CAN I EARN JUST BY HOLDING MY ETHEREUM

I’ve been holding onto my Ethereum and Bitcoin cash for a while now, and honestly, I’ve been unsure about what to do with it. I know ETH is a valuable asset, but simply holding it doesn't seem like the best way to maximize its potential. Price has been flying up and down recently, but i'm bullish on it with the upcoming ETF approval, that is if it was approved it will be a plus for most retail holders like myself. Do you have any idea how i can make the most out of my holdings.

You can choose to buy altcoins under the Ethereum blockchain like Pepe and the past few days has mirrored this rise.
There are others like Shiba that's under and I believe would benefit from any news that screams positive for ETH since their market cap and price  is relatively lower and thus more volatile than ETH itself.
If you going long term though you can hold BTC and add some ETH to it.

If Ethereum ETF finally get approval, we will see rallies on altcoins and ethereum together with Bitcoin has high chance of breaking the all time high. So my advice is that you should keep your ethereum tight, there is high tendency of Ethereum reaching 10k price, staking your Bitcoin might comes with lock condition that might stop you from selling.

Even with decentralized staking finance like compound finance reward are low, I don't know what you want to do with 3.5 p.a interest on your ethereum you have hold for long time.

Today I was seen that news that the Ethereum ETF approval discussion is ongoing with the US SEC and people are predicting that the price will reach $6k to $10k and if it reach that amount then those who have been investing and hodling for since last year will smile and make it from the investment. So I still encourage the Op to continue holding because good news is coming on the way so keep on holding the Ethereum and if possible you can increase the portfolio so that when it finally approve then you make good profit.

Well, the Ethereum ETF has been approved just hours ago, but there's no significant price increase towards the price of Ethereum as of this moment.
Now to your question, there are some ways for you to earn using your Ethereum.

1. Capital Appreciation - this is what you're doing right now. Buy and hold, and yes it takes time to make profits, but that's how the strategy works.
2. Staking - Stake it with a validator out there. Based on stakingrewards.com, you can earn 3.69% annually by staking it. Better than just storing it.
3. Trade - You can use your Ethereum to trade as well. I don't recommend this to newbies though.
4. Use your ETH to buy coins - this is self-explanatory. No need to explain to you.

Overall, there are many ways for you to earn using your Ethereum. It will all depends on how knowledgeable you are, the risk, and the amount of time you are willing to give.

When bullrun conditions like this seem very suitable for long-term and short-term trading. Staking will be more suitable if there is a bearish season where price movement conditions in the market are not good, so staking is the best choice to get income from cryptocurrency even though prices in the market are collapsing.
