While they have done an admirable job introducing the world to the wonders of cryptocurrency, the Bitcoin and Ethereum networks suffer from a number of problems, including slow transaction speeds and very long confirmation times.

Stepping up to offer a ‘new way’ and a new blockchain is Hedera’s Hashgraph network, which is powered by its native $HBAR token.

The company is promising much faster transaction times of 10,000 transactions per second, three to five second confirmation time, and very low fees of around $0.0001 per transaction.

OKEx will be one of the first cryptocurrency exchanges to list Hedera’s $HBAR token.

Customers will be able to deposit $HBAR from September 16, and withdraw the token from September 24. OKEx will list the asset in three trading pairs initially: HBAR/BTC, HBAR/USDT and HBAR/USDK.

The token will be available on OKEx alongside a comprehensive range of digital assets, and alongside a large variety of services that the Malta-based exchange offers its customers, including spot trading, perpetual swap trading, and futures contracts.

Improving on the past

Billing itself as the ‘third generation public ledger’, Hedera uses the Hashgraph consensus algorithm. On its website the company says this means transactions are very fast, at around 10,000 per second and it says the network is highly secure.

Described on OKEx’s support pages Hedera is said to be unique in its offering:

“The hashgraph consensus algorithm is the only consensus protocol that achieves the highest level of security possible: ABFT (‘Asynchronous Byzantine Fault Tolerance”). ABFT means that the network achieves consensus finality even under real world network faults.”

The company aims to separate consensus from governance and is working to offer “diversified and distributed consensus”, which is agreed by tens of thousands of nodes.

“Hedera is separating consensus from governance and at scale expect to have the most diversified governance and most distributed consensus. Governance a council of Fortune 400 blue chip companies diversified by geography, sector and time – 1/3 leave every year. Consensus will be achieved by tens of thousands of nodes at scale.”

“Futures price reflects the market sentiment of the subject’s price. In the futures market, a different settlement time contract of the same token will differ. For example, at writing time, the mark price of BTC quarterly contract is USD 10,033.3, while that of the bi-weekly contract is USD 9,973.88,” the post says.

“To earn a guaranteed profit from calendar spread arbitrage, spread must fluctuate within the two positions the trader takes, which can be predicted from historical trading records.

“This way, you can guarantee a stable profit despite market volatile. The benefit of a futures spread is that the trader has taken two positions. This allows them to earn a guaranteed profit from the exercise of both positions.”

An easy way to get a solid ROI?

What it means is that the return on investment you can get depends on the spread of different contracts. To simplify the strategy, traders who are unfamiliar with the method can use long arbitrage when the market is on the up (in a bull cycle), and short arbitrage when it’s in a downturn (bear market cycle).

A spokesperson for OKEx, says calendar spread arbitrage gives customers another option in their trading approach and strategy and was another tool that could be used on its platform to help them generate a solid ROI.

However, despite the potential rewards from investing they were keen to highlight the risks involved with trading digital assets, and said that whether you were new to trading, or experienced, you should always ensure you have a risk management plan in place to limit any financial losses.

“However experienced you are to investing, you must always know when to exit a trade, and have a damage mitigation plan in place to reduce any financial losses,” the spokesperson said.

One of the world’s largest cryptocurrency futures trading platforms, BitMEX, is facing mounting pressure as charismatic CEO Hayes goes off the grid and rumors circulate its chief operating officer, Angelina Kwan, has quit – what’s next for the company?

Hired to much fanfare last November, Kwan represented a big acquisition for the trading platform. A veteran operator at Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission (SFC), where she spent eight years as director of enforcement and as a director of supervision of markets, she was hired by Hayes as BitMEX’s COO, to lead on the company’s collaboration efforts.

But after less than a year in the role rumors are abound that she has quit the company, as it faces a series of possible investigations into its operating practices.

US investigation?

Seen as a veteran of the Hong Kong regulatory and compliance environment, Hayes recruited Kwan to help lead the exchange’s efforts to work with watchdogs globally to develop rules and regulations and to help the wider cryptocurrency and digital asset space expand into new markets.

Despite the high-profile move the appointment to BitMEX is conspicuous in its absence from Kwan’s LinkedIn profile which lists her detailed career history back to 1994, leading may to speculate that she has now left the business.

As to the reasons why, it’s anyone’s guess, but with increased attention from US regulators such as the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), it may be that she chose to leave the embattled company to focus on previous ventures.

Recent research has shown that BitMEX has seen huge outflows of bitcoin from its platform in recent months, as investors sense potential trouble with the company and look for alternative trading platforms.

Research from Fork Monitor, found that in July BitMEX processed withdrawals of around 50,000 BTC, or around $500 million based on the asset’s price at the time.

To make matters worse CEO Hayes appears to be making a deliberate attempt to stay out of the picture and away from Twitter.

Mainstream news reports have previously touched on possible heat from the US CFTC.

Earlier this year, Bloomberg featured a story, from unnamed sources, that said the CFTC was investigating BitMEX for an alleged failure to stop US residents using the platform.

The report said: “The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission is investigating crypto exchange BitMEX, according to people familiar with the matter.

“The months-long CFTC probe is focused on whether BitMEX broke rules by allowing Americans to trade on the platform, which isn’t registered with the agency.”

Binance / Binance blocks US customers

Binance has announced it will block all US customers, individual and corporate, from using the exchange, with rumors suggesting this is in direct retaliation to possible regulatory issues arising for the company.

The news broke today that the world’s largest exchange would bar all US citizens from trading on the site from September 12th of this year. Binance.com updated their Terms of Use that the company:

“is unable to provide services to any U.S. person.”

It is not all doom and gloom for US customers though. Many can still bypass the verification process by a VPN and withdrawals of up to 2 BTC ($16,500) is allowed without any verification.

A curious decision

The decision from founder Changpeng Zhao and Binance is curious and strange to say the least. This is because the US accounts or the largest amount of traffic for the website. With around 15% of the traffic coming from the US on average each month.

Perhaps the decision is down to serious violations by the company in the US, with the SEC breathing down Binance’s neck. It would seem that they have decided to jump ship and start a new plan.

Yesterday’s announcement that Binance plans to open a new, fully regulated fiat-to-crypto exchange to serve the U.S. market seems to add weight to this idea. Founder, CZ, also alluded to the idea of a start afresh, tweeting:

“Some short term pains may be necessary for long term gains. And we always work hard to turn every short term pain into a long term gain.”

Not the first time US citizens have been barred

The Binance block is not the first time this has happened. Binance is similar to Bitfinex and BitMEX, who both started blocking U.S. customers in late 2017 due to the challenging regulatory climate.

Two weeks ago the main user of Binance DEX also said it would begin geo-blocking U.S. customers and 28 other countries in July. Bittrex also claimed they would be geo-fencing 32 cryptocurrencies from the U.S. clients last week. Poloniex also took a similar route a couple of weeks ago.

Huobi, another major exchange also made a similar move to the one Binance is planning. They opened a new company alongside BAM Trading Services Inc, a small money services business listed in San Francisco, which was called HBUS. They recently renamed the company Huobi.
