Ripple is a cryptocurrency that was first launched in 2012. Ripple is based on blockchain technology and works differently than other cryptocurrencies. Instead of being decentralized, like Bitcoin, Ripple is centralized. A company called Ripple controls the Ripple currency. This means that Ripple does not have a decentralized network; instead there is a central server. Ripple has its own transaction protocol and their own distributed ledgers.
