When you talk about price and adoption, then no doubt that bitcoin is by far the best cryptocurrency in the world. But when you talk about functionality, it's a well-known fact that many altcoins are superior in some aspect.
In the TPS department for example, transactions in the bitcoin blockchain can be considered as a man walking while Altcoins are compared to a man sprinting (probably not a good comparison but I hope you get the point). For now its true. Bitcoin is the most famous and useful cryptocureency and many will agree to that. I'm seeing the potential of ethereum this year to compete with it as one of the famous dApp in the cryptocurrency. I know many projects affiliated by ethereum and so far only tron and eos are matching up with them.

I think there is many cryptocurrencies better than bitcoin, faster, smart contract etc. But Bitcoin is still more popular than other crypto currency. Because bitcoin is large market and many investor prefer to invest in bitcoin than other crypto currency.
