South Korea Launches Investigation Into Worldcoin's Data Collection Practices

The government of South Korea has opened an investigation into Worldcoin, the iris scanning cryptocurrency and digital wallet project. It's not surprising this false privacy coin finally got investigated. Although for developed country like South Korea, IMO it's rather slow when Spain just ban world coin. I expect South Korea government would either ban it or give big fine to it's developers.

According to the article, not only South Korea opened the investigation, but also many countries such as Argentina, Hong Kong, and France:

South Korea is the last of many governments that have ordered investigative procedures against Worldcoin due to its intrusive personal data collection activities. Argentina, Kenya, Hong Kong, France, and Bavaria have exerted similar actions to ascertain compliance of the company’s data collection and processing practices with local laws.

However, it was not proven from the article whether there are actually charges against the company or whether they are merely investigations into the company’s activities that collect information. I also do not know if there are no lawsuits from anyone against the company, can the government take any legal action against it?

Maybe they can only ban the coins, or if they want to give punishment, they could work together to track and put the owner in jail. For example, they can work together and ask the US to jail the owner if the project also collects data illegally from US citizens. They can also try to destroy any backup of the blockchain data, although that is meaningless if there is sufficient decentralization in the data distribution. I do hope they manage to stop any private data from being exposed even further, although no one should willingly give their biometrics data to some random projects.

On the other hand, do they judge the data collection as being too intrusive because of the iris scan only, or is there something else? What makes this different from apps requesting KYC from their users? Simply because the government has no monitor about it, hence why think it is dangerous?

Countries where Woldcoin is operating have done the right thing, this is a good initiative it will stop other platforms that gather sensitive information among their supporters in exchange for their tokens that the developers will have value in the future.

It's not only Worldcoin other projects ask for their users' sensitive information without a guarantee of how they will handle this information.
One of these is the PI network where you need to do an extensive KYC before you can claim the coin that you mine in your cellphone.

We would see what would come out of this investigation, but for now South Korea are yet to take any action against World coin, but i am sure they would if the investigation proves that World Coin is using customers data in a wrong way. Kyc has always been dangerous and many times the platform does not do as they say with the data, from the article World Coin claims that the image resulting from the scan of the iris of each customer is deleted after the verification process, but we cannot know how true that is.
