Does Legalizing Gambling Affect the Reputation of a Country?
« on: March 13, 2024, 04:11:20 PM »
Not all countries legalized gambling. I researched to find out why some of those countries except religion prohibit gambling and then I found out that some countries once allowed gambling but later made it illegal due to the increase of gambling-related crimes and addiction, the government had to make legislation against gambling to protect citizens from involving in gambling-related crimes like the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Also, in South Africa gambling was considered illegal but was later considered legal.

I think that countries where gambling is illegal see countries where gambling is legal in a negative light and this can affect the reputation of the country. Gambling is legalized in my country and there is no sensitization from the government against problem gambling. If gambling is legalized in your country, do you think it is affecting the reputation of your country in the global arena? Is your government doing anything to prevent problem gambling?

To some extent legalizing gambling in my country as affected its badly, now gambling by law was meant for people from the age of 18 years and above, even children below 18 years go to bet shop and bet and the people know that they have below 18 years and they accept the money from them, and it make children to steal their parents money because of gambling,so to me gambling have a negative effect to the country, that's my opinion.

If there is evidence of underage gamblers then such gamblers should be reprimanded and then the betting shop should be locked up for promoting underage gambling.

governments will legalize just about anything illegal today in order to make money out of it. back when the president of my country wasn't very liked by US, they cut off the aid to support the country and so our president amend a law allowing small time lottery and offshore gaming services in the country to collect tax from them.

some countries that are struggling with money but the drugs are flooding the streets, they may legalize the market to benefit from it. i'm not sure if there is a country like this but Hemp are legal in few US states.

I believe that this is not the case, the reputation of a country cannot and should not be affected because they have games of chance and casinos, that falls within the scope of entertainment and adult enjoyment, I know that religions can prohibit it due to their criteria and their way of seeing things, I don't see it as bad that a country lowers its reputation because it has those businesses, because at the end of all it is business that the casinos represent, and it is adult entertainment, then it has nothing to do with it, There are countries that have their own beliefs and their way of seeing things, as long as illegal activities are not carried out, I believe that everything is normal.

If a country prohibits games, it is because they are based on religious or political reasons, but in the same way it is about the way they can play and enjoy, that is why online casino games are the best option for those people who live in those countries where they prohibit them.

It doesnt affect the reputation, there are places that turns out to be the center for entertainment like Las Vegas where tourism makes the city alive.

Abu Dhabi is in Middle east but I think after they made the city accomodating for tourist and allow gambling, the reputation of UAE weren't affected.

If gambling is legalized in your country, do you think it is affecting the reputation of your country in the global arena? Is your government doing anything to prevent problem gambling?

It may somewhat affect the reputation it depends on the kind of gambling your government is legalizing, betting in a lottery is very much legal in our country and the majority of the people here in our country are all betting and the advantage for our government is they get huge revenue from these betting platforms and the big revenues are using to sustain the health sector.

I felt like indecisive feels the best. A nation is not good or bad, or have a good or bad reputation, based on their gambling laws. I mean considering there are nations that bans it and a nation I would never visit, and there are nations that it is illegal and I would love to visit. Conversely I could say the same for the nations that made it legal, there are nations which gambling is legal and I would still never visit, and some that it is legal and I would love to visit. All of these calculations are here to show you that, a nation that has gambling as legal or illegal doesn't really change its course, BUT now that we establish that, would a decent nation I would probably not visit, not for disliking reasons but just I find it a good nation that has no touristic reason to go to, could make it legal and maybe then I could see that as good, who knows.

I see two ways how a legalized gambling will truly affect a country's reputation and those are weak policies/security against money washing/laundering and becoming a place for terrorist financing. If I remember correctly, countries are given some scores on how they combat the above international problem. The rating will affect their image and international trades. Other than that, each country won't really care.

I agree with you. The impact of legalizing gambling on a country’s reputation depends on the prevalence of gambling addiction, money laundering activities, and underage gambling. If these issues are so common in a country that it raises global concern then a country`s reputation can be harmed.

Here in my country illegal gambling is taking over in most places but what hurts us most is the POGO industry because some of them were involved in scam and even involved in kidnapping, human trafficking and violence. And what is alarming here is that it involves foreign nationals like Chinese, Vietnamese and Malaysians. It gaves headaches to authorities and maybe this will affect country's reputation if I am not mistaken.

From what I know, most of the illegal gambling sites in Southeast Asia and China are based in your country, and it is legal for them to operate from there.
With that way, income from these sites will be considered legal, they dont need to go to the trouble of laundering money as long as they comply with the regulations there and pay taxes.
I dont think a legal or illegal gambling will affect your country's reputation, but rather the crime rate.
And also I think the crime rate there is quite high due to drugs, not gambling.

Re: Does Legalizing Gambling Affect the Reputation of a Country?
« Reply #12 on: March 15, 2024, 11:34:49 PM »

Exactly. The betting shop owner should be arrested and his shop should be locked immediately for allowing minors to gamble because of money.

In my country, a minor(someone below 18years) can't try to gamble in front of his elders or be in their mix without been scared of who will spark at them to gamble when they are not up to. For them to have that free hands to gamble, they must be above 18 years. If they are below 18 years, and the gambling owner allowed such a thing to happen, let him expect their shop to be locked because someone must have reported them for such
