$12k drained from my Metamask + Trust Wallet accounts!

Hello everyone!

I wanna remember this day as one of the worst days of my life. Earlier, my Metamask and Trust Wallet accounts got hacked. It all started when this skilled hacker acted like a normal dev team and speaking professionally like he knows about the damn project. I failed to double check his Telegram on his Twitter account (which was really different and I didn't do that). If I did, I could saved all of my assets.

Then he sent me the zip file containing all of the "documents" and "graphics" needed to collaborate by doing a video review. As I unzipped, he instructed that I should be opening that PDF file (without knowing that it's a malware). And I fell for it by clicking the PDF. At first it was nothing and then I tried it again. I thought it was just a bug. Then afterward when I wake up, I saw my wallets being drained by the hacker but surprisingly not all of them are being taken out (and I am just lucky to withdraw some of my remaining assets to my new wallet and the Ledger Nano S). But still, $12K is a very big loss for me as a guy from a 3rd world country. Despite that I stored my seed phrases offline, they can still find a backdoor even without the need of using the phrases.

How I wish I would turn back the time and saved all of the assets that I have in my portfolio. The lesson that I have learned is that if I choose to hold these cryptos for a long time, I should have stored them in the Ledger Nano S rather than in Metamask and Trust Wallet. Plus, I may have to start using my Macbook Air once again just to access my wallets and not Windows or Android. 

I know that this is going to be a difficult time for me to move on, but I have no other way but to move forward and learn from this.

I don't know what the right words should I say just to help you feel better or lessen your heavy burden.

As you said mate "move on" the word that takes time to heal the wound. I had the same experience before but it was smaller amount than yours. Few and not promising assets. Back then I was devastated and frustrated. But I said everything will turn to be good for me and bad for the stealer.

I'm still on the process.

You should be careful when clicking a link or an unverified website. Scammers are not idols they are constantly developing their own methods to scam people and phishing is a very common method used by them. I got too many messages with a suspicious link on them which I mostly ignore in telegram. Also, keep your privet key secure.

It's not an unverified website. It's a malware that I have downloaded that was included in the ZIP file. So I think next time, when a stranger is providing a PDF or ZIP file, always double check it's extension whether if it's really .PDF or .ZIP. Because I realized too late that when I clicked the fake ZIP file malware, it's extension was .SCREENSAVER.

Recently, another one of the KOLs in my team was also a victim with the same scheme. So this is a new modus where a certain fake dev acts professionally rather than being another "scammer" or "spammer". I'm transferring my assets now to Ledger.

There are too many ponzi coins and project which are always in thinking of scam and hacked your wallet you should check carefully the coins and don't be greedy . adding whom coins which are free giveaways is the reason of lost your assets .

It is always good for us to have certain rules when we interact online with some websites or with people that we know very little about.

 • Don't trust someone you barely know and don't accept any files they send us.
 • Do not download files from sites that are not 100% safe and known.
 • Don't click on links that we don't know where they will take us.
 • Always use an antivirus if we are using Windows.

Following a few steps as simple as these we will be safer, but not 100%.
