This is largely due to the fact that most exchange sites keep much of the price pairing with Bitcoin, hence, a fall in Bitcoin affecting the coins paired with it. Bitcoin will continue to control the market until perhaps most coins are paired with USD directly.

Op have stated the obvious, I was about the say that it will be very difficult for altcoins to ever take over and control the entire crypto market due some reasons which the op have also made mention of the most important one, I will be a good idea for new projects to start paring their coin or token to usd alone, this will not only protect their coin or token price from bitcoins fluctuations, but wil also help the price of their coin or token grow naturally as the project progresses.
