Title: Aqua wallet - Bitcoin, Lightning, Liquid
Post by: dkbit98 on January 09, 2024, 12:25:09 PM
Few days ago I installed new mobile wallet for bitcoin called Aqua wallet.

Aqua wallet is non-custodial wallet created by Jan3 company and it is using Liquid and Lightning layer two in addition to regular Bitcoin main net.

After selecting Layer 2 Bitcoin option I can click Receive button and choose between Lightning and Liquid:

I think this could be useful wallet especially in time when fees are high, and I would much rather use this when I need to receive stable coins USDT or EUR in more private way.
One more interesting is that you can accept payments from other chains like ethereum or tron and receive them as USDT.
If we compare fees we can see that transactions are much cheaper than most other alternatives available today, and transactions can be confidential:

Aqua wallet is available in g00gle play store, App store, and as APK file.
Source code will be released as open source in maximum two weeks, and devs are working on desktop wallet as well.
I think there is a space to improve this wallet, maybe with adding Tor switch, dark theme, releasing source code, but it's not a bad start for first version.
Make sure to backup your seed words in safe place after wallet creation!

Important note:
Aqua wallet is using BIP84 derivation path for Bitcoin, and BIP49 for Liquid_BTC.

Few days ago Aqua wallet developers released open source code on their github page.
With new update there are several improvements, bug fixes and new dark theme mod was added.
Aqua wallet can be downloaded on github as apk, on play store, apple store, and F-droid release is coming soon.

On Aqua wallet you can store and swap BTC with Liquid assets L-BTC, L-USDT, EURx, JPYS, INF, etc.

If you import bitcoin wallet to Aqua, can you send/swap the native BTC as L-BTC without doing anything (no manual conversion)? Looking at their homepage, it looks like you need to convert first before you can use their swap feature. Meaning, you still can't escape the high Bitcoin transaction fees.

You should not import seed words to Aqua wallet, generate new one, and note that Aqua is using BIP84 derivation path that can be different for other wallets.
Easier way to get L-BTC is with USDT when fees are high, with sending USDT from Tron or Eth will auto-convert it to L-USDT than you can swap that to L-BTC.
You can also buy L-BTC or L-USDT directly on Bitfinex, BTSE, BTCturk, etc.

This wallet looks extremely interesting, and for the moment the project looks solid! Nice to see they shared the open source code.

I've been looking for a wallet that allows a BTC - L-BTC swap for a while, so thank you OP for this discovery.

I didn't know that EURX existed with Liquid, I'm surprised.

EURX exists for a while on Liquid Network with few more stable currencies other than USDT, but note that EURX is currently not supported for swaps in Aqua wallet, for that you need to use other exchanges.
I heard that Liquid team is preparing some interesting partnership with other projects, so stay tuned and follow upcoming updates.

Yeah I will definitely follow their work, especially waiting for a Desktop version of the wallet, I hope they will make some Appimage or any Linux version!

Do they even have a plan to release a desktop app though? From what I saw on their Telegram, they seem to recommend people to use their Android app more, and there's no indicator that they will build a new app for desktops. There's no mention of it on their FAQs either. I guess they believe the mobile market is more profitable for their business.

Yes they do have plans for desktop version, but it's not their top priority.
However it's easy to transfer L-BTC or L-USDT to Green or Specter desktop wallet, or even better to Jade hardware wallet if you want more safety.
Fees are going to be minimal, especially compared to bitcoin on-chain fees.

Please update your Aqua wallets.
New version v0.1.30 was released few days ago:
https://github.com/AquaWallet/aqua-wallet

Another update is for Liquid network explorer that looks much better now with all the updates and open source live federation audit system.
This is coming from the same guys who made mempool.space and it has very similar design.

They're using cheap fees so it's good they're providing competition against other wallets. I hadn't known their name before your topic but Aqua looks good. I don't know if it'll be used by ppl because it's a new wallet.

People are already using it everyday and you can see lot of activity on all Aqua channels.
There are over 10.000 downloads on official google play store, not counting many more downloads directly from .apk file, and many people are using Aqua wallet on apple devices from app store.

There's a question about the seed-phrase. If I insert it from Bitpay wallet, (if you don't know what this wallet is, look for it in appstore) will my balance of BTC + other cryptocurrencies be displayed in Aqua wallet?

P.S. Don't get me wrong, there's no trust yet. I would like the developers to give a precise answer to the question. After all, not every BTC wallet supports seed-phrase from one wallet to another. Which begs the question. Thank you in advance for the answer!

No it won't show and support all cryptocurrencies from Bitpay wallet.
Please use your eyes and read that Aqua wallet is bitcoin only wallet, and I wrote in first post what derivation paths are supported for bitcoin.

But you do trust closed source bitpay wallet and it's developers  ::)

          -   I read this on the other platform, and you brought it here. I'm just asking, do you think these apps are okay for storing Bitcoin, whether mobile or desktop? With the number of wallets that appear today, it seems that they are difficult to trust immediately.

But I will also do a review of these apps, because based on what I read, the feedback given by others who have tried them seems okay, but like I said, I will research first.

Aqua wallet is one app, and it is only used only for mobile devices, but they are working on desktop app.
Read what I wrote above, this is a hot wallet used for bitcoin and liquid network, you can use it like any other hot wallet for spending, so it should not be used for long term storage like hardware wallets.
