Vitalik and Gavin Wood recently did a Digix fireside chat on Ethereum 2.0 and Polkadot.
As someone who contributes to both ecosystems, I found the following discourse to be clear and concise, in terms of how to navigate true intention vs speculation in existing communities.
We should get a third party, i.e. Digix to promote this content more. The talk had a small audience, adn they didn’t do much followup ensuring this material gets more widely shared.
Here’s a very rough transcript of the original discourse:
Is there a common ground between Polkadot and Ethereum? What do the projects represent in the ecosystem?
Gavin: Projects with tokens will inevitably attract attention & speculation around competition.
You are resource constrained. You want to put resources into the project that generates the most profit. But the competition [between the two platforms] is entirely only in this regard. An analogy for this train of thought is that you can either choose to buy Microsoft stock or IBMV stock.
In reality, there’s very little direct competition in terms of the product.
Polkadot is interested in being a meta protocol, with a lower level abstraction than Ethereum, i.e. smart contract level.
Polkadot pushes out different goals. Those goal are around chain upgradability, governance, interactivity. Polkadot wants to facilitate interactions that are much more about say, off-chain on-chain cooperation than interactions in a smart contract.
Vitalik: I generally agree with a lot of that. Polkadot tests out very different technical and economic hypotheses. There are big differences in terms of relationships between protocol and applications and what expectations applications have at the protocol level.

I don't think I need to say anything new about these two coins. Because all of us who are connected to cryptocurrencies must have an idea about these two coins.Ethereum, however, is currently the most popular of the two coins.However, many are hoping that the future will be as popular as the Polka dot token Ethereum.

Polkadot is now in great demand by cryptocurrency lovers because Polkadot has a very cheap transaction fee.
Etheruem has the disadvantage of transacting which is expensive to charge and even a one-time transaction fee can have 1 Polkadot.
But most of the community still believes in Ethereum because Ethereum does have a level of friendliness for all cryptocurrency investors and traders .

Polkadot has just flown, Ethereum is already in the sky.
Polkadot is just running, Ethereum is already running fast.
Polkadot has just thousands of communities, Ethereum has millions of communities.
Everything is going well and Polkadot will definitely need a little time to continue to compete with Ethereum because Ethereum is already one step ahead.

Etherium is a very popular coin in the crypto currency market. Its position in the crypto market after bitcoin but its transection fees is high. On the other hand polkadot is getting popularity day by day because its transection fees is very cheap. It is growing day by day but etherium is far far ahead than polkadot at this moment.

I don't think there's anything new about polka dots and etherium. Because everyone involved with cryptocurrency has a fairly good idea about this life. Because of the location of these two coins across much of the cryptocurrency. However, one is etherium and the other is polka dot. Ethereum is now a much more valuable token than a polka dot token. However, many are analyzing that Polka dot will soon become as popular as Ethereum.

I think polkadot is slightly different asset than eth and thus is not so easy to compare those two but when comparing certainly dot is much younger than eth and has much fewer projects that launched on this platform

Ethereum and Polkadot both are good coin in cryptocurrency market. Both are most popular coin in crypto world. Day by day their popularity are growing up at a high rate. Now both are very potential and strong coin. Theh are very good for investment now. If you have enough money to invest on them, you can try it. I think its very funny that people are comparing ETH with DOT as ETH is too much ahead than others. There are two different coin with different blockchain and Dot only started its journey where ETH made its path many days ago. Though DOT's system is good but i think it has to long run to come across to ETH.

Indeed both are very important for the crypto space and the more they develop - the better. There shouldn't be competition between crypto currencies, but cooperation.

Ethereum and Polkadot both are good coin in crypto market. But I think Ethereum is so much popular than Polkadot. Ethereum is the boss of altcoin season and it is stand in number two position in coinmarketcap list. So Ethereum is better than Polkadot.

Polkadot has recently been developing very quickly and steadily, and only in the future it is possible that Polkadot will become a direct competitor to Ethereum, but at the moment, of course, Ethereum surpasses Polkadot in everything, and when Ethereum 2.0 will be released, Ethereum will generally be out of reach for Polkadot, so in the near future Polkadot will not have chances.

Actually i think that there is a vast difference between the two. You have to think logically, because if you compare DOT with Ethereum it is the same as comparing father and son(just for example), because in reality DOT is a earlier token that is developing, while Ethereum is a token that has been successfully developed and has also been widely used by projects in the past. But I agree that Dot is one another promising coin that will acquire good reputation in the future. The current situation of the this coin is really impressive.

And I am sure that for Polkadot Ethereum we will reach and reach in the near future. I am confident in Polkadot and I know that when you reach the number of followers that the project of Vitalik Butorin has, the project Polkadot it will surpass them in popularity. A matter of time.

Polkadot is a new project, its okay. But if You look at the public demand than you can see polkadot doing much better. Till now polkadot is not able to compare with eth but its a good competitive.

Ethereum is too super power for Polkadot because it was just born and Ethereum has been in the cryptocurrency community network for a long time, I also believe that Polkadot will take a long time to compete with Ethereum.
Ethereum has its own characteristics, namely the erc20 token which has dominated in every cryptocurrency market and of course will also create a new marketcap for Ethereum.

I think , not fair to compare Ethereum to polkadot. That's too far .
Ethereum is the biggest of altcoins and always be the King of smart contract platform.
Ethereum has biggest community, number second behind bitcoin.
Polkadot will take several years to compete with Ethereum.

Polkadot is a project like a flower which is going to be flown where Ethereum is already flown with its beauty. Still there is no competitor of Ethereum but BNB is going to be compete soon and Polkadot will follow BNB as soon as they will be ready. It's estimated time may be from Q3 of 2021. Polkadot can be one of the top 3 leading altcoin (ETH, BNB and DOT) in the upcoming years.

Polka Dot and Etherium are definitely two good coins in the cryptocurrency market.I would like to say about these two coins that Ethereum coins are the best between Ethereum and Polka dot.Ethereum is the most popular altcoin in the market after Bitcoin.However, polka dot coins are also popular but not like Etherium.The demand of all people but more towards Etherium than from Polka Dot.

I think Ethereum is better than Polkadot. Ethereum's price and popularity both are so much higher than Polkadot. Now Ethereum is in number two rank on coinmarketcap list. But I think both are good coin for investment now.

Maybe OP has different opinions.
But I think we should compare two coins that have same Blockchain.

Polkadot is a new platform, but yes it has some stronger fundamentals and also greater technology. The fee is also lower, offers faster transactions. But, Ethereum is still better.
And Ethereum platform still becomes the most used platform although it has a very high gas fee. That's very silly

There are many differences between Polkadot and Etherium. At the present time we see polkadot very good quality coins. The right time to invest in polkadot can be seen at any time will hit $500 and what is likely to be $1000 by 2021. Etherium may not be able to overtake the price but the price of polkadot will increase a lot in the future.

Polka Dot and Etherium are two but extremely popular coins.However, Ethereum's popularity is comparatively higher than that of Polka dot coins.The market value and demand for etherium coins is also much higher. The current price of Etherium Coin is 3474$. On the other hand, the price of Palka dot coin is 41.50$. This makes it clear which of these two coins is considered the best.

I like both Ethereum & Polkdadot, but right now Polkadot is getting more attention than Ethereum because it is expected to be the layer-0 blockchain for the entire blockchain ecosystem. I also sold all my ETH to buy other tokens, including DOT. Polkadot will launch in November, expect DOT to reach 100-200 USD.

I think the winner will be the one with cheaper transactions, since no one wants to overpay. Even though DOT is still relatively young compared to ETH, it has every chance of replacing ETH. I do not pretend to be the ultimate truth, we will see everything over time.

I like both Ethereum & Polkdadot, but right now Polkadot is getting more attention than Ethereum because it is expected to be the layer-0 blockchain for the entire blockchain ecosystem. If Ethereum team improve their project and Ethereum 2.0 launched completely, I think Ethereum will always be the trend centre of smart contract platform. Because there are several potential smart contract platform, such as solana, polkadot, BSC, EOS etc.

Vitalik Buterin and Gavin Wood certainly understand very well the collaboration between these two coins between Ethereum and Polkadot so as to create something called a very strong collaboration that creates super strong value, hopefully in the future this collaboration will continue because of Vitalik Buterin and Gavin Wood is a well-known person in the cryptocurrency circle.
If we think that Ethereum has problems with its expensive transaction gas fees, then Polkadot can reduce the transaction gas costs with the system owned by the Polkadot coin, namely Parachain and this is the latest innovation system from the Polkadot coin.

These two coins do not need to be compared because I see Ethereum and Polkadot really being very good coins with a lot of diversity in the ecosystem so it is very good for Polkadot and Ethereum to be owned and held for the long term.
We can make something very valuable from Polkadot and Ethereum apart from the #DevelopmentTeam that is super super has intelligence advantages that can make it easier to develop the two coins between Polkadot and Ethereum.

Crypto has two potential projects each projects has own advantages but now ethereum is popular than polkadot i like both coins I'm holding both coins for long term investments this is the right time to buy if the price of ethereum and Dot go down again i will buy more again.

Popularity is the key here because while Polkadot has a potential but yet their partnership did not ring a bell at all(at least not in that couple of years effect) or are they cooking better in the coming days or at least in soon Bull market?
well I am looking for much better use aside from Ethereum specially when there is congestion that the Fee of ETH sometimes comes higher than what we experienced in Bitoin or higher.
