Cryptojacking A Growing Problem
« on: February 04, 2023, 10:47:54 AM »
As a type of cybercrime, cryptojacking uses victim devices to mine cryptocurrencies. Infecting different devices and using them as mining rigs, cryptojacking malware consumes the majority of system resources and affects the overall performance of the devices by secretly using the victims’ computing power.

Cryptojacking is an emerging online threat, which allows criminals to mine tokens, generate fees, update cryptocurrency blockchains, steal data, and create new tokens. This process is enabled with any device that has access to the web or internet connection including desktops, laptops, tablets, and even smartphones; all done without the knowledge of victims. Through this malicious activity cryptojackers are able to use computing power to make money off of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum and Monero by performing calculations for digital transactions.

Methods for detecting cryptojacking

There are abnormalities with devices, the usual level of processing drops, applications run slowly, and the network is slow.

Particularly on mobile devices, overheating is caused by CPU power usage.

Resource overuse on the network.

Criminals may use “hijacked” equipment to access and steal crypto assets from digital wallets or hacked sites, as well as mining for cryptocurrencies. They may install malware onto websites, send emails with malicious links, contaminate corporate servers and even personal home routers. Dishonest employees of specific industries have been found to use cryptojacking to be able to siphon processing power from corporate networks and take their share of the cryptocurrencies, as recent reports suggest that numerous companies have lost out on their wealth due to such deeds.

Prevention

Spread the word about cryptojacking’s dangers to users (What do I do

with you now?)

Keep an eye out for malicious websites and links.

Hackers use multiple types of malware to take control of user’s computers, including malicious codes inserted via compromised websites, infected computers, malicious links and online ads. This type of cybercrime — cryptojacking — allows them to generate cryptocurrency free of charge, as well as gathering other data and identity information illegally. As the malware uses a large portion of the device’s resources to run, victims may notice a decrease in their computer’s speed and performance. Cryptojacking is classified as a cybercrime due to its unauthorized use of people’s devices with the intent to extract both cryptocurrencies and sensitive personal data.

Cyber security experts have uncovered a widespread issue with the spread of malware. To reduce the risk of major damage, it is recommended that customers regularly scan their systems for any suspicious activity. An effective measure to protect against these infections is to connect to the network only when necessary and carry out most other device work when offline — this will guard against unauthorised use, as well as potential losses suffered if holding digital currencies. Remember, these risks can quickly lead to total crypto asset loss so staying tuned is essential.
