Be cautious when copying wallet addresses
« on: April 06, 2024, 09:47:10 PM »
I never knew this was possible so usually just copy the address and send without confirming much. Well turns out that was a big mistake on my part. Never knew that clipboard can do such. I don't know if it's a malware, I ended up using an address that wasn't mine and funny holds some units of Bitcoin.

Still confused how something like this could happen,  but try to be cautious and don't feel too lazy to cross check your address before sending or posting. Recall Bitcoin transactions are irreversible after 6 confirmations, once confirmed it's gone. You can tell the wallet address it went to but not the owner. Except they are careless,  which I doubt they are.

If you doesn't know what could go wrong if it's not on your browser's extension then consider your device is infected. I recommend to reformat your device to avoid such incident to happen again.

I have experienced this, wrongly sending tokens to a coin's smart contract instead of my personal wallet address.
This happened because I did it in a hurry, so.. it is very important that we double-check the wallet address to which we will send assets before we press the send button.

Unfortunately, the assets you send to the smart contract will be lost and cannot be sent back. That is why when carrying out cryptocurrency transactions you have to pay attention to the address which must be appropriate and correct, sometimes the size of a letter or one different letter will make our assets trapped forever.

If you download a lot of applications, you end up with clippers (also known as clipboard hijackers), which have access to the data that you copy and then modify it for what the hackers want.
Mostly, any Bitcoin address is changed to the hackers' address, so you must verify the address several times.

there is a related thread created back years in other forum about this in which many prominent account are giving warning not to copy and paste your wallet address without completely checking your copied address.
that is the big mistake of an account involved and I believe it is malware that directed your sent funds into another wallet without you knowing it.

Except they are careless,  which I doubt they are.

           -   Maybe when that's the problem, @PX-Z is right that reformatting is the best solution you should do. Also, when it comes to such transaction situations,
we should always double check to make sure that the destination of the bitcoin or cryptocurrency we are sending is correct.

As long as we always be cautious in what we do in any transaction that we use the platform, it's that simple to understand.

It doesn't take much time to copy a smart contract but when a user shows a wrong address despite having copied it correctly it means that the device is infected with malware. Format the drive as soon as possible and remove the malware otherwise those errors will keep repeating and a user will lose his resources. When copying a smart contract, the utmost care must be taken. Where checking the address even if it takes a few minutes more, it should be done with time. Those who have been victims of such acts know how important it is to exercise caution.

If you download pirated software/cracks, it is very likely that clipboard malware was hidden in one of them, and that is a much smaller accident than being infected with a RAT (remote access trojan), with which a hacker can actually completely control your computer. If you want to have a "clean" computer, you will have to change your habits, or get a new computer only for serious things.

1 or 6 confirmations are the same for an ordinary mortal, and the only chance to turn the situation in your favor is to manage to react quickly enough and send BTC back to your address with the help of RBF.

There are fake apps on application stores. Both Google Playstore and Apple store. There are many apps that those stores will not know that contain what can be used to steal your coins. That is why it is better you get a device you do not use to download too much apps than to be using it for just wallets. Also a device which will not be used to download executable files and other things but just for wallet only is better for online wallets.

1 or 6 confirmations are the same for an ordinary mortal, and the only chance to turn the situation in your favor is to manage to react quickly enough and send BTC back to your address with the help of RBF.
But the transaction may not be the one that has RBF. It can also be too late, only one confirmation is enough for double spending not to work and the coin sent to a wrong address without no recovery of any kind possible.

Absolutely right. This is why I never install any extensions on my computer other than the browser wallets I need. In the worst case scenario, these extensions can start mining, but in the worst case, what is described in the main post will happen. It’s also strange that the antivirus didn’t work, it should have It is necessary to squeak. From this I conclude that he either did not stand or was generally weak.

I'm really sorry to hear that you experienced that. That's really a bad experience and I hope you don't get swayed away with cryptocurrency and learn from your mistakes. You must make amends to that in a way that you wouldn't repeat it.

It's a good practice to check the final transaction and see the address. Sometimes you have to verify as well on your exchange (if that's where you will be transferring) if they made amends to their receiving addresses.

This is one big reason why I usually triple check the wallet address whom I am sending my coins to so that nothing shenanigan can transpire as we know it would be almost impossible to reverse the transaction so if something can change the address then what you send is already lost forever. I never thought the same thing can still be happening these days but we know that this can be one of the many risks we have to deal while in crypto world...we should be careful all the time.
Caution is never redundant in this market, fortunately I have never encountered a similar situation. I use Ubuntu on my laptop to manage crypto-related information and it seems to be much safer than Windows, and I also don't install any unnecessary software on that laptop. Viruses are everywhere and can change the address to the address of hackers to steal users' crypto assets.

Even the US government has to transfer 0.001 BTC or 1 BTC before moving thousands of BTC, that is a good habit that we need to learn and follow when we want to move our crypto assets, whether it is large or small. Everyone should also double-check the transaction information before confirming, in addition to the mismatch of the receiving address, gas fees are also one of the mistakes that many users make.

Re: Be cautious when copying wallet addresses
« Reply #14 on: April 07, 2024, 08:49:55 PM »
Cross checking wallet address to make sure it matches the exact wallet we want to send funds to after copying and pasting it, is just as important as securing our wallet to make sure it doesn't get hacked, alot of cases I've seen where people sent their funds the wrong address and just like that, the money is gone.

One that happens recently involved a huge amount of $90,000 which the user mistakenly sent to usdt contract address on Tron blockchain, instead of sending to his kucoin address, that is, the nigga is a well known bitcoiner here in my country, he was to buy a coin listed on kucoin exchange, he decide to move $90,000 from his Binance account to kucoin exchange, he opened his kucoin account, went to the usdt deposit page, selected TRX network and copied his address, he did not know what happened, there was some kind of mix which he did not notice, he went to his Binance account and pasted the wallet address, unknown to him that it was the contract address of TRON USDT that he pasted, he did all the confirmation and the fund were sent, transaction confirmed on blockchain but his kucoin wallet was empty, upon checking to see what happened, he discovered he sent the $90,000 to USDT contract address on Tron, instead of his kucoin usdt wallet address.

This are the transaction hash for whoever wants to confirm - https://tronscan.org/#/transaction/c6c87f47cd686d940a8c1f5f6a9b54300be4799234851790d191fb9327c8d354
