Steem (STEEM) is a decentralized cryptocurrency that runs on the Steem blockchain, which powers the Steemit social media and blogging platform. The digital currency STEEM is not mineable like bitcoin or ether. Instead, the Steem blockchain allocates the majority of newly produces STEEM tokens into a reward fund, which is used to pay Steemit users for contributing to the platform. Additionally, Steem – like most cryptocurrencies – can also be used to make digital peer-to-peer payments.

Steem is a cryptocurrency for a social blogging platform. The Steem blockchain hosts blog posts and comments posted by users, and users curate content through upvoting and downvoting posts. Upvotes are not only used to curate content, they also generate income for the author and the upvoter.. The author earns Steem and Steem Backed Dollars (SBD) when they receive upvotes, and the upvoter earns a portion of that income.

Steem coin is a fundamental cryptocurrency of the Steemit network, and the other two cryptocurrencies (Steem Dollars and Steem Power) are dependent on it. Since Steem was released in 2016, the supply of Steem has automatically increased by 100% each year. This is what it’ll continue to do indefinitely.
In this aspect, Steem is different from other cryptocurrencies, as it doesn’t rely solely on mining to create new coins.

Created by Ned Scott and Dan Larimer, STEEM is a cryptocurrency that is used to power Steemit, an incentivized blockchain based social media platform. Steemit is very similar to Reddit, in that it allows users to make posts, write comments, and also upvote posts and comments made by other users. The difference however, is that users can be rewarded monetarily for these actions. Blockchain technology enable users on the Steemit platform to receive the cryptocurrency in exchange for participating on the platform, which can then be exchanged for other cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, and then eventually fiat currency.

Steem is the name of the token that can be bought and sold on the open market, based on the blockchain-based platform Steemit. Steemit is a platform that allows publishers to monetize their content that functions similarly to many other social content networks. Think Reddit, but in a way that pays writers and content curators. Steemit rewards writers when their content gets upvoted, and it also rewards people who help curate the best content by upvoting other people’s content. Steem, one of the three currencies the Steem platform offers, is an integral part of this system.

Steem represents a fusion of ideas, drawing from both social media and cryptocurrencies to create a new kind of platform. Anybody can create, share or upvote content on the Steem network, earning cryptocurrency tokens based on performance within the community.

Steem is the fundamental unit of account on the Steem blockchain. All other units (Steem dollars and Steem power) derive their value from the value of Steem. There is no need to hold on to Steem in its cryptocurrency form, it should be used either to buy Steem power, Steem dollars or be converted to Bitcoins. Steem increases in supply 100% each year. Steem was first published as a whitepaper in March 2016. The currency and platform were in Beta until July 4th 2016.

Steem’s main platform, called Steemit, is a social media network built on top of the Steem blockchain. Steemit is similar to popular content-driven social networks like Reddit and Medium, but it rewards users with cryptocurrency for their participation. Fundamentally, the more value a particular piece of content provides to a greater number of people, the more the individuals responsible for creating and curating that content can earn.
