Ethereum is one of the leading competitors of Bitcoin when we talk about market capitalization even though it was invented much later. Ethereum transactions are processed faster than BTC but it comes with higher gas fees. I think BTC has a better chance of becoming a legal tender in the future. But Ethereum surely has an edge in case of smart contracts.

Of course, a lot will depend on the project, how much it is developed and develops its technology. You can also note the price per transaction and how fast it goes.
