address changes whenever you input your wallet address, it might change to hackers address without your knowledge. That is why it is advisable to do a proper check before you carry out any transaction.

I understand that doing all these transactions gives that feelings of self belonging which is normal and as such makes one be more conversant with transactions and other activities involved in the Crypto space.

Overall it is possible, but the government and infrastructure that are not yet ready make it a bit hampered in its mass adoption. I think there are many DeFi platforms that want to realize this program, where cryptocurrency can be used like FIAT to buy food or drinks at restaurants...

We know that not all modern development grows equally, so in some areas we still see the adoption of blockchain technology and cryptocurrency still not showing the best results.

Yeah since Lightning Network was already been used in some local wallets here in our country I think it is way more convenient to use crypto than fiat but the only problem is the support end user which is literally the people who use it on daily basis. I know most of them were not that ready to embrace this idea but yeah we do have a lot of crypto that can be used as a medium of exchange if ever possible.

I think using Bitcoin for daily payments is more difficult psychologically. Subconsciously we will experience discomfort. It is much easier to part with some stablecoins. Subconsciously we will associate this with ordinary expenses in fiat.In general, there is still a long way to go for everyday payments in cryptocurrency.

What kind of discomfort? If most shops and other places accept bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as a means of buying and selling, I will prefer to use cryptocurrencies for paying for goods and services. What you will like would be what another person will hate. Have you not noticed this from your friends or from people that have been closed with you before?

What I see here is that the majority of us in the crypto space can't afford to spend our Bitcoin on anything, but we find it easier to spend altcoins and maybe stable coins. The reason is that we understand how well Bitcoin can perform, especially during periods like this where the ETF approval has turned things around for some weeks. There is literally nothing strange, just the HODL phrase that has become part of us.

Additionally, the main context was literally about cryptocurrency in general, not just Bitcoin alone. If the majority of us find it strange to use Bitcoin, which shouldn't be the case due to the future profit at stake, then altcoins and stable coins should be alternatives. The essence of all this is to promote the use of digital currency (cryptocurrency) to continue the evolution of money in the finance sector, and also give financial freedom to so many.

As long as there is an internet and those who believe and HODL Cryptocurrency and the government of countries allow it, it can be made as a medium of exchange and it need not be Bitcoin alone.
In my experience I just traded Tron and Sol to pay one fiend for a service rendered to me, we should not be confined to one Cryptocurrency, because as we all know there are times that one chain is congested so we need other coins/tokens to transact.

For us to have a wide adoption and for many people to transact using Cryptocurrency we should have more choices of coins/tokens to transact.

You are right, but as mentioned by others earlier, there are a lot of barriers for cryptocurrencies to become mainstream mediums of exchange, the very first and most prominent reason is that most governments are not ready to accept this and they can't allow cryptocurrencies to prevail and become common among the populations because if that happens, most people will start using cryptocurrencies for their payments because it's easier and way more convenient and on top of that, not control by a central authority.

You will not receive a phone call asking you several questions and asking you to visit them tomorrow for you to complete a transaction if you are trying to make a large transaction which is what would happen with fiat.

Right from the day Bitcoin wallet was release, Bitcoin was initially a peer to peer assets for making payments and help unbank people that doesn't have banks and this solution is the reason why many alts were later created after many years but what most of them truly exist for is now different from what it was intentionally built for, even Bitcoin can't be conviniently used for daily transaction because the fees are expensive to be use for daily transaction, even the altcoins are not different from this as well because what's on earth is meme coins even doing here in the first place, they are just for pumps and dumbs and not for making transactions.

Initially, before bitcoin started experiencing high transaction fee due to the ordinals attack on the blockchain, a lot of people are using it to pay for services, and the purchase of goods. In my country I ha e seen supermarket, shop malls and hotels that accept bitcoin payment. People are still using bitcoin for payment in their businesses, because it is more convenient and easy to use for payment across boarders. It is only the small business people that transaction fee will be a barrier to them. We are also being paid on this forum with bitcoin, those in signature campaigns.

Discomfort because many people perceive Bitcoin as a means of accumulation or savings, but not as a means of payment. And I separately highlighted Bitcoin and other altcoins separately for good reason. You perceive altcoins and stables as a separate type of fiat money. The fact that there are no friends’ tastes and colors is already understandable, everyone has their own preferences. As for stores that accept payments in crypto, I’d rather pay with regular fiat, it’s easier and faster.

As you have mentioned, everyone has their own preferences, if they consider Bitcoin as future savings or something else then it shouldn't be a problem for you, what they choose is their decision, not yours, let it be they choose their own beliefs and paths, you don't need to take care of them. For transactions in shops, cryptocurrency is sometimes ONLY used as an alternative payment if we don't have cash with us.
