Title: Government employee accused of mining crypto at public’s expense
Post by: RSRS on September 10, 2021, 04:05:58 PM
An information technology operations supervisor at the Suffolk County clerk’s office in New York, Christopher Naples allegedly harnessed his position to place crypto mining equipment in various spots at the Riverhead Center in the New York county in which he worked.

Naples allegedly set up 46 devices for crypto mining, “in locations like an unused electrical wall panel or underneath floorboards,” according to a statement posted on AP News on Wednesday.

Crypto mining can be an expensive endeavor, sometimes requiring specific equipment for the task, as well as hiking up electrical costs wherever the mining apparatuses are set up. Mining equipment can also give off notable amounts of heat, adding to the equation.

If this really happens it is really silly. We know that mining will need very high electric power that is why some countries illegalize this activity.
And if they do mining activities by utilizing this public's expense really outrageous. Because they are the same as stealing the rights for other communities and of course this is detrimental to the state because this activity is considered to provide more burdens to the state.
But it is different if this is indeed approved by the country and the results returned to the state

46 devices whoa! that's a huge equivalent of electricity bill for sure. If ever it is true that's what you called stealing electricity
using other electricity owner. Probably, you can do mining as long as you use your own electricity so that no one can able to accuse you of course.

Have read something similar like this two years ago and this is from China, the man was both fined and imprisoned, 15 years for Christopher Naples is just right he should be fined for stealing.
Imagine he is stealing from the government where he is getting his salary, this is to set an example for those who will be tempted to try government resources.

I am surprised at such people who found money for 46 devices, which now cost a lot of money, but they cannot find a room and rent it by paying for it with the help of mining...but now it can go sideways, the court and so on.

For such officials, the problem is not finding a place to mine cryptocurrency. In these cases, they use office space to connect to the power source and not pay to use it. This kind of abuse, I think, occurs in many countries. In any case, in the news of my country, I have already heard of several such abuses by officials.
