Don't Borrow Money To Gambling.
« on: January 04, 2024, 09:55:00 PM »
A Gambling addicted friend of mine borrowed $80 from Point of Sale (POS) girl and used it to gamble thinking that he would win and pay back the money with interest but ironically the money lost for the gambling and when it is time to pay back the money, there was no money to pay back again and he ran to me to give him loan and he game me his mobile phone ( Tecno Spark 10) as collateral, and took the phone and gave the money. And early in the morning, the following day, he come again that he wants to sell his solar system so he can used the money to settle some debt. And I bought it from him as a cheaper price. And I was not comfortable with it so I called him to come in the evening and asked why he sold the solar and he told me that he sold it to pay some gambling debt. And I gave him some advice. And we depart.
What do you think this guy should do to stop this habit because I have tried my best to stop him but no way. You input is needed.

@Agbe, I have seen a worse case than the one you are talking about, and it's only foolishness for a gambler to borrow money for the purpose of gambling. There have been situations where some gamblers bet with money that doesn't belong to them, and they end up losing the money and getting punished the way they deserve. Gambling addiction is a very common habit that every gambler must not allow themselves to sink into because they will do things that they might end up regretting. For example, some people have sold most of their important properties because of gambling addiction, while others have committed suicide after losing money that doesn't belong to them.

A neighbor of mine had to sell his only residence after taking part in gambling. Although he was addicted to gambling as well as drugs. His family always had quarrels and fights, sometimes torturing his wife to manage gambling money. Although his wife had managed the gambling money several times, the gambler repeatedly pressured him to manage the gambling money. The only reason for this was that he became bankrupt by taking excessive loans due to his involvement in gambling. That's why the gambler repeatedly tortures his wife. When will the curse of gambling be eliminated from society?

When will the curse of gambling be eliminated from society?

the curse of gambling can't be eliminated, Since time immemorial, gambling has been a part of human life.  With various types of gambling.  From what is still traditional to online gambling today.  This will continue from era to era.  I rarely hear of a successful gambler.  Even if someone had to go into debt to gamble, that would be ridiculous.

Absolutely true. Such gambling was also practiced in the oldest civilizations of the world. Even in the modern civilization, the practice of gambling has become more intense. Gambling will never be eradicated from human civilization no matter how much reform our modern civilization does against gambling. Because it has spread among humans since the earliest civilizations in such a way that just as human nerves carry sensations from the whole body to the brain, gambling has become adjusted to human nerve systems. Once one is attracted to gambling then it is never possible to control that gambling attraction.

I think you should seek professional help to help diagnose how bad your friend's gambling addiction is, if any. Check with his family and see how he manages his money, and try to find alternatives to limit his access to money for a while to make sure he doesn't fall further into debt, while at the same time looking for a decent job that can take most of his time from gambling. If worst comes to worst, take away his phone/PC access to make sure he doesn't do online gambling. At the end of the day, his will to quit gambling is probably what matters most. A professional should be able to at least offer suggestions to make a better environment, while at the same time encouraging him to stop taking loans to gamble money. You should also stop being a safety net for him so he won't come to you whenever he gets in trouble.

He's too addicted to understanding good reasons no amount of persuasion will do just assure him that you will be with him when he wants to reach out and wants a way out, but don't lend him money anymore it's like supporting his vice Just say no, he will in the end finally realize that he is hurting himself and his family and his finances just look for a sign that he wants to change and be there to help him by leading him to the right people that will help him cure his addiction.

What do you think this guy should do to stop this habit
He's addicted to gambling and unfortunately others can't do a lot to relieve someone from such addiction. The only way to stop his addiction is that he should do something else to earn some money, and should learn to self-control himself. But, I don't think that's possible in his case because he's highly addicted already and it's not possible for an addict to leave gambling by himself.

I would suggest you to tell him about the worst consequences that could happen to him and how much damage his addiction can cause to him and to his family. Try to motivate him as a mentor and teach him that gambling in excess is the cause of huge problems. If he gets motivated by listening to you then he may develop self-control, but the changes for that to happen are very low.

What he needs is to realize what he is currently doing. The people around him are the only ones who can see the negative impact he is having right now. All he can think of is finding a source of money to continue his gambling habits. Try to wake him up by making him realize that what he is doing is already out of control.

Aside from that, maybe he needs someone to talk to him regularly. Your friend is suffering from gambling addiction and probably has a mental health issue that's why he continues to pursue his gambling activities even though he is losing so much on it.

Poor the wife who is hurt by the addicted gambler. That's why it's difficult when addiction is neglected to become a gambling addict. Almost everything will be destroyed by family relationships, friends, and others, and it can even lead to a crime if it is not really controlled.

Especially if the debt is accumulated only because of the addiction that the gambler has to the casino, then the situation is really a mess, and the destruction of the family is a high chance that will be the result in the end.

Yes he is 100% addicted to it and he is working with a construction company which they are paying him $40 monthly though he is minor worker in the company and the money he is using to gamble a week is much more than the money he is receiving as a monthly salary. And upon doing something else in the construction company, he is still busy gambling whenever he is back from work and once he is back from the next thing to do is to visit the casino hall. Though I am trying my best to speak with him and give him some advise to quit gambling. Gambling is really eating deep the life of the boy.

That's a very serious level of gambling addiction and if it's not stopped now then he may harm himself and others around him. Such type of addicts often lose in gambling and the basically start selling the material things that they have and if they still lose then in final stage they can turn into criminals in order to fulfill their gambling desires.

Though I am trying my best to speak with him and give him some advise to quit gambling. Gambling is really eating deep the life of the boy.
You should definitely speak to him and tell him that he's destroying his life because of the addiction. Also tell him that gambling is not for everyone, and no one can become rich by gambling. Try to speak to him in a peaceful manner and show empathy towards him, also tell him that if he continues gambling then he may not only lose money but a lot of things in his life.

I hope that will at least somehow help him to think that he's going in the wrong direction and maybe he tries to change himself after listening to you.

One thing about the guy who borrows to gamble is that he cannot borrow to invest in bitcoin. He will see it like bitcoin investment will waste time and may never be profitable. People of this generation just like quick money with 24hrs and that is why they fall easy to scammers and Ponzi schemeers.
Someone who is addicted should be reported to the authorities for rehabilitation, that's the best you can do for him.

A very close friend of mine has similar issues and sell everything in in his apartment and use the money 💰  to gamble,at times he wins 🏆 and each time he gamble and wins that trigger him to triple  the money in gambling to the extent that he doesn't apart from gamble, a time came when he gamble and he lost  twice  there wasn't money on himself again to gamble then he started to beg anyone he knows that have money  they assist him without knowing his intentions towards the money they give to him he continues like that and they got tired of him then he rented his apartment out and run 🏃‍♂️ to stay with his parents at the  village,  all this while I try calling him and advice him  to a point I got a job for him to do to keep him busy  but after working for two months and stop going
Once gambling has gotten into you and you are addicted to it it hard before you can stop one from gambling

Your friend seems not to understand the ethics and principles of gambling. From what you have said, I could understand that he is the type that already have the fixed mindset of becoming reach through gamble but he has forgotten too fast that gambling is a game of two faces, either you win or you lose and the possibility of you winning is minuit compared to the loss aspect of it.

What I would advise is that you tell your friend to always have a budget for gambling because I see he has no self restraint and as such would put all his funds into gambling which is not advisable to do. Already from what he did one can tell that he is an addict with no gambling budget  and as
such, gambles with whatever funds that comes his way.

He should have a clear thought of gambling as not a get rich quick scheme but rather a game for fun and should gamble responsibly. Let him know that.
